mwilcox··on The Fastest Growing Areas of Startup Investment in 2015
I'd be interested where you're getting your numbers - there was a popular article floating aroudn a couple of days ago about VC capital invested into Bitcoin already passing the 2014 total: http://cointelegraph.com/news/114862/bitcoin-capital-investm...

189m seems low considering 21, inc. alone raised over $110m.

mwilcox··on I spent the last 15 years trying to become an American and failed
I graduated in Auckland 2 years ago and had assumed I would have to leave the country to find interesting work. Stumbled into the startup community and now I'm completely addicted, yet don't see myself needing to leave the country any time soon. And I'm not even working out of a main center.
mwilcox··on Magic Leap Announces Its Augmented Reality Developer Platform
This is the patent: https://www.google.co.nz/patents/US8950867

Abstract: A system may comprise a selectively transparent projection device for projecting an image toward an eye of a viewer from a projection device position in space relative to the eye of the viewer, the projection device being capable of assuming a substantially transparent state when no image is projected; an occlusion mask device coupled to the projection device and configured to selectively block light traveling toward the eye from one or more positions opposite of the projection device from the eye of the viewer in an occluding pattern correlated with the image projected by the projection device; and a zone plate diffraction patterning device interposed between the eye of the viewer and the projection device and configured to cause light from the projection device to pass through a diffraction pattern having a selectable geometry as it travels to the eye.

I'm not really understanding what the announcement is here. They've had a Developers section on their site for almost 6 months?

mwilcox··on Magic Leap Announces Its Augmented Reality Developer Platform
Magic Leap are promising MUCH more - realistic occlusion of virtual objects by real ones, dynamic transparency (allowing both AR and fully immersive VR), natural depth of field (refocusing on virtual objects without simulated blur), a scanning fiber light-field display, fully accurate hand tracking, both very near (holding something in your hand) and far (things flying through streets) depth tracking.. you get it. Not to mention, they haven't even said anything about their cloud platform yet, which you can bet Google are heavily involved with.. combining Tango area mapping with Google Maps.. they are trying to solve every problem in AR/Computer Vision, so it's no wonder people are skeptical. But if anyone's going to succeed, they have a pretty impressive team & investor lineup.

Not to mention, Magic Leap are trying to build a whole ecosystem designed for AR experiences, right down to retails stores. Whereas Microsoft simply seem to be making 'Windows-AR'.

mwilcox··on The wow of water rendering
The sand looks like simple geometry at the moment, I imagine it could be (relatively) easily implemented as a second particle type as part of the same simulation. The granularity of sand makes it pretty similar to liquid, it would just need adjusted properties (weight, friction, appearance)

With all these different ways of doing it, we're going to need some sort of syndication. It would need to be really simple though.
mwilcox··on Google May Lead $500M Round in Magic Leap Virtual Reality Tech
They already raised $50mil Series A in February, it doesn't seem that unrealistic. Remember, a typical film budget for these guys easily breaks into the hundreds of millions.

Light field displays literally show a different image to one part of your retina than another. It is not incorrect to explain that technologies like the rift are 'flat', as, while they may show two images, they are simply flat images on a display. Light field tech combines an array of images that recreates the way light works in reality.

Light field displays are to the Rift like the Rift is to a 3DTV.

mwilcox··on The Future of Virtual Reality
The thing that gets people is that, as backers of the Kickstarter / customers of the developer kit, you ARE an investor. Sure - not an investor in the sense that you own a piece of the company. But you are investing your time and money into the potential consumer success of the product, by buying the hardware and developing a game for that. You are right to feel betrayed, it you feel this disrupts the potential consumer success.

mwilcox··on Kim Dotcom: The Man Behind Mega [video]
Oh, I'm well aware that's their intention, it's really saying more about Dropbox and the like. It's still cloud storage so I wouldn't store anything incredibly sensitive on there, and you do need to install the browser plugin for the security not to be completely laughable, but it's still a lot more usable than TrueCrypt for day-to-day stuff imo.
mwilcox··on Kim Dotcom: The Man Behind Mega [video]
The only thing that's stopping me from completely switching over from Dropbox (I use Google Drive a bit too, but mainly for Docs) is the lack of a Sync client. They're beta testing it at the moment, but its still a little buggy and time limited. Apart from that though, it's a fantastic service. The web app is speedy, download times are great, and with the encryption I'm a lot more comfortable storing private docs than I would be on Dropbox.

The Android app does photo backup too, which is one of the main things I currently use Dropbox for.

mwilcox··on Feedly is Now Hijacking Shared Links And Cutting Out Original Publishers
They should be tackling monetisation for publishers, microtransactions, spotify-style royalties, etc. There's a lot of room for innovation in the RSS market, but being arrogant and squeezing as much as you can out of free content doesn't help anyone in the long run.
