mxfh··on Astrophotographer snaps skydiver falling in front of the sun
The overlapping pattern is! the flight pattern. The overlap is not some calibration artifact, it is the product for any sort of stereo evaluation.
mxfh··on Steam Machine
Because think they need to be backward compatible with decade old peripheral controllers. People tend to get grumpy about this. Yet nobody flinched when XBox ditched KinectV2 with Series S/X.

For PC's people are used to adapters. And USB-C is superior in every way.

A self declared general compute device should have a least two USB-C outs that can drive displays.

For 2026 (12 years into USB-C spec) I would expect a minimum of 2 3.2 capable fully wired USB-C ports.

Even better something newer that could do near 40GBpS or better. Like USB Gen 3×2

(Written on usb keyboard connected to 4k monitor that also charges the MBP it's plugged in)

mxfh··on This map is not upside down
Yeah, viewer up maps need be updated.

It just needs to me moved not rotated if it's horizontal though, those are not so uncommon either as physical/tactile minature models or maps on podestals, tables or on the floor even in europe.

Einnorden used to be quite a thing with paper maps in the field.

The term Orientation even goes back further referencing to the era of T and O maps in occidental Europe where east was up and where the sun rises and also of significance to Christianity https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T_and_O_map

Then again nobody seems to notice the Manhattan grid is actually not north up.

mxfh··on Wind turbine blade transportation challenges
The desireable thing here is that they can fly, not that it's optimal.

also you could just drive, lol this thing:

https://mitxela.com/projects/turbine_transport_transformer

the bigger questing is anyway where this could safely land and start, when it's of no need for sea transport to begin with.

Same question remains for that plane. How to do the last miles from the airport. If the route is long enough you can usually find an autobahn and a river wide enough to get 100m blades around.

There seem little use for planes in that size class that doesn't add costs.

mxfh··on Wind turbine blade transportation challenges
The carrier host fuselage would need huge controls surfaces anyways, could just use them as normal wings when flying for itself with way less drag.

Or just do self mounting Multicopter using the big wing as lift surface for the long haul.

They already use propellers for mounting anyway, its wild out there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1gUm_W1z28

mxfh··on Wind turbine blade transportation challenges
That diagram is just weird.

At that stage just build symmetrical sets of turbines and fly them wings out in pairs mounted to some host fuselage with wing mounts. Also that's how ornithopters got invented.

Overall some serious Cargolifter vibes.

mxfh··on “No Tax on Tips” Includes Digital Creators, Too
That's anectdotal. There is literally zero alignment or correlation between tipping and good service.

You want to have a stress free experience the waiters tries to upsell you at every corner.

If you mistake upselling for attention then you're part of the tipping complex already.

Good service comes from good training and experience not the assumed money left over in your wallet. That's the businesses goal of not leaving any money on the table. So the alignment is between the business owner and the employee if anything, not between employee and customer.

I would make an exception for bars, but that's about it.

mxfh··on Creative Technology: The Sound Blaster
late 90s is a whole different thing than mid 90s. The 97 in AC'97 is there for a reason. Would still say that Audigy 2001 front panel was peak consumer audio experience. Good access for headphone out and ASIO support, so for anyone wnating to connect you a midi keyboard for first excursion into digital music creation everything was there for a reasonable price point. Even firewire for your DV imports. A digital media entry point like no others existed at the time at that price point.

mxfh··on VibeVoice: A Frontier Open-Source Text-to-Speech Model
Vibe coding just became a term this spring. I doubt that that the substantial part, like giving it a project code name and getting company approval of this research project started after that. It's not libe vibe has a negative connotation in general yet.
mxfh··on Show HN: I was curious about spherical helix, ended up making this visualization
Except the helix curve shown in OP is NOT a loxodrome or rhumb line.

It has equal spacing on the surface between lines, a loxodrome can't have that property since by definition it must cross the meridians at the same angle at all times. That means it always gets denser near the poles.

---

Start with the curve:

x = 10 · cos(π·t/2) · sin(0.02·π·t)

y = 10 · sin(π·t/2) · sin(0.02·π·t)

z = 10 · cos(0.02·π·t)

Convert to spherical coordinates (radius R=10):

λ(t) = π/2 · t (longitude)

φ(t) = π/2 - 0.02·π·t (latitude)

Compute derivative d(λ)/d(φ):

d(λ)/dt = π/2

d(φ)/dt = -0.02·π

d(λ)/d(φ) = (π/2)/(-0.02·π) = -25 (constant)

A true rhumb line must satisfy:

d(λ)/d(φ) = tan(α) · sec(φ)

which depends on latitude φ.

Since φ(t) changes, sec(φ) changes, so no fixed α can satisfy this.

Conclusion: the curve is not a rhumb line.

this is how one should look for varying intersection angles:

mxfh··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
Storage isn't free. running a 50 Watt anything 24/7 costs like 10 Dollars a month in Europe already if you don't want to be an anti-social leacher or want the convenience of an netflix-like media server.
mxfh··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
That's not how streaming worked, ever. You had to deal with what Netflix had to offer and that was it. These were the happy monopoly days. It was simply the lack of choice and nobody felt left out at watercooler talks.

The paradox now, is that if you're FOMO inclined you feel the need to subscribe to multiple ones at all times to satify all needs in a household. You don't have to. You can keep baseline Disney if you really have to, but everything else can be easily rotated or just cought up on for a month or three on the usual discounted offers. The social pressure was not some invention of the streaming companies.

Also pirating has a hardware and energy cost, that's not trivial and mostly subsidized by parents. On a ROI basis of adults with disposable income "buying" (aka personal licenses, ideally shareable with some other accounts what some might call a family) 4-5 movies for like 5 dollars on platforms like Apple TV each a month is actually cheaper than pirating. Streaming is not everything. And don`t kid yourself that your DVD or Bluray collection is worth something or usable in 20+ years. That's a niche hobby. Go visit a flea market. People are that lazy when it comes to couch and home entertainment stuff.

mxfh··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
What's the problem with that exactly? Legacy catalogs having some incomplete coverage? That the Pokemon Company can't make a good list if pressed? These are all not new or streaming Problems

The gist is here, that the complete first four season are on YouTube for free and the 5th is being added as we speak? (200+ episodes)

https://www.youtube.com/@OfficialPoke%CC%81monTV/playlists

There was nether the expectation with streaming that third party content doesn't rotate.

If you want a bit more persistent access you can buy them on Apple TV (Season 1-5 and 10-25)

Oh Boy, Pokemon is really not the example I would bring up here, when the aim is completeness on official channels:

mxfh··on Show HN: I spent 6 years building a ridiculous wooden pixel display
I guess the patents are long expired now and don't really apply to pixels, but that concept exists already for non-pixelated images and sadly these are replaced mostly by LEDs now in the wild:

https://www.rotapanel.com/trivision-mechanism-and-prism-type...

mxfh··on Show HN: I spent 6 years building a ridiculous wooden pixel display
If you're willing to sacrifice a color just use triangles/prisms the faces could then just be virtually adjacent and still rotate independently

mxfh··on Perfecting anti-aliasing on signed distance functions
That what I wondering, for sharp narrow corners like with that pac-man mouth center and in font rendering composite/multichannel is probably the better approach for any situation where the there is potential for self-intersection of the distance field in concave situations. https://lambdacube3d.wordpress.com/2014/11/12/playing-around...
mxfh··on Perfecting anti-aliasing on signed distance functions
That Pac-Man “mouth” is collapsing to a constant width line like halfway in for the last for examples for me.

Having some weird mid-length discontinuity in the edge direction for me. Not just perceptually.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here or have a different idea what the goal of that exercise is, but I would expect some pixels to turn near white near the center towards that gap sector.

mxfh··on Perfecting anti-aliasing on signed distance functions
The minute black area on the inner part of the sector getting perceptually boosted with the same ramp width like the outer area is effectively how an outline on a shape would behave, not two shapes with no stroke width. I would expect the output brightness should scale with the volume/depth under a pixel in the 3d visualization.

Is this intentional? To me this is an opiniated (aka artistic preference) feature preserving method not the perfect one.

Btw the common visualization has a source and an author:

mxfh··on How was the Universal Pictures 1936 opening logo created?
It's quite a hybrid would count this a in-camera, not pure practical. not to this discount this but to encourage mixing media. Lots of projection mapping going on which is pretty much capturing a digital screen on other surfaces.

Related case in the Netherlands: if you just think all dual citizens are up for no good as the pretext a lot of law abiding people's lifes will just get upended.

If legislation, jurisdiction and law enforcement forget about basic principles and human rights in favour of looking productive, collateral damage is pretty much more or less expected.

mxfh··on Blind to Disruption – The CEOs Who Missed the Future
The historical part completely misses the first boom of EV from 1890s to 1910s besides mentioning that they existed.

The history of those is the big untold story here.

It doesn't help if you're betting on the right tech too early.

Clearly superior in theory, but lacking significant breakthroughs in battery reasearch and general spottyness of electrification in that era.

Tons of Electric Vehicle companies existed to promote that comparably tech.

Instead the handful of combustion engine companies drove everyone else out of the market eventually, not last gasoline was marketed as more manly.

mxfh··on Stop Killing Games
Quite a few EU national libraries have legal desposits of cultural works extended to video games. It's not that far fetched for them to expect that their copies should be working. For ephemeral GaaS the libraries could require a video of a reference playthrough for any new game mode, if they don't want to leave it all inconsistent and spotty twitch and letplay youtube coverage.

Requiring GaaS Server binaries to made public is a bridge too far here to me, if the game is kept running with a minimum of two years after announcing EOL and shutting down purchases in shops after that. It should be encouraged, but mandatory? Playability is not everything if the experience is not reproducable to begin with.

mxfh··on 1945 TV Console Showed Two Programs at Once
That was not just Sony SimulView, the whole late stage of the 100/120 Hz 3D-TV hype lived on that promise before everything went back to 60hz for another 5 years.

Had an LG that even came with those light passive polarizers tech Dual Play glasses that were never used.

Ultimately that novelty came probably too early to mature to acceptable results on 1080p sources and edge-lit LED 1080p panels of that era, if it was ever meant to be.

Might be wortwhile to reintroduce them on 4k with sunlight challenging mini-LEDs as a differentiator vs less brighter OLEDs for more than acceptable results at 3840x1080 and consoles being able to push out that kind of resolution.

Currently console support for splitscreen multiplayer seems to be a dying art over the last decade. But you could still multiplex 2 sources into the same screen though.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nzn9g3eMydo

Then again there is no replacement for Kinect-like tech either either in current consumer market offerings, I would still take that over most VR experiences in terms of setup/social friction and local/couch coop.

mxfh··on The $25k car is going extinct?
Just because they are not heavily advertised, doesnt mean they don't exist.

Dacia Sandero/Duster/Spring exist. (Renault)

Citroen C1, Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 108, (VW up!.)

Considering Volkswagen Group:

With a choice of Skoda Fabia/Seat Ibiza/VW Polo you would go for Skoda or Seat, not the VW brand itself if you dont care about marque but price.

But prestige is a huge factor still, so people would still go for an overpriced Golf for no apparent other reason

Also 20k-equivalent from 2015-2019 is already above 25k just by inflation. Car manufactures have strong unions so that stuff comes around fast.

So you simply can't expect the old sub 20k cars anymore, that's 25k now.
