myth_buster··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
Greater Boulder Area, CO.

_If you can survive the winter_

- It's college town with good departments (talks and other activities).

- Decent startup scene

- Some research orgs exist (NCAR/NREL)

- Local incubator

- Options to pursue an active life

He may be a troll but that doesn't discount the point he's addressing that in the absence of subscription model, content will be driven by who pays for it (ie. other than the readers).

Operative word here is _malware_.

Bloomberg reporting was about a hardware hack.

@dang Looks like a bug [0].

The story has been on top of the page for a while now with over 500+ votes. I believe it got merged with a new story that messed up the vote count.

myth_buster··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
Those articles were hitting their spam filter (not sure why reliable news sources won't be whitelisted) which prevented users from posting and deleted posts that were already made.

They may have fixed the "bug" now.

b. IRL, Roommate also gave them their Facebook email and password (for $15/mth)

myth_buster··on How to Tell Us a Secret
Thanks for clarifying. Even with E2E wouldn't you still want the code to be open source or an independent audit done? As I said, not an expert.
myth_buster··on How to Tell Us a Secret

WhatsApp, with more than 1.2 billion active users, is one of the easiest ways to send secure information.
“With WhatsApp, it’s as simple as sending a text message — but it’s encrypted,” Mr. Dance explained.
I'm not a security expert but I think this is not exactly the best practice. This may have been true pre-fb acquisition but there has been changes to how WhatsApp behaves, especially server side storage.

Also the departure of WhatsApp founders under uncertain terms, doesn't give me much confidence with usage of that app for clandestine operations.

Perhaps folks here who are well versed with the state of the app can chime in.

myth_buster··on Ask HN: Why did your startup fail and what did you learn?
Thank you for sharing your story/learnings. I didn't come across your blog initially. These specially resonated with me:

I need a higher level of certainty than investors do because my time is more valuable to me than their money is to them. Investors place bets in a portfolio of companies, but I only have one life.

Listen to what your users say, but believe what they do.

From now on, immediate benefit: sell to the user. Long term benefit: sell to the boss.
myth_buster··on Python in Visual Studio Code
I'm using VSCode for my FE work and love the tooling, integrations and marketplace. Happy with the vim plugin, formatting support and terminal support within the IDE. Not a surprise here coming from Visual Studio. In the past I've considered splurging on JetBrains' Webstorm IDE. Glad I didn't.

Will give it a whirl for the BigData/ML related scripts. Nice to see one IDE being the GoTo for different lines of work.

Having said that, with the latest update (1.26.1), I'm seeing a significant lag in keystrokes. Not sure whether a plugin is the culprit.

myth_buster··on Google AMP – A 70% drop in our conversion rate
> Sometimes the cover-up is more damaging than the crime.

I hate walled gardens. What troubles me more is that something that came from addressing a competitor's product (Fb's Instant Articles in this case) has grown to do more damage than what Instant Articles could have in the first place.

As for the Google Amp URL, they are working on fixing it. https://twitter.com/cramforce/status/950549603975233536

myth_buster··on The Stock Market Is Shrinking
One of the main drivers IMHO, and not mentioned in the article, is quantitative easing or the ZIRP.

Money is cheap and easily available (to select few) which has helped players in private equity to borrow and spend. Consequence of this is that companies can stay private longer as there is more capital available in private funding rounds.

Take for example the case of Uber which has managed to raise $21.7B [0], something that in past would have only resulted from an IPO.

_Edit_

Was off by an order of magnitude on the amount Uber raised.

myth_buster··on People Aren’t Dumb, the World Is Hard
Your assumption _why aren’t they popular among consumer facing companies_ is incorrect. Almost all UX and product development takes into consideration. Ex: gamification, pricing, freemium model etc.
myth_buster··on Ask HN: How did you find your passion?

The belief that interests arrive fully formed and must simply be “found” can lead people to limit their pursuit of new fields and give up when they encounter challenges, according to a new Stanford study.

Mantras like “find your passion” carry hidden implications, the researchers say. They imply that once an interest resonates, pursuing it will be easy. But, the research found that when people encounter inevitable challenges, that mindset makes it more likely people will surrender their newfound interest.

myth_buster··on Ask HN: What is the first thing you implement at a new company?
We have a onboarding wiki page that has everything that's required on your first day to the day you getting your first code to master branch. We hand it to the new joinee and ask them to update it if they find something that wasn't documented. It has gone through so many reviews that in most cases that's all they require for a smooth onboarding.
