muriithi··on Girl buys water, spends night in jail
What about being arrested for filming the police and getting your dog shot dead after getting out of the car and lunging at an officer?

muriithi··on Bugs produce diesel on demand
The most frustrating thing about reading about exciting discoveries is how few of them ever go into 'production' in the near future.

-Graphene

-AIDS vaccine

-Malaria vaccine

-Fusion reactors

muriithi··on Get that job at Facebook (2012)
This sounds similar to something I read about the process at Shopify.

muriithi··on JQuery Annotated Source

muriithi··on Two Months of Soylent
Even more interesting is moving from running 7miles to pi miles
muriithi··on We Found Our Son in the Subway
This would never have happened in Kenya where the Children's Act expressly forbids homosexuals from adopting. Sad.
muriithi··on DIY Weapons of the Syrian Rebels
I read the article because I found the ingenuity of fabricating their own weapons interesting.

It has nothing to do with their ideology of beliefs.

muriithi··on Needleless Vaccinations a Huge Step Toward Eradicating Infectious Disease
This is a good move.

Unfortunately this may not end polio just yet.

Here in Kenya there has been several polio cases all which have been traced to unstable countries like Somalia where there is no effective government. This will however make it easier to carry out vaccinations even in unstable countries.

muriithi··on How to secure an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server
Security by obscurity. It is trivial to use a port scanner to discover open ports(including your "new" ssh port).
muriithi··on Kenyan Women Create Their Own 'Geek Culture'

muriithi··on Google Pays for Drones To Bust African Rhino Poachers
I hope this will reduce incidents like these[0].

My fear is that it might be too little too late.

muriithi··on Ask HN: Is this idea worth pursuing?
How common are the three apps? There would be a market if they are pretty common.
muriithi··on Why Responsive Design Is Not Worth It
So would you rather piss off those on small screens, or go the responsive route even if it is not optimal for the small screen.

I always wonder how long it will take for tablets and phones to be so ubiquitous that this debate will become moot and you target mobile from the get-go?

muriithi··on Facebook party invite sparks riot in Haren, Netherlands
I had to check whether today is April 1.
muriithi··on Depression lies
I went to college (here in Kenya) with two sisters whose family had a history of suicide. Both committed suicide after they had graduated.

The sad thing is that people rarely talk about mental health issues[1].

There is also a shortage of psychiatrists and when they are found most people cannot afford them.

muriithi··on Amazon S3 - Cross Origin Resource Sharing Support
If the request is made by a web page from a different server it would ordinarily be rejected because of the same origin policy.

Using CORS allows you to specify which servers you can accept requests from unless of course you are using ; Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *

More info ; https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/HTTP_access_control http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-origin_resource_sharing

muriithi··on The Invisible Bank: How Kenya Has Beaten the World in Mobile Money
Like most start-ups the established players underestimated the capacity of the new kid on the block to eat their lunch[1].

By the time banks ganged together to lobby against the service it was too late [2].

muriithi··on Treating JavaScript like a 30 year old language
The only way I can know that the code is boilerplate and "nobody should have to read it anyway" is by reading it.

Why make me scroll horizontally?

muriithi··on A VC-funded startup called WhosHere is trying to steal my social network
The Other Side of the Story

muriithi··on Submarine Cable Map
I cannot help but salivate at the dense links connecting US/Europe and US/Asia.

Here in Kenya we only have 3 cables. Since last week the internet has been very slow after the main cable was severed by a ship anchor. The second cable seemed to have problems upstream so all the traffic has been routed to the third cable.

muriithi··on [dead]
>Should i elaborate further?

Yes. What is the url of the financial statements site?

muriithi··on Amazon announces AWS GovCloud for U.S. government agencies
I wonder what they mean by "AWS GovCloud is physically and logically accessible by U.S. persons only"?
muriithi··on Who stole the Mona Lisa?
"The far-right Action Française newspaper blamed the Jews"

Looks like prejudice is as old as humanity itself!

muriithi··on Why text messages are limited to 160 characters
Here in Kenya we pay between Kshs 1-2 per message to send.

Receiving is free.

Considering that the exchange rate is Kshs 80 to 1$ a message is about 1.25 to 2.50 cents.

muriithi··on The Future of Cheap Androids Begins Now
Yep. Two weeks ago I bought a cheap Huawei Ideos running Froyo at about $100 here in Kenya.

Testing Android apps on a physical device beats using the emulator hands down.

muriithi··on Dear British Government: You've Screwed Up (Startup) Visas Badly
His "data" is purely anecdotal since his sample is limited to those developers he has worked with. However it is possible that you can have many good immigrant developers and a disproportionately lower number who go ahead and found startups.

Not every developer wants to be a startup founder.

muriithi··on DECONSTRUCTING THE MYTH ABOUT VENTURE RISK: A WAY OUT OF DILUTION
Why did you decide to use caps in the title?
muriithi··on A Vegan No More
She even says that she and her family has received threats!

What would make someone do that simply because the lady has started eating meat?

muriithi··on Startup idea for you: Modern e-commerce isn't enough
I liked the article's heading and thought it had been done using image replacement.

Turns out it is a font imported from Google's font directory called "IM Fell DW Pica".

Nice font especially for headings.
