mym1990··on LeCun has "zero concerns" about AI wiping out humanity, recent "rogue" incidents
I have not seen the research on CoT and how it impacts spatial reasoning and outcomes, so I can’t comment on that part. I do see continuously that in almost every example of non-trivial image generation and 3d modeling, there are quirks that point to the fact that the model does not understand relationships within the space based on physics.

CoT seems to work really well for text based generation but once you’re past that and into physics models and detailed relationship mapping, it may work better but it’s not enough to make me believe it’s “reasoning” in a way that humans do.

Right, and a modernization can run for as long as 10 years, meaning your budget over the modernization is actually closer to 350 million. The DMV likely just contracts the services to ILSOS and gets billed a ginormous amount in contracting fees.

So you initially say 100k-1 million and then pull a 35 million dollar budget out…seems a little disconnected.

Or it’s just taking common examples from training and applying those copied heuristics to your problem? Doesn’t mean it’s actually reasoning about the space and how to solve the problem. It’s the equivalent of a student writing an answer they saw somewhere else without understanding “why”.

Ooooh man, if you think a DMV site is contracted for 100k-1 million, I have some very, very bad news for you.

Advertisers, for one.
mym1990··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
I didn't even mention anything about AI, so no reason to bring it into this. Lawyers or not, it signals to other companies and society in general that repercussions are at least less severe now, or in some cases non-existent.
mym1990··on Pion, an agent designed to run any company autonomously
Not too hopeful here as we see the major labs continuously break rules and are not held accountable for anything. Accountability in general is on a major decline, in case no one has noticed.
mym1990··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Modern economies are addicted to growth, and asset prices are pinned to showing continued growth more than ever. As soon as any global power proposes to take a beat and re-evaluate the trajectory of innovation, they will be left behind. Global leadership is also effectively non-existent and aside from trade, no one seems to be able to really make inroads on big ticket issues. In a time where we need more collaboration that ever, governments seem to be skewing more nationalistic than ever.

I'm not going to lie, and this is not meant as an insult, but I could not comprehend what a single sentence here is trying to say.

I think there is lots of nuance between theory and application. Some people are really good teachers, and good teachers can give us mental models are abstract enough to get the gist of things.

Roger Federer would say he never knew what kind of grip he used on his shots(which is one of the first things one learns as a beginner), and I think Roger might not be an elite coach, because so much of his greatness may have come from a very intuitive understanding of tennis. (Would I still take him as my coach, heck yeah).

I think some people have really intuitive understanding of their subjects and can express that understanding in amazing applications, but they lack the communication skills, patience, or language to properly pass on the knowledge to others.

mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Drug addicts don't become addicts all of the sudden. Lots of people with no place to go resort to awful things, people that feel like they have no place in society do not see a reason to take care of it. It doesn't make it right, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to address the root cause.
mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I don’t disagree that the problem is difficult and has various surface areas to address, but everyone can’t blame the drug users when even putting up the stall costs north of $500,000. That’s just governmental bureaucracy at play.

Additionally, not all areas of the country are infested with the “homeless and drug addicts”. People can spin that all they like but areas where people take care of their local services are plentiful.

Lastly, don’t talk to me about prohibitive pricing in government initiates. When we stop spending hundreds of billions bombing other countries, then come talk about things being too expensive.

Nice condescending comment about the homework though, you must have been pleased with that one.

mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Go touch grass, you seem a little angry for a forum.
mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Funny how the government is "underfunded", yet can spend billions and trillions on plenty of things.
mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
Yeah, I did this at 16 at a gas station and got paid 8.75 an hour, there are lots of people out there doing this type of work in the private sector. Its not glamorous thats for sure but supply/demand will dictate the labor market. The government doesn't deem it infeasible because hiring is difficult, its because they aren't willing to pay a reasonable wage for the work.
mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
How is maintaining public restrooms a "massive liability"? Surely its an inconvenience but massive liability seems a bit of a hyperbole.
mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
It probably isn't as much about population growth as the increasing wealth gap. My hypothesis would be that a society where people don't feel fair distribution of wealth is more prone to this 'abuse' that you call 'overuse'.
mym1990··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I was in Nice as well and found one place that had a public urinal(my back was literally to people walking around). It was a bit odd...but I really had to go.

We're truly living through the cash grab era. $1400 + a yearly subscription for an extremely vague product that will likely lose support in 2-5 years.
mym1990··on Show HN: Huzzah – a novel approach to coding with AI
Massive, complex codebase…short pseudocode.

The fact that you don’t think this is particularly difficult makes me questions everything after that statement.

Most graduate school students don’t do research and don’t go on to do a PhD though? And what’s wrong with having more researchers?
mym1990··on Being ambitious and being a dad
“All the people I admire most are builders.”

If parenting and building are both truly aspirations, why not have people you admire that are great parents as well? I guess they don’t have many biographies for great moms and dads.

I admire the ambition. I wonder how many people out there are chasing both of these things, thinking they are being great parents and great builders, but are failing at one, or both.

mym1990··on Being ambitious and being a dad
He sure as heck failed at the family thing.
mym1990··on Choosing an AI model: one prompt, 11 models, different results
It amazes me how close minded people have gotten. Do you really have that hard of a time believing there is a use case for a human looking up information on a coffee shop, on the internet? Oh, and god forbid the shop owner actually wants to provide it!
mym1990··on Choosing an AI model: one prompt, 11 models, different results
It sounds like you know everything about the internet and people's preferences, why ask?
mym1990··on Choosing an AI model: one prompt, 11 models, different results
Why does your brain instantly go to "whats the cheapest and easiest way to do things", instead of "whats creative, fun, interactive, usable, accessible, etc...".

This is the reason the world is slowly becoming a boring ass place and the internet basically consists of 3 websites that are all trying to suck your soul dry.

If I ran a business, a website that stands out from the crowd and provides a good experience would be in my top 3 things to do.

mym1990··on Choosing an AI model: one prompt, 11 models, different results
The models are giving you very average, middle of the road responses. The average human gait doesn't have swagger, limps, or extensive accessibility needs. If you want the swagger, you need to steer it that way.

If time is of the essence, or rapid prototyping is needed, the shipping hurdle is a real problem. Going down the street for the goods vs having them go across the globe is quite a difference…
mym1990··on Mini retirements: like a sabbatical, but much smaller
It is astronomically higher for a family, as they said they have. The better way would probably be to go on a spouses plan and swap back and forth that way, but that also is a luxury that most underestimate.

I thought it was pretty cool, its the kind of stuff that I wish there was more of on the internet. I guess some people's imagination runs a little more than others.
