naijaboiler··on The death of partying in the USA
cultural norms in the US have shifted so much that this becomes impractical. The parents of the friend you just went to are not expecting that behavior.
naijaboiler··on Heart attacks aren't as fatal as they used to be
That's the calculations that go into screening guidelines. It's a lot of weighing now much benefit early detection provides vs how much harm testing and false positives do.
naijaboiler··on America’s incarceration rate is in decline
Um you are more gracious than me. I will just flat out call out as his friend as lying
naijaboiler··on The Illusion of Thinking: Understanding the Limitations of Reasoning LLMs [pdf]
Yup. It’s time for us to just accept that LLMs are “similar in meaning” machines not “thinking/ understanding” machines
naijaboiler··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
Why sent tech companies and tech workers kick up a fuss when this bill passed in 2017. I remember being mad about it
naijaboiler··on The time bomb in the tax code that's fueling mass tech layoffs
Why should they? Why did we allow a president to put in tax raise for the future. Replicants were playing politics from the start. Pass a bad bill, and then hope to get about it when the bad parts kick in when the other side woo be in power
naijaboiler··on Former DOGE engineer on his experience working for the cost-cutting unit
Duh. Anybody serious could have told him that.
naijaboiler··on Connecticut legislature overhauls towing laws to reduce 'predatory towing'
Many American states have laws that allow tow companies to rob people.

Tow companies literally just go into parking lot of apartment complexes they have a contract with and start removing cars with expired or non visible parking stickers. Nobody called them, the car is not a problem. They then only take cash, are not available on weekends, charge you some crazy rate like 150/day, won’t even let you into the car to get your personal items, then after 15 days, they sell your car. It’s functionally just stealing from the poor

They particularly like doing it on days with bad weather too. And they are so rude and aggressive and antagonistic. I’m convinced any time a tow company is short on cash, they just send their people out there to hunt for cars to tow

And since it’s mostly poor minorities that bear the brunt of these abuses, many people are okay with it

naijaboiler··on "AI Will Replace All the Jobs " Is Just Tech Execs Doing Marketing
Humans beings can not run out of economically valuable things we can do for one another. Technology can change what that thing is profoundly though.
naijaboiler··on "AI Will Replace All the Jobs " Is Just Tech Execs Doing Marketing
Wrong. More knowledge workers will be needed. The nature of what they do will change
naijaboiler··on Nobel Laureate Daron Acemoglu: Don't Believe the AI Hype
His mistake was in couching it language of Internet adoption rather than the gross impact on economic productivity. He was wrong on the former and mostly right on the latter. It is very possible for a technology to have dramatic effect on society without a big impact on overall economic productivity

Darren acegmolu is making only the latter argument. I’m betting he’s right.

naijaboiler··on Nobel Laureate Daron Acemoglu: Don't Believe the AI Hype
Yup a lot micro factor in aggregate all average/cancel/smoothen out at macro levels, which is why effects at macro levels are more muted and much more predictable
naijaboiler··on How can traditional British TV survive the US streaming giants
They need to figure it a different way to do enforcement that’s not as discriminatory. The current approach leads to disparate outcomes and is therefore inherently discriminatory
naijaboiler··on Even Tesla's Insurance Arm Is Getting Wrecked
This is the answer! It is definitely coming down and will reflect business fundamentals at some point. But please don't try to predict when, or you will lose lots of money. "Market can stay irrational longer than you can remain solvent"
naijaboiler··on FBI arrests judge accused of helping man evade immigration authorities
>>imagine if KKK members deciding to become police officers and how that changes the subjective experience of law by citizens compared to what law says on paper.

You have just described a lot of US policing

naijaboiler··on Mark Zuckerberg says social media is over
would rather use reddit for foruming than facebook groups
naijaboiler··on I Analyzed Chord Progressions in 680k Songs
i know. I was so disappointed reading that article. I had gone in expecting an analysis of progressions. e.g. VI-IV-I-V instead I got a page of chords analysis.

chord progression != chords.

naijaboiler··on I Analyzed Chord Progressions in 680k Songs
says chord progressions, and then just talked about chords without any progressions. disappointing article.
naijaboiler··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
So how are they able to deliver at such low rates and why can’t other work it out and use that as well
naijaboiler··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
A reputable business might not be interested in smuggling, but if you have incentivized smuggling, it will definitely occur
naijaboiler··on Temu pulls its U.S. Google Shopping ads
Every tax, and tariff a tax, is shared between producer and consumer depending on elasticity of demand for the goods
naijaboiler··on Google Is Winning on Every AI Front
Or a hobby
naijaboiler··on Louisiana prison board uses algorithms to determine eligility for parole
No Sir. Algos are bad. they inherently carry a huge risk to accentuate the biases of the datasets from which algos were created. I always get mad when people suggest algos are neutral or objective. they are neither.

They are often just tools to perpetuate inequities in plain site.

naijaboiler··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
in 1800, 95% of American were farmers in 1900, some 65% of Americans were farmers in 2020, it's down to like 5%.

My point is some industries just die. And its okay. The solution is not to go backwards, but tax the winners of the change to subsidize and retrain the people who lost.

But in America, the extreme winners have convinced the rest of us that we shouldn't tax them, and Trump is now asking us to instead tax everyone more

naijaboiler··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Right and wrong. Right if it increases aggregate demand more than available economic production thus leading to inflation.

But if we overall had capacity to tame in the added UBI, then no. Unlike targeted subsidies like EVs, UBI is do much better. Each industry is still competing with other industries

naijaboiler··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
Congratulations you have just re-discovered an Econ 101 concept called deadweight loss
naijaboiler··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
So democrats should spend all this money, time and resources solving a problem they don’t have. And for what purpose? Nah I will rather my Democrat state focus on human welfare and giving people opportunities to progress in life
naijaboiler··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
That’s a government that’s interested and motivated in getting people an ID.

Now imagine the opposite. A government that’s not interested but rather is motivated in denying some people an ID. Why it increases that’s party likelihood of staying in power.

naijaboiler··on AI models miss disease in Black and female patients
I am just tired of skeptics asking innocently. Yes I wish i could take time to look for sources to educate people like you, but I don't. So take my word for it or not. But yes women's medical issue are disproportionately underrepresented, misrepresented and understudied.
naijaboiler··on What is Growth Engineering? A deep dive with MasterClass's former Head of Growth
can engineers please go take a proper stats and design of experiments class. The first anecdote he used about the push-notification is garbage. like pure garbage. If you didn't design the experiment upfront and specify what you were going to measure, doing some SQL'ing after the fact doesn't make it valid. There are quasi-experimental techniques you can use to infer causality, but most are still inferior to a designed experiment.

The problem with post-hoc approach he used is that you can after the fact, always cherry-pick stats (after trying multiple different paths) and eventually find one that shows you it was a success, which is what this so called "growth engineer" did. How about this for a novel idea, engineers stick to engineering but if you want to cosplay as an analyst/data scientist, go learn some statistics and design of experiments.
