nachtigall··on Riseup moves to encrypted email in response to legal requests
I'd like to recommend https://posteo.de/en which also has strong encryption on various layers, including the user's data: https://posteo.de/en/site/encryption
nachtigall··on Grappling with Go
For Rust, probably Redox (https://www.redox-os.org/). Then there's http://os.phil-opp.com/ and https://intermezzos.github.io/book/

For Go, I don't know any (but might be wrong, googling did not turn up anything).

nachtigall··on Chrome Widevine DRM can no longer be disabled
Worst thing is that a site does not work with Firefox, so that one is forced to use Chrome.

Happens for the map at Google Flights (https://www.google.de/flights/) that is the No 1 search result when googling for Flights (that's of course a clever move by Google to create a top site that only works fine with Chrome, I wonder how long it will take that YouTube or GMail only work "optimal" with Chrome)

Anyway, I filed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1329141 but this is only P3 priority (that is, marked a "valid" bug but nobody is working on it). Which I found really "strange" because website not working in Firefox and being force to temporally switching to Chrome (and maybe staying) are the worst that can happen. Eventually, when booking a flight I even had to tell other family members that they should use Chrome for it (who were surprised because normally I tell them to use Firefox ;)

nachtigall··on Using Immutable Caching to Speed Up the Web
The last image about Squid proxy is included too small in the post, here it is in a readable way: https://hacks.mozilla.org/files/2016/12/sq.png
nachtigall··on What’s up with Firefox?
about:performance gives no insights? It could be just one add-on that spoils it all, unfortunately.
nachtigall··on What’s up with Firefox?
> Why ? Firefox still feels slower in loading and showing web pages. It seems to freeze up occasionally. The new tab opening and scrolls have occasional jitters, sometimes sufficient to bring me out of my "flow".

In my experience: You should "refresh" your Firefox, see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13227658 It help in my case.

nachtigall··on What’s up with Firefox?
Did you try to "refresh"? See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13227658

I think the concept of "Context Graph" in the sense of crowd-sourced indexing and recommendation system might the best approach to taggle Google search - in the long run. We all parse (our browser) the web all time, this could be a basis for site recommendation (and search).
nachtigall··on Google AMP Is Not a Good Thing
AMP is about lock-in. I'll just leave this here: http://robert.ocallahan.org/2014/08/choose-firefox-now-or-la...
nachtigall··on From OS X to Ubuntu
Look at what your competitors did and why they failed. There's been two or three businesses like this in Germany in the 2000s - and I think they were not too successful (cannot remember their names).

Mostly, because preinstalled with Windows and then installing yourself is still cheaper than buying from a small, single trader.

nachtigall··on iPhone at ten: the revolution continues
When people start noticing that it's Superlative Bullshit Bingo, then it's bad marketing actually ;)
nachtigall··on iPhone at ten: the revolution continues
Sure, but it's interesting that now that the communist (in the mainstream meaning) counterpart does not exist anymore (except small enclaves like Cuba or North Korea) - that big capitalist corporates - or their propaganda, pardon, public relations department - take over the very same language.

Also a bit of Orwell's Newspeak in here as well. In the end it's funny of course :)

nachtigall··on iPhone at ten: the revolution continues
"The revolution continues" (or "Uber movement", the other frontpage entry on HN) - why does this all sound like communist propaganda?!
nachtigall··on Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice (2014)
> trying to edit live code

You mean JS code in the debugger? You may want to raise an issue for this in the new debugger which seems much faster developement progress: https://github.com/devtools-html/debugger.html

Or html in Inspector or CSS in the rule view?

nachtigall··on Choose Firefox Now, Or Later You Won't Get A Choice (2014)
I do not think that Nightly should be any slower than say Dev Edition (Aurora) or the stable release. What's your default page when opening a new tab? Maybe it's because your start page needs long to load?! Mine is "about:home" (set with https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-overr...)

In my experience the firefox devtools are much better (more features, better UX) than Firebug nowadays. I've been using them for one and a half years now (Firebug before).

Give it a try: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools/Migrating_fro... and https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Tools

Thanks, Google: Now I use Firefox where the add-on is still available :)

nachtigall··on Firebug lives on in Firefox DevTools
That would be a welcome change. I even say so as a Developer. You can't imagine how often I hit some keys by accident and some DevTools panel turns up - I wonder how that must feel to "normal" users (thinking of my mother here ;)
nachtigall··on Firebug lives on in Firefox DevTools
Don't think you're right. You can use FDE for add-ons development, just like parent said.

See your sibling below: > Unsigned addons cannot be enabled on beta or release. That was only available for a limited time. Now they can only be enabled on alpha (aka developer), nightly, or special unbranded builds.

nachtigall··on Why are browsers so slow?
You might want to "Refresh" your Firefox: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-a... It help for me. Especially if you many add-ons over time that might have done all kind of things to your settings...

Backup/Restore your bookmarks etc. afterwards as it cleans up everything. Resetting everything afterwards took 1h for me but was totally worth it in retrospective.

nachtigall··on Why are browsers so slow?
Wow, using Firefox for 15 years and did not know. Here's a link to the docs I found now: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/awesome-bar-search-fire...
nachtigall··on Firebug lives on in Firefox DevTools
More features, 2 releases (12 weeks) faster. If you can handle bugs from time to time (rarely), then it's all great (for me it is, writing this from the Dev Edition ;)
nachtigall··on Firebug lives on in Firefox DevTools
For instance, I like the inspector much better as it has vertical/horizontal lines which helps with alignment. Also I like the new (Firefox 52) "invisible" text nodes feature.

Overall, I like the (dark) theme UI/UX better, and also the DOM node hightlighting better.

The eyedropper and the full page screenshot tool are great too (do not know if Chrome also has it). And using all these tools from the devtools command line: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Tools/GCLI

There are drawbacks like the new debugger which is missing a lot common tiny usability features currently (making it hard to use) - and it's still buggy. But it's rewritten from scratch using modern technologies like react/webpack. So it's evolving fast.

Edit: Fixed typos.

You mean this https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=987877 ?

You might want to leave a comment on how/why (use case) you used it to help to priorize the bug.

There's a Firebug Gaps meta bug which depends on this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=991806

> Speaking of the builtin tools, I found an old announcement about the Page Inspector 3D View which I recently wondered what happened to since it disappeared not long after it was introduced. Apparently it's available as an addon instead now so you can still have it

Unfortunately, tilt (or 3D View) does not work with e10s (multiprocess) enabled. There's a bugreport/issue somewhere at bugzilla:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=937166

nachtigall··on Firebug lives on in Firefox DevTools
I don't understand. Can you elaborate? Have there been previous plan like this by old Opera?
nachtigall··on Firebug lives on in Firefox DevTools
> As an aside I always kind of wondered why all browsers started including developer tools by default as they are not of use to 99.9% of users.

AFAIK the firefox devtools team has plans/ideas that the devtools could just used like a normal Web App (loaded from a server). Currently, they are migrating XUL based components over to normal html what would make this possible.

As an example, just like debugger.html which can even be used from any browser in a not-builtin way: https://github.com/devtools-html/debugger.html
