naebother··on Multiple US Navy destroyers swarmed by mysterious 'drones' off California coast
The US military/intelligence apparatus is so large it wouldn't surprise me if this is yet another case of the left hand not knowing what the right is up to. Or maybe they had a vague idea, considering they didn't even attempt to shoot them down. Going off the nonchalant response, this is probably not the first time UAVs have flown over their ships. Except this time it was unplanned, and so kicked off an investigation.

I'm getting UFO crank vibes from both authors social media. Also no mention of request for comment from any official in the reporting. Just building a narrative from a selective release of FIOA requests.

naebother··on PyDisAss: A 6502 Disassembler in Python
Nice.
naebother··on Tesla's “full self driving” beta is potentially dangerous
> It is bad enough that when I see Teslas on the road now, I feel unsafe, because the system is so unreliable right now.

At the very least you should be required to put a visual sign that your vehicle is in "FSD" mode. Sort of like how we require "oversize load" signs so that others can take extra precautions around those vehicles.

naebother··on Tesla's “full self driving” beta is potentially dangerous
That's probably part of the calculus, but mainly it's to deliver at least something on an over-promised feature.

I also wonder how good the training examples are, if they're just using average drivers without any quality control. Like when I'm teaching someone to drive, I'm following traffic laws to the tee. But when I'm doing my day to day driving, it's mostly about optimizing time. There's probably a reason why Waymo hired and trained drivers to teach their algo in a standardized way.

naebother··on Tesla's “full self driving” beta is potentially dangerous
Watching the video gives me flashbacks of trying to teach someone to drive. Actually I'd probably prefer that than trying to babysit this headache in traffic. At least then I'd get paid for the hassle.
naebother··on We found and fixed a rare race condition in our session handling

naebother··on A hacker got all my texts for $16
> While adding a number, Sakari provides the Letter of Authorization for the user to sign. Sakari's LOA says that the user should not conduct any unlawful, harassing, or inappropriate behaviour with the text messaging service and phone number. But as Lucky225 showed, a user can just sign up with someone else's number and receive their text messages instead.

Um, what?!

naebother··on Gun sales rise in past year, especially among women and African Americans
> The US is roughly 60% Europe, 25% Latin America, 10% Africa and 5% Asia.

Yes. Everyone knows African Americans have more in common with Africans than Americans. Asian Americans are a monolith, and so is Asia. And Latin Americans speak Latin. Sigh.

naebother··on Gitlab default branch name changes to main
If we must have a struggle-session on this and rename to appease the performative gods, why not just call the default branch, you know, "default"?
naebother··on CDC lets child migrant shelters fill to 100% despite Covid concern
The implication never was that this particular journalist called them anything else. Just the current administration and the broader political culture. I don't think the "kids in cages" framing is as common ever since the election, but there are still some consistent voices calling it what it is.
naebother··on CDC lets child migrant shelters fill to 100% despite Covid concern
I guess we're calling them shelters again.
naebother··on About the March 8 and 9, 2021 Verkada camera hack
We're posting on the internet, buddy. We're all mentally ill.
naebother··on Hackers break into thousands of security cameras, exposing Tesla, jail, hospital
If they've got nothing to hide, they've got nothing to fear.
naebother··on SpaceX plans Starlink broadband for cars, boats, and planes
Throw Neuralink into the mix and the "always connected" nightmare becomes quite literal.
naebother··on America is not made for people who pee
All good points, but I don't understand the title.
naebother··on Someone is hacking the hackers
> Whoever hacked Maza netted thousands of data points about the site’s users, including usernames, email addresses, and hashed passwords, a new report from intelligence firm Flashpoint shows. Two warning messages were then scrawled across the forum’s home page: “Your data has been leaked” and “This forum has been hacked.”

Oh no. Not my username, email address and hashed password. I'm shaking right now. But then again there's always some idiot who doesn't try to anonymize.

naebother··on Nodes.io – A new way to create with code

naebother··on Physicists found 4 new subatomic particles that may test the laws of nature
Probably because we learn about points by drawing them on a graph at some point in math class, so we imagine them having an area. I think points are an abstract construct. Sort of like infinity - you can never truly reach it. Or imagine it.
naebother··on Number Unemployed for 27 Weeks and Over
I thought these numbers were unemployment claims, but looking into it a bit more seems like this is a survey. I was confused by if you can only claim unemployment for on average 26 weeks, then the number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or over would not include those people. But a survey would probably account for these people.
naebother··on Number Unemployed for 27 Weeks and Over
I wonder how much of this is just people no longer able to claim unemployment. Maybe things are different with the current downturn, but I don't remember states extending unemployment benefits for the 08 crash. Also wonder what the quality of the job is compared to before being unemployed.

> Workers in most states are eligible for up to 26 weeks of benefits from the regular state-funded unemployment compensation program, although seven states provide fewer weeks and one provides more.

naebother··on Physicists found 4 new subatomic particles that may test the laws of nature
These particles don't have a volume; they're point-like. They don't exactly have an inside with other particles waiting to burst out. These are just mathematical abstractions after all, good at making some predictions. May or may not be actual reality.
naebother··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
Yes, publishers being part of the elite but also the academic and media class. And I don't really care if they're left-wing or right-wing, whatever that means. I just want the general public to have access to books they're curious about, and especially so if they're deemed controversial. Yes, books go out of print all the time, but public libraries still mange to circulate them around to where they're requested.
naebother··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
Obviously, you can't carry every book ever forever. I just meant that the general public should have timely access to books deemed too controversial by the elites, so that the plebs may make up their own mind.
naebother··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
I wouldn't if I had any. They're going to become collectibles eventually and could fetch you a decent amount. My totally true conspiracy-theory is, the dr-seus-industrial-complex is at it again, manipulating the collectible editions market to make bank.
naebother··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
> It is one thing for libraries and bookstores to decide not to offer for borrowing or sale things that they disagree with.

Private libraries can do whatever they like. Public ones should be required to carry even the most offensive book.

naebother··on Google to stop selling ads based on your specific web browsing
> Instead, Google says its ad-buying tools will use new technologies it has been developing with others in what it calls a “privacy sandbox” to target ads without collecting information about individuals from multiple websites. One such technology analyzes users’ browsing habits on their own devices, and allows advertisers to target aggregated groups of users with similar interests, or “cohorts,” rather than individual users.

Oh, turns out you're in a cohort of 1. Privacy sandboxed.

naebother··on AI ethics research conference suspends Google sponsorship
Good. Imagining a world where Lockheed no longer wants to sponsor the cluster-munitions ethics conference and that's viewed as a negative.
naebother··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
I'm guessing you're referring to the first sentence in section 1:

> The "source code" for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it. "Object code" means any non-source form of a work.

I don't think that's referring to the method by which I make changes or manage those changes. It's simply trying to make it clear that source-code is something that should be in a form you can actually change, and not something obfuscated. e.g. minified, transpiled, object-code, etc. The second sentence gives the first more context.

The spirit of all GNU licenses is that the end-user should have the freedom and ability to understand or modify software that's *distributed* to them for themselves. It has nothing to do with having a full history of the source-code available. What does full history even mean? I'd like every auto-save to every LGPL licensed file, please.

naebother··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
> Besides the commit raising questions about Gab’s process for developing secure code, the social media site is also facing criticism for removing the commits from its website. Critics say the move violates terms of the Affero General Public License, which governs Gab’s reuse of Mastodon, an open source software package for hosting social networking platforms.

Lmao, that's not how AGPL works. Although, it would be pretty funny if a license explicitly required you to post all your Ls for public ridicule.
