Before the skeptical comments rush in
If the comment is in relation to the criticism to Mark's donations, I think this is a non sequitur... I believe people understand that in large orgs there are factions that operate with different motives. Also this is a good cause so perhaps it helps their image too. So people won't be too critical of it.
myth_buster··on Mapping Student Debt
It just looks like student debt is correlated to population density[0] and inversely correlated to median income [1].

The difference between the delinquency map and average loan balance maps shows that people from places with low median income are taking lower loans but are still struggling to pay it back perhaps due to lack of jobs.

I do have concerns regarding the scale used.

myth_buster··on The anonymous Silicon Valley satire that has stumped tech world insiders

charm seems to be in the physicality of it
From what they are saying, they are impressed by the typesetting and graphics. And the novelty of having one of 140 books in production.
myth_buster··on The 100-Hour Rule
Essentially a power law relationship...

If your team lacks experience in some of those areas, don't just
wing it and hope for the best. Invest a little bit of time into
learning and basic competence so that you don't hamstring yourself
by making rookie, easily avoidable mistakes. In the long run, you'll
  want to hire experts;
Wouldn't another viable option be freelancing that task?
myth_buster··on A letter to our daughter
If I may paraphrase the sentiment here:

Firstly,

Their public pledge to donate 45 billion dollars
That number is based on current valuation of Fb and cannot be equated to someone writing a check for $45B. If Fb goes the MySpace way, how much is that donation worth?

Secondly there appears to be a duality between how the company operates and what this post tries to rally for.

Finally, using the pretense of writing a letter to their newly born daughter rubs some the wrong way.

myth_buster··on A letter to our daughter
I would like to draw your attention to the time when the fb hit the privacy scandal and it was brought to light that the founder and CEO was too privacy conscious and shared little to nothing on his site.

May be I'm too cynical as I see that there was a conscious effort to post more updates. Recently I see another shift following the Internet.org initiative.

myth_buster··on A letter to our daughter
I think it's a good sign if people don't take words at face value and be critical of it.

And on the other hand we have the public companies, lacking strong leadership, forced to look at quarterly returns.

Now I don't feel too bad about Fb snubbing Telegram. /s

I'm curious how they plan to liquidate that shares as it will have quite some effect on the dynamics of Fb and on this:

I will continue to serve as Facebook's CEO for many, many years to come

myth_buster··on Linux Performance Analysis

For a massive server the CPU reading might not be unusual. Maybe it has
32+ CPU cores and a multi-threaded java app is spinning most of them.
Yes, the article states that

  The %CPU column is the total across all CPUs;
1591% shows that that java processes is consuming almost 16 CPUs.

Could someone with the time and resource at hand independently decompile and verify the veracity of the code?

It looks a bit fishy as it reads like an actual code as opposed to one outputted from a decompiler.

myth_buster··on India’s Economic Growth Accelerates
Significant point mentioned midway:

The country’s growth also got a boost this year when
government statisticians changed the way they calculated GDP.
From the linked article:

The Indian statistics ministry said that after updating the base year
used for marking trends in the economy and switching to a
market-price calculation of gross domestic product, the economy grew
by 6.9% in the year that ended last March. Using the previous
methodology, GDP expansion that year was 4.7%. China’s economy grew
by 7.4% in the 2014 calendar year.

myth_buster··on This Is Not a Day Care. It’s a University
I agree with the jist of what is said by the president, but while reading this I felt the religious intonations were a bit strong and the article not object enough. Reading your comment does provide correlation to the strong religious sentiments.

Also their mission statement:

As an evangelical Christian university of The Wesleyan Church, Oklahoma
Wesleyan University models a way of thought, a way of life, and a way of
faith. It is a place of serious study, honest questions, and critical
engagement, all in the context of a liberal arts community that honors the
Primacy of Jesus Christ, the Priority of Scripture, the Pursuit of Truth, and
  the Practice of Wisdom.

For me it was present day US in place of Germany.

It would be interesting if people reading this would say here which country they associated Germany to. I suppose almost all the countries will be on the list.

So an interesting question would be which country you associated the US in the essay to?

The bureaucracy seems to be just a Façade to prevent competition (and consequently innovation).

I'm not an economist but the more and more I read up on the matter following the cracks that showed up after the crisis of '07-'08, the more disillusioned I become.

There was a lot of optimism regarding Bitcoin being a deflationary currency affecting change from outside the system but it's going down the same route. The big players (Conbase/Circle) in this field are just being absorbed by the existing system and will loose their outsider advantage.

myth_buster··on Saudi Arabia, an ISIS That Has Made It
I get this is an emotional response and somewhere 3/4th in, it turns into drivel with Texas women and such. I do believe violence begets more violence. Further I believe the complexity is something akin to the butterfly effect where doing something can cascade into something big in half a century. Take for example the drone strikes. The kids who manage to live through it would have have pent-up animosity towards the west when they hit teenage.

What we are seeing is just the result of some bad foreign policy.

I agree. I found that the best part was that founders went on length answering the questions. The text could be verbatim or it could be how the book is edited.

I usually find interviews annoying as the interviewer interjects a lot, breaking the chain of thought, diverging the discussion or some times cutting them off to inject their own opinions.

This book I thought had none of that. And I learned a lot reading it.

As for PG's essay, I think I came across this exact content some place else (my memory fails me).

myth_buster··on Edward Snowden and spread of encryption blamed after Paris terror attacks
This is expected response if you follow the American media.

There is a very interesting video [0] of Noam Chomsky, after the 9/11 attacks, where he says that any government and regime worth it's salt will use 9/11 as an excuse to push their agenda over the public.

And they will do so using their fear.

myth_buster··on What happens when a culture is driven by the need for money to make more money
I would be curious to know what is the philosophical definition for _absolute poverty_.

Are we doing the best we can for the billions, definitely not. Are we doing the least we could, arguably not.

myth_buster··on What happens when a culture is driven by the need for money to make more money
Evidently, Capitalism needs to be hacked.

_For Profit_ doesn't cut it and is buggy. The side-effects are the waste due to consumerism, unsustainability and potential application crash (climate & earth).

The variables in the model needs to be tweaked so a new system evolves.
