mumblerino··on BPG Image Format
> Performance is not a factor in this.

What a completely ridiculous statement. Why else would anyone choose BGP if not for performance (i.e. download speed)? The choice to use BGP over a plain old JPG would be made specifically by people who do care.

mumblerino··on A web of trust for NPM
There’s a pretty good reason, actually, and it’s exactly npm.

Because dependencies are managed so easily in Node, it makes no sense for Node core developers to implement more and more of the ever-expanding APIs offered by the browser. They’re better off spending that time tightening the system and perhaps offering low-level interfaces.

mumblerino··on GHunt – An OSINT tool to extract information about a Google account
How convenient that this repo was published just a day too late. Now it’s just advertising something that it doesn’t do, either because it never did or because Google fixed it. I think it’s the former.
mumblerino··on Microsoft forcing Edge browser webview on Outlook for Android app users
The rendering engine of a webview is irrelevant to the end user, Edge is just as capable.

What I hate is that all of these apps unnecessarily wrap a web view at all.

I’m surprised that Apple allows Google and Facebook to break the native browser experience for no good reason. I hope Apple starts blocking this and Android follows suit.

mumblerino··on GHunt – An OSINT tool to extract information about a Google account
Unless something changed lately, this is a little deceiving.

If you check your own account, it finds albums and can even download some shared photos.

If you check the same account but using another account's cookies… surprise surprise, "No album" appears.

mumblerino··on BPG Image Format
The point of using a format over another, given the availability, is to gain performance.

You're suggesting to load a whole new parser, parse images at a higher level than browsers can (i.e. slower and with less concurrency), and make `<img>` a whole lot harder to manage.

That's not worth it at all unless the savings are substantial (say BMP vs JPEG)

mumblerino··on Node.js malware caught posting IPs, username, and device info on GitHub
By default, “npm install” also has the ability to run code after the installation, so npx is not any less safe.
mumblerino··on Apple says electronics recycler “illegally” reselling over 100k iPhones, iPads
I really hope this makes the news internationally because it’s shameful on Apple’s part. The best way to recycle is to reuse.
mumblerino··on I used the internet to painlessly relearn a foreign language
I’m in the immersion camp, but give me a table of Spanish conjugations and it’s a million times better than having to figure it out one word at a time.

Additionally, for really foreign languages (e.g. English vs Chinese) knowing in what order to place words and whether words are needed at all is of great help.

Both parts are needed.

mumblerino··on Google requiring Android apps on Play store to use its billing system next year
That’s not a fair comparison, at least on Android where you do have a choice to just google apps and install them from the open web.

App stores are more like Zapier, where your customers can find you, but you have to follow Zapier’s rules because you’re using Zapier’s platform.

mumblerino··on APFS changes in Big Sur: how Time Machine backs up to APFS
To do that, they'd have to lower those prices. They have been the same since 2017
mumblerino··on Hotel guest in Thailand jailed for defamation after posting bad online reviews
They took him 250km away to where the hotel is and imprisoned him there. Does that sound like he was arrested for immigration troubles or this specific defamation suit?

Thai police can't speak English, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to ask the immigration police (which, by definition, deals with foreigners) to do it.

mumblerino··on Hotel guest in Thailand jailed for defamation after posting bad online reviews
Again here you're just venting about "those guys." Some laws are "the law" in Nazi Germany too (not to cite more modern examples), so it's perfectly fine to call them out.
mumblerino··on Hotel guest in Thailand jailed for defamation after posting bad online reviews
I don’t know why this comment was downvoted. It makes sense and is right.
mumblerino··on Hotel guest in Thailand jailed for defamation after posting bad online reviews
The difference is obviously the millions of baht flowing.
mumblerino··on Hotel guest in Thailand jailed for defamation after posting bad online reviews
Regardless of what you said about “those guys,” which is barely relevant to the story, if we are to believe the business owners, they’re right in suing for defamation (the guy left 3 reviews out of spite)

However the problem is that the police considers this a good enough reason to jail someone working there legally after picking him up from his workplace.

I don’t think that’s fair.

mumblerino··on Show HN: DevUtils.app – Developer Utilities for macOS
Looks great, thanks!

Having to guess command names however isn't great in Boop.

mumblerino··on Someone has stolen my Instagram account
Ah yes sure you don’t pay Google a dime, so don’t you worry if you lose your account tomorrow, it’s not like anything is owed to you. Say bye to verroq@gmail.com
mumblerino··on American sued in Thailand over negative Tripadvisor review
What a ridiculous situation. The guy was arrested and brought to the minuscole island because of a defamation suit. Imagine that.

The article is quite light on details, so here’s another one that also links to the full response by the hotel owners: https://mothership.sg/2020/09/sea-view-resort-defamation-law...

mumblerino··on Pijul: A intuitive VCS unlike Git that's based on sound theory of patches
But Pija is not part of the name; Pij is.

Italians use Fica for the female counterpart, and the national automobile company recently formed FCA. People joked about it and then everyone moved on.

mumblerino··on Time Zone Bugs I Ran Into
Can’t most of these issues be solved by not using timezones at all on servers?

All data should be UTC; timezones only apply when the data is shown to the user, possibly on the client itself, which likely can automatically display the right time for a UTC date.

mumblerino··on A device to restore vision to the blind is being prepared for clinical trials
I can’t help but wonder about how someone who’s never seen would react after such an implant, once it actually reaches the market.
mumblerino··on California to Require All New Vehicles Be Zero-Emission by 2035
15 years away.

Surely you could require new vehicles to be zero-emission sooner than that?

mumblerino··on Firefox usage is down despite Mozilla's top exec pay going up
For people who don't particularly care about privacy, Firefox has nothing to offer and has a worse overall experience to Chrome.

I made the switch from Chrome to Firefox a year ago when for whatever reason Chrome started stalling. A year in, Containers all the rage, I still hate Firefox because its autocomplete sucks and if I type a/b in the search bar it tries to load http://a/b, what kind of logic is that? This isn't 1995. They literally fixed only this 2 versions ago.

mumblerino··on New JSX Transform
The main difference is that JSX is natively supported by the majority of modern tools while this is a plain string that needs extra plugins everywhere.

Reading the "Improvements over JSX" [1] I don't see anything that makes it worth the hassle (unless you really hate transpilers/tools). Most of them are outdated or not actual "Improvements".

mumblerino··on Chrome Web Store payments deprecation

mumblerino··on Ask HN: I'm looking for a simple, remote, locally-encrypted storage solution
While looking for a way to mount a cloud storage, I found a product that handles both the mounting and the encryption https://cloudmounter.net/cloud-encryption.html
mumblerino··on Ask HN: I'm looking for a simple, remote, locally-encrypted storage solution
This looks great, thank you! However it needs the encrypted files available locally. I wonder if I can mount S3 locally and then use Cryptomator to use that without locking the Finder.
mumblerino··on How I think I want to drop modern Python packages into a single program
After we come up with that “one line”, we tend to forget how long it took us to get there.

For newbies, writing one line is impossible.
