nabeards··on A toxic, nightmarish lake created by our thirst for tech
I also use an iPhone 6 as my main (and only) phone. I have the latest updates installed on it and just had a new battery installed in June. It works perfectly well! Of note, possibly, is that I have neither Facebook nor Twitter installed. I do use a slew of other apps though, without issue.
nabeards··on Climate Disruption Is Now Locked In. The Next Moves Will Be Crucial
‘Where it’s most effective’ == places that use their energy during the day, e.g, any place close-ish to the equator that needs daytime cooling.

Solar farms can be deployed at large scale in less than three years. Here’s India adding 7 MW in that timeframe: https://www.greenlaunches.com/alternative-energy/less-three-...

We do have lots of solar panels and lots of solar panel manufacturing capacity. I don’t think we have the nuclear resources we need to produce as fast.

nabeards··on Climate Disruption Is Now Locked In. The Next Moves Will Be Crucial
How long will it take to build all those nuclear plants? Not sure there’s enough time. It seems rapid deployment of solar where its most effective would be the quickest route to effect change.
nabeards··on The Manslaughter of 200k
The book described, "Unprepared: America in the Time of Coronavirus", tells the events in a unique way as a timeline of quotes. Seems like a valuable piece of history to review. (I have no affiliation.)
nabeards··on Pine64 September update
Which distros are your parents and nieces running? Every time I try to find the ‘user friendliest’ Linux, there’s just too much outdated and/or bad info out there.
nabeards··on How long since Google said a Google Drive Linux client is coming?
I use odrive, works better than any native cloud client IMO. Connects to Google Drive and many others.
nabeards··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
This doesn't work for me. Are you dropping the full folder or all the items in it? And you are dropping onto a table in Numbers?
nabeards··on Ask HN: Anyone a social entrepreneur, i.e. placing social impact above profit?
As mentioned, your email isn’t in your profile but would love more info on this as I am in a country where this would be a perfect fit.
nabeards··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
This is my top discovery this year, been using it for a few months now.
nabeards··on Turns out half the internet has a single-point-of-failure called “Cloudflare”
Since you’re here, any response to the top comment re: inaccessibility to disabled persons?
nabeards··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
I converted to Apple Numbers about a year after it came out, and both Excel and Google Sheets seem completely archaic to me now. I've sent PDFs of my Numbers docs to people and they are blown away. Now that I can share Numbers through iCloud to both Mac and Windows users, I've got some people fully converted over.
nabeards··on Let them paste passwords (2017)
If you are on macOS, I have two Services I use to get around these.

Paste as Keyed Characters types in the contents of the clipboard for you [0].

Paste AlphaNumeric Only will only paste in letters and numbers from the clipboard [1]. Very useful when pasting contact phone numbers into forms that only allow numbers.

nabeards··on Basecamp’s founders are trying to start an email rebellion
I love IMAP, I just wish I could disable IDLE in macOS Mail Mojave or later. I prefer no interruptions, but can’t turn them off now.

Maybe HEY will kick some of these ideas back to the forefront.

nabeards··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Could you elaborate on your automation toolset?
nabeards··on US customs and border protection is flying a surveillance drone over Minneapolis
>...immediately reach...

One would have to ignore a large part of history in addition to events over the last 20 years to make the claim that this was a knee-jerk reaction.

nabeards··on Ask HN: Looking for side project ideas
Previously mentioned to you, but Rome2Rio is pretty good at this already. Also carless here, and it’s worked wonders.
nabeards··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
I've never used DoorDash nor Uber Eats, and the one time I used Grubhub was a disaster. Don't use these services and you can help stop this insanity.
nabeards··on Redis 6.0 GA
Just a quick thank you for your work. Redis has always been a fantastically easy-to-approach key storage for me and other people I’ve worked with.
nabeards··on Software Is Polluting the World
I’ve wondered this same thing for about 20 years. It almost seems a no-brainer for the credit card companies (Citi, Chase, what have you) or Visa, MC, etc., to have started doing this at some point. But alas, here we are printing on dead trees that I then digitally capture and throw away )-:
nabeards··on The Anti-Amazon Alliance
Just curious: what are using instead? I use a homegrown solution, at least 3 orders of magnitude cheaper than anything I’ve found.
nabeards··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
This is the key: ...where the latter has the legal means which enable it to identify the data subject with additional data which the internet service provider has about that person
nabeards··on I Spent $6M on Google Ads Last Year
I thought this wasn’t true unless you had other data to aid in linking the IP address directly to the person (in http://curia.europa.eu/juris/document/document.jsf?text=&doc...).

So unless you have additional identifiers, an IP address by itself isn’t enough.

nabeards··on Saving money on international payments as a remote freelancer
TW support told me they just don’t support an account in another country that isn’t in that country’s native currency. Which seemed odd. This was about a year ago.
nabeards··on Saving money on international payments as a remote freelancer
I tried to use TW to transfer from a client’s UK bank account that was in USD, to my US bank account also in USD. I couldn’t find a way to choose this in the estimator, so I contacted tech support. They replied that this was a scenario they didn’t cover. I continue to get regular wires between the accounts, costs $25 in Interbank and my place charges an additional $10. ):
nabeards··on Mycroft – An open-source voice assistant
Please share! The community can help with ‘readiness’ (:
nabeards··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
For my last few projects, I’ve started by building with a document-based database knowing a rewrite will come within 6-12 months. On rewrite, I can design the new relational db with 5NF very quickly.
nabeards··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
Tangent: doesn’t the decade end at the end of next year?
nabeards··on Tell HN: CNN Lite no longer functional
That would be quite unfortunate.
