mwilcox··on Reasons Why Job Seekers Are Not Given Feedback
VC funded companies are often the worst when it comes to hiring because they are overcapitalised yet time sensitive - employees are more like contractors when they're brought on to address a short term issue without any real guarantee over a longer term than 18 months
mwilcox··on Small Projects, Big Companies
I don't think you could come up with a better critique of the problems with silicon valley today than "this product wouldn’t have billions of users, but you could charge the elite few quite a bit for using it."
mwilcox··on EHTML: Front-end development can and should be simple
I get the idea but technically this is just making HTML more complicated.
mwilcox··on The Birth of Legacy Software – How Change Aversion Feeds on Itself
I think the best thing to do is use the existing system as a really, extremely detailed interactive requirements doc for a complete rewrite with modern practices and good documentation, then run both in production until you can switch the old one off

mwilcox··on Towards a unified theory of reactive UI
Is it really complete if it ends with "-> GPU"?
mwilcox··on Local-first software: you own your data, in spite of the cloud
Even in the situation I described, the original company would leave the free / client side version on the site as free marketing. This is the standard today for enterprise-monetised open source software.

Solving this problem isn't about being local-first. It's about being local-last. You have to be able to make more money by selling a software license than you make by selling equity and chasing user acquisition and retention.

Then we'll see people waking up to the fact that all this proprietary data is a liability and subscriptions are golden handcuffs and people will finally get back to making real software again

mwilcox··on Local-first software: you own your data, in spite of the cloud
any marginally successful "local-first" app is going to go and raise $10m in vc, switch to software as a service, and add an enterprise mode that requires user permissions and data access to be managed on the server
mwilcox··on We Need to Dream Bigger Than Bike Lanes
The entire debacle with the city council wanting to spend years "reimagining what the city could be" instead of getting back to work building new infrastructure immediately is why Christchurch has taken so long to come back to life.

mwilcox··on How Virginia Won Amazon's HQ2
I think "HQ" is an intentionally overloaded term, and what will eventually happen is that Amazon will build something in most of these locations, constantly fighting against ballooning budgets typical with massive infrastructure projects
mwilcox··on Slack will never replace email
Slack would do well to introduce a bash client if only for the purpose of ui design research
mwilcox··on The Ecological Limits of Work [pdf]
Well, you still need to consume, eat, house yourself etc. Any situation where you're not paying for that without a productive output is one where you're increasing the ratio of consumption to production. Of course not all work is productive, but solving inefficiencies is _work_ not leisure
mwilcox··on The Ecological Limits of Work [pdf]
You don't drive to the mountain when you go for a hike or wear shoes when you go running?
mwilcox··on The Ecological Limits of Work [pdf]
This makes no sense. Moving emphasis from Production (work) to Consumption (leisure) increases carbon usage, and halts progress towards more sustainable technologies and conservative behaviours. Climate progress takes effort not entertainment.
mwilcox··on Distributism
It's about distributed _ownership_ not necessarily physical distribution
mwilcox··on The Phone That’s Failing Apple: iPhone XR
The price increase and subsequent quality increase of the X made the purchase make sense given that it would be a longer-lasting phone.. on the 3-4 year timeframe rather than a 1-2 year timeframe. If they didn't refresh the X (kept the name) and just released the larger and cheaper versions, it would have made sense. Given the diminishing returns and higher prices, they should put more time in to make sure they have breakthrough releases. Even Jobs did this with the tick-tock of the 4/4S. The naming scheme is all messed up
mwilcox··on The Phone That’s Failing Apple: iPhone XR
He was promoted to handle all design including software. He was best focusing intensely on industrial design for hero products, under Jobs

mwilcox··on Nothing Is Cheaper Than Proof of Work (2015)
You hit the nail on the head but it's in contradiction with your point. Proof of work frees us from the burdens associated with protecting ourselves so that we can perform creative functions. Clearly a GPU, as a general purpose chip, is not well spent performing proof of work over something that amplifies one's creativity. But pow with asics, which couldn't have been used for that purpose, certainly helps. You could argue both are wasteful -- but an investment in security is an investment in creativity by providing a safe environment
