You’re spot on… As someone who uses Node/JS for most of my projects, I was actually surprised at how easy math is in python. I was given a homework assignment with the ability to use whatever language I wanted, so I picked JS. After hours wasted trying to do math with large numbers, I switched to python because others seemed to have success with it. Needless to say, I finished the assignment an hour or so after that. (Note, I would still use Node over python for an API any day of the week, personal preference)

Sure, but would you agree that open source tools and being able to choose the tools we want is better? We should have that same freedom when it comes to building authentication into our applications

It is described under the "new tab page" section. I can't really comment on the privacy/advertising concerns but I do know that Opera providers a VPN for you (who know what they are doing behind the scenes) and have their own adblocker built in.

However it is _required_ that you add Sign in With Apple. I'm all for privacy but I disagree with this move because apple said "You must add Apple Sign In" rather than "You must allow one form of anonymous login" which means they are forcing developers to use their tools.

Additionally, if the app only has FB or Google login and you don't use either, you can just not use the app

I don't think this is the right solution. Something like React Native where the core logic is shared but the UI/Views can be tailored to each environment is ideal.

I believe Microsoft released some React Native stuff for desktop and hopefully, there is some work going on for MacOS.

It would be interesting to see what kinds of optimizations they have done in terms of programming languages. For example, Discord releases blog posts now and then on how they squeeze performance out of Elixir

Unrelated but I'm interested to see what stack all of the things mentioned in the article are on. Handling (I'm guessing billions) of requests while getting sub-ms (maybe even microseconds) latencies. Is it all written in Go? If so that is quite impressive.

You could also replace it with Laravel, or any other framework. What I've found is that if you want to be productive, stick with what you know. Don't try to solve problems you don't/probably won't have.

Anyone know of an alternate hosting service that is as simple as including a Dockerfile and changing your DNS, other than Zeit and Heroku?

First, a little background: 4 years ago, I found a chrome extension called Tabbie (https://github.com/jariz/tabbie) and instantly fell in love. However over the years, bits and pieces of the underlying stack started deprecating, and eventually, it stopped working entirely. For the past year or so I couldn't find any comparable chrome extension that worked equally as well, and so I set out to create my own.

Thus I created ctrl-tab. ctrl-tab is an open source Chrome and Firefox extension (powered by Vue.js) which lets you customize your new tab page with feeds from the most popular tech and news sources, including Hacker News! (For the full list of supported data feeds, check the website.) You can add/remove tiles via the menu and drag and drop them to make it look like how want.

Currently, the Chrome extension supports logging into Todoist (very BETA), and I plan on adding many more login options, starting with (Reddit). In addition, I am working on supporting custom RSS feeds to allow you to add any sites that the extension doesn't already cover.

I don't think many people here will agree with you but I do. I use Javascript for almost everything I do because "It just works." Assuming you are running Node 6.0+ and NPM 4+ you'll almost never run into an issue unless you are using something that needs some native packages installed.

Seems like they are still using GitHub but use GitLab for the wiki?

I'm working on something like that in my spare time for myself. I have a bunch of websites and it was quite annoying to have to update the same thing over and over again if there was a bug with one of my middleware so I just extracted out into it's own project. It uses Koa under the hood, but all it essentially does is bring in the most popular Koa middleware and mesh them all together.

I just want to say that the web browser should be Firefox for the sole reason that most people will install chrome and having both chrome and chromium would be confusing.

I feel your pain. The website keeps crashing whenever I try to buy a data pass. However, I was able to get one yesterday by opening the T-Mobile app, signing in, and pressing the chat button in the top right. That let me text a T-Mobile rep instantly who let me buy a pass. Took less than 5 minutes.

IIRC, Samsung Pay is planning to add support for transit cards. Theoretically it would be possible to use something like your Clipper card to pay for a BART ride through your phone. (http://i.imgur.com/JXdsxcr.jpg)

Maybe they should do a comparison of extension support or developer tools? :P

Elixir has a great documentation system built in. I use that.
