mustang-med··on Fraud, so much fraud
My career has been in this space (medical research, not neuroscience) and I honestly cannot fathom how this happened. I don't understand how a researcher can wake up one day, manipulate data, and then show it to others. I feel bad for everyone's time that was wasted in building off this research, likely other's careers were chartered based on the basis of this research. What a shame.

This is the crap that makes california stink. After 30+ years, I moved my wife and kids out of SF Bay Area, and I was telling my wife exactly this morning, how surreal of a feeling it is to not think about crime in a new england state. When I would drive around the bay area, I would think about the most recent freeway shooting, or the increase in home invasions in the affluent east bay suburbs, etc. After living in the north east for 6 months, it's such a liberating feeling not watching you back all the time because of crack-pot DAs that allow criminals to loot & kill and not get prosecuted (Pamela Price). I couldn't care less for the op-ed above, and california needs to stop being so liberal, it's ridiculous.
mustang-med··on Study finds juvenile dolphins who play together are more successful as adults
I'm certain this is the case with humans as well.

Growing up, I had a tight-knit group of four friends in a lower middle-class townhouse community. I think the enthusiasm we all brought to our childhood and embracing our diversity (all four of us were completely different races) helped us all excel as adults. It's been 15-20 years since college, but I remember how socially underdeveloped many of my peers were. Almost two decades since then, it's not a surprise to anyone that the more socially and emotionally in-tune people climb their industries faster.

mustang-med··on Google releases smart watch for kids
My partner's team works across all of Google's products (e.g., Cloud, Geo, not Verily or Waymo) and is part of the green light process for those launches. I don't want to get into more specifics than that, but let's say a product is not growing year-over-year as expected. This is one of the teams involved.
mustang-med··on Google releases smart watch for kids
My partner is on one of the teams responsible for red tape and cost-cutting at Alphabet. After having frequent conversations about past failed projects, I'm surprised this project got the green light. Personally, I don't see this product taking off. As a parent, I think it looks quite lame, and I don't think anyone at Google knows how to break into product areas for kids. I've seen quite a few headlines concerned about Nvidia being the next Cisco, but as someone who has had family at both Cisco and Google over the last 30 years, I really think Alphabet is more likely to become the next Cisco, where middle-aged engineers go to work for 30 hours a week to keep the internet's backbone afloat.
mustang-med··on Show HN: HackerNews but for research papers
I'm a career scientist and here's why I suspect this won't take off:

(1) A lot of research is trash and not reproducible. Over the last 5 years I've found it's usually not even worth my time to read half the papers I read unless its in Nature or a top journal. Even then the ROI is minimal.

(2) It takes quite a bit of knowledge to appreciate and read a paper. In grad school, it took 4-6 hours of work to go through a paper. Do I really want to have a discussion on the 10,000 ft view of a paper? Probably not. Do I want to spend 4-6 hours really appreciating the nuances of a valid paper? Probably not.

(3) As alluded to by (1) and (2), most researchers (at least in my anecdotal experience) are spread so incredibly thin, as someone who would want to provide insight on some incredibly niche topic, I am already overbooked for my time between work and outside responsibilities.

I think you're going to find that the garden you're trying to grow doesn't have the adequate catalyst/buy-in. You might be better off creating a version where the paper is summarized by a GPT model and that 10,000 ft summary is discussed by the general public.

mustang-med··on [dead]
I couldn't disagree with this more, and I am quite disappointed that this has made the front page of HN. If you're any person of color (brown, black), you're not treated very well in Japan. I've had at least six friends go there over the last two decades to find this out. Actually, Japan is where dreams go to die. New grads join one company after graduating college and have to stay with it for decades. A few years ago, their medical education system was implicated in changing answers for high-scoring female students so they wouldn't attain a seat. Anecdotally, all of my wife's friends who have transferred to Google Japan have seen their careers stagnate, and they have had to return to Silicon Valley. Finally, because of the 'Lost Decade,' the country was in a recession from 1991 to 2010..while they might have xenophobia on the menu, they have more pressing issues to address to become an actual functioning and healthy democracy
mustang-med··on Does the American Diabetes Association work for patients or companies?
My hard and fast rule in america is that everything aside from unions do not work in the interest of the people. The sooner this is taught to our kids, the better off they'll be from being indoctrinated from the trash on instagram/tiktok.
