mvitorino··on VibeThinker: 3B param model that beats Opus 4.5 on reasoning with novel SFT+GRPO
Really enjoying seeing these really capable SMLs. Note that on HF they state: "This model was not trained on tool-calling or agent-based programming data. We therefore do not recommend using it for tasks that involve function calling, API orchestration, or autonomous coding agents." - https://huggingface.co/WeiboAI/VibeThinker-3B So we can't just hook it up to a coding harness like pi.dev or something.
mvitorino··on Show HN: Stop playing my matchstick puzzles, start building your own in seconds
This is very addictive! Love it.
mvitorino··on The "email is authentication" pattern
Accidentally burning money is a very low probably event. Forgetting passwords or any type of memorized secret is the most likely default outcome, and chance only increases with time passing.
mvitorino··on Build your next app with a graph database
"Why you should build your next app with a graph database"

Please don't. Graph databases have only a few niche use cases which, even then, in most occasions, can be adequately covered by a relational database.

mvitorino··on FastSpark: A New Fast Native Implementation of Spark from Scratch
How would you efficiently keep continuously updated complex metrics (aggregations, windowed functions, etc) calculated on top of unbounded/streaming data using a database? I'm not saying that Spark is the ideal solution, but there are a set of problems that require tools such as Spark.
mvitorino··on It’s Okay to Store Data in Apache Kafka (2017)
IMO using Kafka for long term storage is not the greatest idea. It is expensive to keep CPU and RAM constantly on top of data that it going to be cold most of the time. There is no DML which means mistakes are expensive (from an engineering pov). And while the whole event sourcing paradigm can work quite well in narrow domains with teams fully aware of the implications of what they are doing, in practice, on large orgs, it is hard to scale (from a people perspective).
mvitorino··on In an Era of ‘Smart’ Things, Sometimes Dumb Stuff Is Better
I believe it needs to be a 10ms tick.
mvitorino··on Serverless Aurora
I wasn't aware. Thanks.
mvitorino··on Serverless Aurora
Google Cloud Datastore?
mvitorino··on Catalan parliament declares independence from Spain
You are right, I oversimplified it in my comment. People could still trade using euros. But I guess the only way to get more currency in the country would be via foreign trade. Banks would not have access to EU QE, deposit guarantees might be no longer valid and the state could no longer print currency to replace old ones.
mvitorino··on Catalan parliament declares independence from Spain
I'm sure they would, but once they are independent, they can't legally use the Euro. Would they even continue to be Spanish citizens and be able to travel freely in the Schengen area? A new state takes years to join the EU (assuming the EU would accept). How about sovereign debt?

All these (really important) issues that should be part of an extensive debate so that people could understand better what is expecting them on the other side.

Also, I don't know any country that allows constitutional changes to be done via a simple majority in parliament (they had 3 votes above simple majority).

The only reasonable exit at this point, I believe, is to have new elections.

mvitorino··on Catalan parliament declares independence from Spain
What does this even mean: "declared independence"?

Have they ordered borders to be closed? Bank accounts to be frozen until new currency is introduced? Have people started throwing their Spanish passports and their euros into the trash?

It just sounds like a lot like pure political manoeuvre without any kind of practical consequence.

mvitorino··on Show HN: Screen.rip – API for capturing web screenshots
I use LICEcap: https://www.cockos.com/licecap/.
mvitorino··on MoviePass wants to let you go to the theater once a day for $10 a month
We have an interesting offer in Portugal. If your cable+internet+phone+mobile company is www.nos.pt you get a card that offers you 2 for 1 tickets at their cinemas. If you go alone, you pay full ticket, but you get a popcorn and drink menu for free. Max 1 per day, 8 per month, 52 per year. Each ticket is around 7USD.
mvitorino··on TypeScripts Type System Is Turing Complete
The -Type System- is turing complete, not talking about the language itself. So your first few comparisons are not quite fair.
mvitorino··on Google DeepMind's first deal with the NHS was illegal, UK data regulator rules
> Punitive punishment does nothing to stop bad practice from happening

That is highly questionable.

mvitorino··on Google DeepMind's first deal with the NHS was illegal, UK data regulator rules
While I agree with you, there is always the option of firing people responsible for the decisions.
mvitorino··on Websites offering pirated papers are shaking up science
This. A lot of long term research worldwide is publicly funded and the status quo of the scientific journals (that once had their place in a world with high communication barriers and costs) needs to be seriously shaken up. That plus the huge business around scientific conferences with most speakers having to pay to be able to present their findings.

But I guess the whole model in the scientific community might need rethinking. Most people are only worried publishing because that is the only measure that matters at the moment...

mvitorino··on Pop-up bike lanes show that demand exists
That hypothesis does not seem to apply to Lisbon, Portugal so far. We have now around 60km of dedicated bicycle paths in Lisbon (not just cycle lanes, but actual separated paths) all built in recent years (and plans to double that very soon).

But, simply put, they are barely used.

A few things are different in Lisbon from a lot of Northern Europe cities: it's very hilly and windy, it has temperatures close to 40 degrees in the summer (we have AC throughout the tube network) and in the winter, when it rains it really pours (not that drizzle that you get in London for example).

I may be too early to call it, but not all cities are alike and many people here are very skeptic about whether general adoption will ever be reached.

mvitorino··on gRPC-Web: Moving past REST+JSON towards type-safe Web APIs
Interesting! When I first looked at gRPC I missed the option(google.api.http). Are you aware of the reason why REST mapped gRPC is not possible in GAE (http 1 only on the server end of our code)?
mvitorino··on gRPC-Web: Moving past REST+JSON towards type-safe Web APIs
I think I like gRPC, but have several reservations regarding replacing REST with it. REST web services often return multiple mime formats, not just pure structured data. Some services return images, others return HTML, and then you also have cache... Maybe I just don't know enough about gRPC, but I can already imagine many people passing images around as byte arrays inside protocol buffers and when we look back, we have reinvented SOAP, which reinvented Corba.
mvitorino··on PhantomJS: Stepping down as maintainer
Server side automation of multiple kinds (not just tests): screenshots, advanced crawlers, etc.
mvitorino··on Google Cloud SQL for Postgres
Yes! We have been asking for this for a while now when asked for feedback about what we would value. Managed ElasticSearch is next on our wishlist.
mvitorino··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
I tend to agree with you in that case. Was not aware of your historical claims. Interesting to know.
mvitorino··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
Yup, I just looked up "dumbass" and it's not nice. Way to go in trying to keep the discussion civil.

If you were paying attention, you would see I never said I was against welfare. Only that you can't have a decent debate on this subject and completely ignore it.

mvitorino··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
That is a straw man argument. Saying that a lot more money is spent elsewhere does not refute the potential effects of welfare.

Also claiming that tax reduction is a form of welfare if very disingenuous since basically that would mean the State would be entitled to take all of your profit by default... meaning any amount of profit allowed would be welfare.

mvitorino··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
I'm not claiming that welfare is what it should be attributed to. Just saying that I think it should be part of the debate anytime anyone looks into these social issues like the article above does.
mvitorino··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
Absolutely. For a country referred to as "the land of the free" you surely have a lot of "sensitive topics". As soon as I posted my comment, I started getting down-voted. I believe the post was quite factual, not offensive in any way or prejudicial, so I can only imagine it was affecting someone's sensitivity.
mvitorino··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
I find it odd that the article manages to completely ignore/miss the effect of welfare and the change in incentives it may result in. Also, it appears that statistically, single mothers are much more likely to vote Left than Right.

In the sci-fi movie Advantageous, a future society with a lot more automation, has high unemployment rates. Recruitment (which in the movie is mostly done by AI) eventually evolves to a consensus whereby most jobs are assigned to men because otherwise society would become a lot more dangerous to everyone.

mvitorino··on What fossil fuels are doing to our oceans
Because politicians choose the spend the money elsewhere since, so far, it doesn't give enough votes.
