nabeards··on Why is Warner Bros. Discovery putting old movies on YouTube?
As someone who has built a streaming service, I’m always amazed how much money the studios throw at it and don’t have something good or profitable. The infra cost for my service was then 10% of revenue. I just wish the huge consolidation hadn’t happened, now all of the studios are too protective of their content.

If anyone has ideas for re-purposing or re-targeting a streaming service, I’m all ears.

nabeards··on Show HN: Jelly – A simpler shared inbox for small teams
Quick feedback: Couldn’t watch the video because it requires a YouTube account
nabeards··on Gitlab is reportedly up for sale
Does Forgejo use git? It’s not obvious from the ‘what is forgejo?’ documentation.
nabeards··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
Thanks for this info. I was wondering if you could turn off the backlight, would it be more like the reMarkable (which I love).
nabeards··on Roll-Invert-Unroll: An easier way to replace a duvet cover
Works well for pillowcases as well.

Tuck the corners into each other, fold up the rectangle.

...and AppleTV+ streaming just came back.
nabeards··on Tell HN: Apple TV Service Down
Library just started playing again.
nabeards··on Ask HN: How do I enable the Meta Business Suite?
Darn, nuthin’!
nabeards··on Ask HN: How do I enable the Meta Business Suite?
If any Meta or Facebook folks can help, I’d surely appreciate it!
nabeards··on Physical cash is dying–and you don't need to be a conspiracist to worry
Yes, we do. But nobody we know does. We are fanatic at tracking our spending too, though, and that seems to be a dying art.
nabeards··on WD refused to answer our questions about its self-wiping SanDisk SSDs
Scrubbed as in erased? Where do you temporarily place 1PB+ of data while that’s happening?
nabeards··on Gene linked to long Covid found in analysis of thousands of patients
I figured you likely meant the legal definition, but it’s unfortunate how few people realize the logic of this.
nabeards··on Gene linked to long Covid found in analysis of thousands of patients
Genetic information literally is PII.
nabeards··on ThinMachine – A $25 thin client macOS Time Machine appliance
I have found that Asimov alleviates this issue.

I wrote a tiny blurb about it here:

nabeards··on Ask HN: If you could only use one, would you pick Google or Reddit?
I currently use neither, so get rid of both.
nabeards··on Ask HN: Most interesting tech you built for just yourself?
Not parent, but you might try Wine on a Dime reviews on YouTube (reviews wines under $20) or WineAndCheeseFriday.com (reviews various wines including easy-to-find ones).

Full Disclosure: I am affiliated with the latter :)

nabeards··on How to change the region on an HP OfficeJet printer in 57 easy steps
Not OP, but I think they mean changing their mobile number setting inside of their online accounts is impossible. When they moved, they got a new number format but their existing account won’t let them change the format.
nabeards··on Twilio is laying off 17% of workforce
One thing that seems to go unmentioned, unless I missed it, is that many of these companies bought other companies and brought over those teams. Initially, they probably needed more members of those acquired teams than they do now that those products are integrated. So layoffs are almost guaranteed in that sense.

Add in higher interest rates mentioned elsewhere, and instead of buying more and more companies (which means you can move staff around to new teams), there isn’t any buying so layoffs are the result.

nabeards··on FCC threatens to disconnect Twilio for illegal robocalls
You should plainly state you are the CEO of Plivo before shilling it as a "leading alternative".
nabeards··on Ask HN: What have you created that deserves a second chance on HN?
Fantastic! I also used patrikhson's photo-export tool to help me restore all of my lost iPhoto Events after a strange sync issue the first time I enabled iCloud Photo Library in...maybe 2016? I was able to restore all of my lost events as albums in Photos writing code based on their script.

Your tool looks incredibly useful, will def keep for some batch date fixes I need to do.

nabeards··on Tell HN: Airbnb has no system in place when a host cancels on a renter
Would there be any benefit to an independent review site? Linking to the Airbnb listing, with unfiltered reviews? Just a thought.
nabeards··on “Nobody cares about your blog”
Welcome to HN! And Happy Christmas!

Just wanted to say I’m sorry this happened, and hope you get a true, useful response in the end.

nabeards··on Ask HN: digital nomads what mic is handy in a cafe or restaurant for video call?
As a fellow digital nomad, I would never do a video call in a busy cafe or restaurant. Or in public at all for that matter.
nabeards··on Don’t think to write, write to think
Personally, the transfer-ability of the notes themselves and the ability to use it to present over video conference. I can email notes directly to others, I can OCR them to text and send to myself to then transfer to whatever I need them in on my computer, and with remote sharing I can hook it up via USB to my computer, share my screen, and have the nicest digital whiteboard for meetings I’ve ever used.

For ‘thinking process’ specifically, I think it’s the ability to have unlimited notebooks in one device. Often while writing notes for one thing I’m inspired about something else, so I can quickly switch to that notebook and jot it down.

nabeards··on Don’t think to write, write to think
Same here, though I recently got a reMarkable 2 to replace my paper and love it more than I could have imagined. It’s a magical device for me (no affiliation).
nabeards··on Got a rejection for mentioning Apple pre-release software, but I am not
Thanks, I was at a loss as to how Continuity Camera was related.
nabeards··on Programming breakthroughs we need
Reminds of my time doing WebObjects development, and I fully agree that it seems like the frameworks I use today ( ReactJS, FeathersJS) aren’t (yet?) as simple to visually develop.
nabeards··on My favorite iPhone feature was removed, long live its subpar replacement
For your autocorrect issue with other languages: in addition to having the keyboards activated, do you also have the languages activated in Settings / General / Language & Region? I had to have both the keyboard enabled and the language in here to stop the default-language only autocorrects.
