n1000··on Ask HN: What is the difference between Burnout/Depression/Laziness/Wrong job?
ADHD is missing in the list. Many undiagnosed adults with ADHD consider themselves lazy and / or stupid. However, the disorder has important impact on the executive function of the brain and also on emotional regulation (depression is a common comorbidity and is often falsely diagnosed as bipolar disorder). Oh and ADHD makes people more prone to burnout.
n1000··on Ask HN: How do you organise your hard drive?
Withought Spotlight I‘d be lost
n1000··on Facts about smell (2014)
For those interested in the olfactory world, there is this beautiful novel „Perfume: The Story of a Murderer” by Patrick Süskind. I read it as a teenager and it changed my world. Unfortunately, the title already suggests that the English translation may not be as good as the original in German.
n1000··on The U.S. Yield Curve Has Inverted
In the article there is actually a link hidden that provides just that info

n1000··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
To those of you that complain about battery life. I noticed that using Safari as my browser gives me almost an hour extra compared to Firefox. To me it seems that newer CPU may be more efficient overall, but they seem to consume more power under medium to heavy load.
n1000··on The Human Brain Is a Time Traveler
Sad that the collective intelligence of our species appears more limited however. We seem unable to act on the imminent threats of climate change, biodiversity loss, etc.
n1000··on The life and death of a laptop battery (2015)
Sorry, why would I want that? Didn't they have smart overcharge protection yet?
n1000··on You Want 20% for Handing Me a Muffin? The Awkward Etiquette of iPad Tipping
Haha. Glad to see this. I’m new to the US and thought the tip was expected...
n1000··on Apple Shortcuts User Guide
I downloaded “Calculate tip” from their library and it returns total garbage. Most of the time it adds some random percentage to the total I enter instead of calculating 20% of it. Maybe it has to do with my regional settings, but I already stopped bothering.
n1000··on Ask HN: Best email client for a Mac?
Wait - you mean it is possible to properly archive messages on my mac now? Without having to run a local IMAP server? If I remember correctly that was the only solution at the time. Time to take another look it seems.
n1000··on Ask HN: Best email client for a Mac?
I was very close to jumping ship with Mailmate 2 or 3 times. But the only reason that kept me from doing so is that it does not offer an option for local backups.
n1000··on Ask a Knifemaker: The Truth About Damascus Steel
To my understanding Damascus was indeed not needed anymore as sword fighting came out of fashion. For swords it was very useful to have flexible yet sharp blades. Or has Damascus steel been traditionally used for knives too?
n1000··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
> I've been doing hours-long CPU+GPU intensive tasks (compiling ghc, number crunching, playing games like Bioshock Infinite and StarCraft II on a HD4000) on a bunch of pre-retina MBP and rMBP 13" and they never throttled.

I find that hard to believe. I have been gaming a lot on MacBook Pro unibodies and retinas with and without an external GPUs. Especially when the internal GPU is active, the thermal load is just too high for many games and applications.

Throttling normally starts in a very subtle way by disabling clock boost and is hard to notice. Throttling below the base clock is rare and this is where it becomes really noticeable.

n1000··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
Isn't the 4 GHz meant as a boost frequency as thermals allow? The more CPUs are active the rarer this happens. It becomes problematic when the CPU can't maintain its base clock speed anymore.
n1000··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
Yes, I also think we need to see more tests with other apps than Adobe Premiere.

Does Premiere use the GPU as well? The thermal system of the MBP needs to handle the combined thermal load of GPU an CPU.

n1000··on Fridge 0.1
Nice project. Dependig on the location a ground fridge could be an alternative. Soil temperature is close to the annual mean in a few meters depth. https://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/Cooling/EarthTemperatu...
n1000··on Ask HN: Why does P2P encrypted messaging still suck?
Did you consider https://threema.ch/en yet? I have been using it for years and it is great (iOS and Android). The developers keep adding new useful features to stay on par with Whatsapp etc. For instance, their web chat is currently in beta.
n1000··on Sleeping in rooms with even a little light can increase risk of depression
The f.lux website has a ‚research‘ section with plenty of reading material on the issue: https://justgetflux.com/research.html
n1000··on U.S. Has Been Watching Russia's Nuclear-Powered Cruise Missiles Crash and Burn
Anyone knows of some reading material on how such an engine could technically work? I wonder how a nuclear reactor could create propulsion.
n1000··on Being a perfectionist is an obstacle and how to beat it
I think there is a very thin line between perfectionism and being insecure. For instance, a person with ADHD is prone to doing a lot of errors and overlooking obvious issues. One coping mechanism is to triple check whatever you do. Some people may have developed this strategy early on in their childhood and never realized.
n1000··on Apple Music on Track to Overtake Spotify in U.S. Subscribers
On T-mobile in the US, spotify streaming doesn’t count against mobile data quota ;)
n1000··on How WeChat Came to Rule China
Yes, my Chinese colleagues were also surprised. Apparently the requirement seems to be a new thing.
n1000··on How WeChat Came to Rule China
it was a step in the registration process that I could not skip
n1000··on Thunderbolt 3 Unblocker
nvidia gtx 970. My setup is pretty diy with an external 200W power supply. Today I would get one of those nice enclosures mentioned in the article. You loose around 10% performance compared to an internal GPU.

BTW: Windows 10 also has pretty solid eGPU support on my MBP at least.

n1000··on Thunderbolt 3 Unblocker
I've been using eGPUs for gaming (on Windows though) on my MacBook Pro for a few years now. macOS introduced official eGPU support and now there seem to be numerous compatible enclosures: https://egpu.io/macos-high-sierra-official-external-gpu/
n1000··on How WeChat Came to Rule China
In my team a lot of people use WeChat. So I set out to give it a try. When I was forced to leave my voiceprint [1], I chickened out and aborted the registration.

n1000··on A therapy chatbot and app for depression and anxiety
> So Woebot has moved away from Facebook and launched as a stand-alone app that only requires a first name to sign up; Darcy described the app as anonymous.

Err, so why do I have to register my phone number before I can do anything with the app?

n1000··on XPS 13 developer edition 7th generation available
Yes. I was ready to finally replace my MacBook Pro with the XPS. The main reason being the presence of one USB A port. That is now gone and I already start to reconsider the MacBook.
n1000··on FoldingText – Plain text productivity for Mac users
Currently in love with typora.io

Less features but an excellent markdown editor for Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu

n1000··on Ask HN: What software/service helps you be an effective remote developer?
Zoom is amazing. I particularly appreciate that I can do videoconferencing with multiple people without the fans of my MBP making a lot of noise, as it is the case with skype or appear.in
