mychael··on Coinbase acquires Earn.com
Nothing to see here. Just another highly connected businessman making a ton of money on a startup exit.
mychael··on Ask HN: Do we need fully decentralized systems?
"Decentralized systems" != Cryptocurrencies.

Email, BitTorrent, Git are all "decentralized systems" and they have nothing to do with finance and do not use blockchain tech.

I realize crypto is hot right now, but lets try to have some perspective.

mychael··on Anne Wojcicki on How to Build the Future
Very uninspiring story.

- Successful parents from NYC that have their own Wikipedia page.

- Worked on Wall Street.

- Educated at Yale.

The list goes on.....

How many people can relate to that much privilege?

mychael··on Show HN: I wanted better offline music on the iPhone, so I made Doppler
I bought the app. A few ideas:

- When importing, it would be great to see that "importing" is not a copy of the exact same data, but rather a reference or link (like a symlink). I have 40 gb of music on my iPhone. I don't want to double that by using your app.

- Needs a nicer looking app logo.

- Needs a cooler app name that is more original than "Doppler".

mychael··on Internal Facebook posts of employees discussing leaked memo
Andrew Bosworth lists himself as a "Co-Inventer of News Feed, Messenger, Groups" on his Twitter bio without any sense of irony or self-awareness.

His software patents are about as innovative as a peanut-butter jelly sandwich.

mychael··on How we interview engineers at CircleCI
The fact that they use a pseudo scientific "Gender Decoder" is a red flag. It leads me to think Circle CI has unfair prejudices against men and masculinity in general.

By the way, "Objectives" and "driven" are neither feminine or masculine, they're just words. Can you imagine if every word in the Oxford English Dictionary had a gender classification?

mychael··on Airborn: Create and edit files online, securely
Nice idea, but the design of this leaves a lot to be desired.
mychael··on FTC Probing Facebook for Use of Personal Data, Source Says
Facebook is a net negative force in our society. Particularly for the startup ecosystem.
mychael··on My Python Development Environment, 2018 Edition
This seems more like the 2008 Edition. You have to be pretty stubborn to not adopt Docker in 2018.
mychael··on Ask HN: What has HN given you?
Hacker News reminds me that there are lots of people much smarter I am.
mychael··on Her Various Symptoms Seemed Unrelated, Then One Doctor Put It All Together
Haha
mychael··on Her Various Symptoms Seemed Unrelated, Then One Doctor Put It All Together
Agree 100%. I never claimed it would be easy, just that software could help.
mychael··on Her Various Symptoms Seemed Unrelated, Then One Doctor Put It All Together
I have zero medical expertise, but it sounds like this situation could be improved with software. Given a database that contains an exhaustive list of every illness and symptoms:

    illness symptom diagnosis_symptom_set
    ------- ------- ----------------------
    id id id
    name         name        symptom_id (FK->symptom.id)
                             illness_id (FK->illness.id)

    (Pseudo SQL)

    SELECT diagnosis.name as name
    FROM diagnosis_symptom_set diagnosis_sympt
    JOIN illness diagnosis ON diagnosis_sympt.illness_id = diagnosis.id
    WHERE symptom.name in (hives, chills, weight-loss, .....)

This will at least give a patient awareness of what has been tried/tested and what remains, possibly saving them months or years.
mychael··on What I wish I knew when I became CTO
Why are so many self-appointed startup CTOs so anxious to share startup advice?
mychael··on The rise and fall of 18F
I would support a privatized version of 18F. One we could measure impact of better and terminate more easily.
mychael··on US startups don’t want to go public anymore
Interesting. Thanks for sharing!
mychael··on US startups don’t want to go public anymore
Startup mergers and acquisitions are also trending downward. Translation for tech employees:

- If you accepted a lower salary in exchange for equity, you most likely got a bad deal.

- If you worked somewhere long enough to vest 100% of your options, you're probably underpaid (because people who hop around tend to earn more).

mychael··on Bryan Ferry on how Roxy Music invented art pop: 'We were game for anything'
If you've never heard of Roxy Music or Bryan Ferry, I suggest starting with Roxy Music's For Your Pleasure and Bryan Ferry's Boys and Girls. Timeless records.
mychael··on People leave managers, not companies
There is an important distinction that hasn't been discussed much:

- The reason people decide to resign.

- The reason people begin to consider resigning.

In my experience, bad management is what usually kicks off the whole thought process, but other factors are what cement the decision (like an offer with higher pay, better title, higher prestige company etc.)

mychael··on Leap: An Online Community for Women
Can someone help me understand how this site is not sexist and discriminatory against men?
mychael··on Predictions for 2018 from Rob Zuber, CTO of CircleCI
Circle CI is a great product, but the new v2 YAML format is very clunky and leads to slower build times. I wish they would focus on their product rather than predicting tech trends.
mychael··on DOJ: We Want Martin Shkreli’s Enigma Machine, Wu-Tang Album, and $7.3M
Yesterday's Kate Steinle article got flagged, but this article on Martin Shkreli's Wu Tang record did not. Wow.
mychael··on I'm on the FCC. Please stop us from killing net neutrality
For ~20 years the internet somehow functioned well without title ii regulations. So yes, I agree with you that "Internet from the beginning treated all traffic the same" and "During those times Internet was neutral and all sites were treated the same". Ajit Pai's proposal seeks to roll back these relatively new title 2 regulations.

> I can't believe anyone would be ok with giving power to companies (ones that have monopoly and consumer don't even have choice to vote with their wallets) what sites we are allowed to see or not.

Likewise, I can't see why anyone would give more power to government (especially those who don't support the current government) to decide what is "fair" and "neutral".

mychael··on I'm on the FCC. Please stop us from killing net neutrality
I used to support net neutrality. Then I did my homework on the issue and realized so many of the arguments in favor of net neutrality rely on fear-mongering and a false history of the internet.
mychael··on How Politics and Bad Decisions Starved New York’s Subways
The MTA is a government mandated monopoly. What they need is free enterprise.
mychael··on Firefox 57.0 Released
I write software for the web so speed is secondary. I want to know: Does the inspector have better/more features than Chrome's Inspector? Does it have Redux and React Toolbars that are better than the Chrome ones?
mychael··on I have no side code projects to show you
I like to work with engineers who are passionate about software not someone looking for a 9-5 job – so I would pass on him as a candidate.

In my experience people who are passionate about software have something to show for it, even something small.

mychael··on Ask HN: What is the best way to spend my time as a 17-year-old who can code?
Close your laptop. Go outside. Listen to live music. Make friends in your community. Travel abroad. Fall in love.

You're already on a great trajectory - so at worst you'll earn a 6 figure salary and at best you will be the next zillionaire startup founder. Don't waste your youth on HackerNews and Github.

mychael··on Criticizing Google got me fired
> If you didn't know it already, think tanks are a euphemism for propaganda machine.

I'm not sure if this is hyperbole or if you don't actually know what propaganda means. Propaganda refers to media/communication that influences a large group of people (citizens in the context of politics or employees in the context of business).

Most think tanks (aei, cato, brookings etc) publish research for an academic and legislative audience, not for the masses to consume.

mychael··on We Live in Fear of the Online Mobs
Someone should let the members of these mobs know that they are not actually liberal or progressive. For example, they appear to prefer mob justice instead of due process; ideological blacklists instead of tolerance; and censorship instead of freedom of expression. The bedrock principles of a liberal society appear to be missing from their world view.
