Yes :) all current browser engines have their roots in the Nineties (webkit is also based on KHTML). This is what WebRender (part of Servo) to be added to Firefox Quantum / Gecko will change.
nachtigall··on Firefox will soon flag sites that have been hacked
Totally in favor of this, but I hope Firefox will turn this into a test pilot experiment first: https://testpilot.firefox.com/experiments

In order to gain information/feedback about the best UI for this before baking it into the browser.

> you have to do weird css hacks to make it look seemless and hide the top tab bar is very disappointing

Firefox plans to add an API for dynamically hiding the tabbar. You can follow progress here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1332447

nachtigall··on Fearless Concurrency in Firefox Quantum
Mind sharing the link to the bug? I'd like to follow it as I think it would be a good enhancement.
nachtigall··on Fearless Concurrency in Firefox Quantum
I think you should open a bug report about this at bugzilla.mozilla.org I did the same for several feature requests or ideas and the firefox developers and community is very nice and responsive (I'd say most of my bug reports were fixed within days/weeks whereas feature request usuallly takes longer - but is always consider).

They are very open to feedback!

nachtigall··on Fearless Concurrency in Firefox Quantum
Looks like this has been fixed now: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1353319

If you grab Nightly (I've been using it for a year now for frontend development and my normal browsing and it's just fine) you can test it.

nachtigall··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
Just for completeness:

* Firefox's Awesomebar (the address bar) is much more powerful. Whereas Chromes sends you to google mainly: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/awesome-bar-search-fire...

* Tree Style Tab: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/tree-style-tab/

nachtigall··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
With Tree Style Tabs plus the Awesome bar it is not a problem to handle and it's easy to get up to this number over the day.
nachtigall··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
FWIW, Firefox is still number one in Germany (desktop only) which is not an to be underrated economy.

> 3. Firefox also has completely separate profiles, in addition to container tabs.

hey callahad, thanks for shiming in. My biggest pain with profiles is that you cannot use separate profiles at the same time. A Firefox instance can only run one at the same time, making it useless to run e.g. a work and a private profile together. Container tabs also do not help here because they share the same history which I do not want for privacy reasons.

Nonetheless, thanks for a great release!

nachtigall··on How Firefox Got Fast Again
> you could run multiple Firefox instances with different profiles

But not at the same time, which is a showstopper to me (still using Firefox Nightly as main browser).

nachtigall··on Firefox Quantum
ah, thanks.

If you have that many tabs, one should use tab tree style anyway, i guess: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15652124

nachtigall··on Firefox Quantum

How can you scroll through tabs? What do you mean by this?

nachtigall··on Firefox Quantum
As sibling said: Change the tab 'density' in Firefox from 'normal' to 'compact' under Customize > Density (at bottom).
nachtigall··on Documenting the Web together
I find duckduckgo much better for these kind of searches. It also shows a brief instant result which is usually an excerpt from MDN.

Actually, I find duckduckgo better for all kinds of technical searches these days.

nachtigall··on The web at maximum FPS: How WebRender gets rid of jank
As said in sibling: Open a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

Mention Quantum Flow and "performance" in it. Make sure to attach a performance profile with https://perf-html.io/ using the linked add-on there.

I had many cases where the mozilla devs were glad about such bug reporst (especially if you are on Linux - I am too :) - which is not so often used and reported like Windows or Mac)

nachtigall··on The web at maximum FPS: How WebRender gets rid of jank
I guess you should open a bug report on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

Mention Quantum Flow and "performance" in it. It worked for me in the past that performance issues I had were solved within a few weeks or days.

Make sure to attach a performance profile with https://perf-html.io/ using the linked add-on there.

nachtigall··on Show HN: Doogie – A Chromium-Based Browser with Tree-Style Pages
> It was too power-user for what we were going for

Chrome might as well support the Sidebar API to make this possible like Firefox will do with Tree-Tab-Style Add-on iirc. I read a bug report once at the Chromium bug tracker saying roughly "Sidebar API wont be implemented because UI needs to stay simple".

nachtigall··on Firefox Multi-Account Containers
No, but please upvote if you also want this feature ;)

nachtigall··on A note on programmer salaries
> And negotiate.

Even better, negotiate collectively. It's easy to lay off one person but you cannot lay off a whole branch (or all employees ideally).

I know I'm dreaming but there are decades if not centuries of experiences of worker struggles about better salaries or working condition. And well, there are just basics, to be learnt about. If you are on a one-by-one negotiating with your boss in private, then you are in an environment where you've already lost.

It's no surprise that in all other industries salaries working conditions are negotiated (and fought for) collectively.

nachtigall··on uBlock Origin Maintainer on Chrome vs. Firefox WebExtensions
To add to the list:

* You can run the uBlock Origin on Firefox for Android: https://addons.mozilla.org/EN-US/android/addon/ublock-origin...

Afaik there's no ad-blocking extension for Chrome for Android which I find pretty telling. I'm using Firefox on Android and the ad-blocking (less traffic, less blink-blink animations and less CPU consumption) make mobile browsing a night-day difference

nachtigall··on Firefox 55: first desktop browser to support WebVR

nachtigall··on Firefox marketshare revisited
> Firefox changed how plugins work and I think that broke Google's Hangout implementation.

IIRC, there was s public notice by Firefox about the API change more than a year in advance. Google does not have the resources for implementation? Firefox support is just low prio for Google. I think it's a deliberate (non)-action because instead of switching away from Hangout, people rather start using Chrome... So not-browser-compat seems to help Google :-/ (see also my other comment)

nachtigall··on Firefox marketshare revisited
Yes, cross-browser support seems to be a low prio for Google nowadays. And the bad thing is that it does not hurt them but helps them to succeed.

I wished that instead of switching to Chrome, people would instead move away from Google Services like Hangout (Skype, WhatsApp, https://meet.jit.si/) or Gmail (posteo, mailbox.org) whenever they see a "This works even better in Chrome" notice…

nachtigall··on Firefox marketshare revisited
I am running Firefox 56 (Nightly) and it is very fast due to project Quantum. Even faster than Firefox 54 which also got a big boost due to e10s.

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/#night...

If Firefox 54 is still slow for you, I would be interested if multiprocess is enabled (look at about:support). Also, what does about:performance say?

If still slow you might want to do a Refresh: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-a...

nachtigall··on Reasons to Switch from Chrome to Firefox
Nightly on Android also has an option on to block Tracking (which effectively blocks also ads). That is, like Tracking Blocking in Private mode, but always "on". This option is not yet available in the non-Nightly releases.

If you do not want to use Nightly, then the normal Firefox together with the addons "ublock origin" and/or Privacy badger should not be much different than Firefox Focus, but still allow for tabs.

https://addons.mozilla.org/EN-US/android/addon/ublock-origin...

https://addons.mozilla.org/de/android/addon/privacy-badger17...

nachtigall··on Reasons to Switch from Chrome to Firefox
Try Nightly. I've used it for a year now without problems. Also install ublock origin there for displaying all the js-heavy ads. I also sync it with Firefox for Desktop.

For me it's the opposite: Chrome on Android is not usable because of all these ads.
