muricula··on Reptar
Modern Intel CPUs I am led to believe that issuing nops is actually slower than adding prefixes. I think there is work in the backend updating retired instruction counters and other state which still occurs for nops, but decoding prefixes happens entirely in the front end.

When a nop truly is necessary you will see compilers and performance engineers add prefixes to the nop to make it the desired size.

muricula··on Enable ARMv9 Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) on Pixel 8
There is almost certainly a performance and battery life hit. Each pointer dereference will trigger a lookup in the MTE tag table, and a comparison between the pointer's tag and the table's tag.

So you have a decently sized chunk of RAM set aside for the tag table, more memory bandwidth used up by table lookups, and the cost of the actual tag checks.

muricula··on Strontium isoscape of Angola and implications for archaeology of the slave trade
Where did you learn that most of the slave owners were killed in the war? Most of the South's slave owning political leadership including Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis lived long and healthy lives after the war.
muricula··on Strontium isoscape of Angola and implications for archaeology of the slave trade
It's actually a very common class of techniques. Carbon-14 dating relies on the ratios of carbon atoms, and is widely used for dating younger stuff. However, its relatively short half life means that for older stuff archeologists need to rely on other elements rarely found in organic materials like the uranium-lead decay path or in this case strontium.
muricula··on Boys and Men in the United States Are Struggling. The Left Should Talk About It
Those aren't political rights, those are social norms. If a man does any of those things, it's frowned upon, but if a woman tried to vote in the 19th century she'd be thrown in jail.

I'm totally on board with people wearing whatever, it's a free country, but equating political rights with social norms is a false dichotomy.

muricula··on North Korean campaign targeting security researchers
The speculation I've seen is that they're intending to steal someone's research, weaponize it, and using it against their adversaries.
muricula··on Close to the Machine: Technophilia and its discontents
I haven't read Ullman's memoir, but I'll just put down "Soul of a New Machine" by Tracy Kidder as a peek into hardware history you may find interesting.

muricula··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
Because on a map it's already implicit in where the pin actually is. You're staring at a pin in Westville Chelsea.
muricula··on Advanced Performance Extensions (APX)
It seems like most of these new instructions and registers correspond to the original armv8 base isa. I'm going to go out on a limb here and suppose that's not an accident. Does anyone know why Intel thinks x86 needs them?

Is the goal here to increase the decode bandwidth of Intel CPUs?

Is the goal to reduce demands on load-store units by increasing the number of registers?

Are they hoping to make it easier to port or JIT armv8 asm to Intel CPUs?

muricula··on Mandatory enforcement of indirect branch targets
Yes, on arm the branch type is saved in SPSR_EL1 in the BTYPE field. That stands for Saved Program State Register for Kernel Mode (Exception Level 1) and Branch Type. https://developer.arm.com/documentation/ddi0595/2021-12/AArc...
muricula··on Windows: A software engineering odyssey (2000)
A few years ago when I was there, there were still remnants of that same Dave Cutler NT culture, especially around the folks who worked on minkernel/.

I agree there are definitely shitty chunks Windows, but there are still some very solid foundations there to this day.

Clang's ir is more c like. I can't find a link to a good example offhand, but if you pass the right combinations of flags to clang you can dump it.

The current Israel-Palestine conflict is actually less than 100 years old. The Israelis and Palestinians weren't fighting under the Ottomans, which lasted over 400 years.

The ability to position and manipulate virtual objects "in" the physical world. It's also supposed to be capable of 3d video playback and capture.

2d screens can't really do 3d, and definitely can't put things in the room around you.

People have already dreamed up all sorts of game ideas for passthrough AR, as well as CAD and 3d design (think autocad, blender etc.).

If you're using it as a stand in for a 2d display it may not be worth it -- it's just bigger in your field vision.

muricula··on The greatest risk of AI is from the people who control it, not the tech itself
Most modern CPUs (really SOCs) have an integrated GPU built in, which isn't half bad. Heck, the GPU often takes significantly up more space on the silicon die than the CPU does.
muricula··on Envisioning a Simplified Intel Architecture
Looks like you will still be able to run 32 bit user mode applications under a 64 bit kernel. I'm not sure, but I think 32 bit guest kernels get the ax as well.

" 3.3 Removal of 16-Bit and 32-Bit Protected Mode

16-bit and 32-bit protected mode are not supported anymore and cannot be entered. The CPU always operates in long mode. The 32-bit submode of Intel64 (compatibility mode) still exists. ... "

muricula··on Beautiful branchless binary search
msvc does not support inline asm for x86_64 code. Additionally, inline asm can be quite fragile, can impede other optimization opportunities, and it is easy to misstate your inline asm's invariants and side effects to the compiler.
muricula··on Microsoft exec says Windows 11 kernel will soon be booting with Rust inside
No. In this context reverse engineering is looking at the assembly to understand what it does. Once you understand that, you can figure out how to exploit the code, by, sending a subtly malformed packet which will cause a server to write out of bounds of some array, and corrupt the servers memory. By very carefully corrupting the server's memory the attacker can hijack the server to do whatever they want.

The enum to tell what shape an object is costs something, probably 4 bytes. Storing the 8 byte vtable constant isn't so bad considering.
