mucle6··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
This makes sense. I just can't imagine how most people hate the autocomplete. If you like a suggestion you hit tab. If not you keep typing.
mucle6··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
I am so confused. When I write code, I think "Okay I want to write a for loop that does xyz." How is it hard to know if copilot did or didn't do what you wanted?
mucle6··on Did GitHub Copilot increase my productivity?
To me copilot feels like a natural extension of vim. Vim is world class for editing code and copilot is incredible at generating code.
mucle6··on Fort Worth's tallest building sells for $12.3M, bought for $137.5M in 2021
I don't see how this prevents economics from taking over. If nobody bid over 12 million, thats a signal that nobody thought it was worth say 20 million. Otherwise they would have bid.
mucle6··on Leaked deck reveals how OpenAI is pitching publisher partnerships
I hope they keep a subscription to let me pay for non ad results. I'm assuming the non ad google results are still somehow influenced by how much money they make google so I wish google offered something similar
mucle6··on Familial Transmission of Personality Is Higher Than Shown in Typical Studies
Didn't expect to see statistical consequences of fat tails! I bought that book and it was soooooo dense. I had trouble keeping up with it even after rereading it. Its basically a textbook
mucle6··on Familial Transmission of Personality Is Higher Than Shown in Typical Studies
Can you share some resources or topics to research for someone who doesn't know what a weak effect or co-linearity?

If I google those topics, I don't know if I'll find anything relating to a criticism of this field.

mucle6··on Coding interviews are stupid (ish)
I think your analogy of pools is spot on.

The goal is to view people as different "grades" like a commodity. They aren't measuring directly for skill, instead they're measuring for the odds you match a some "grade" of software developer.

To your point, if memorizing the first 1k digits of pi correlated with a higher "grade", then companies would use that instead.

90% of the filter is resume formatting!!!? I'm open to hear your experience but that sounds like an arbitrary filter which limits your pool more than it selects for talent
mucle6··on Ask HN: What nonfiction books do you keep rereading?
I've heard so many good things about lisp, but unfortunately I've never had a chance to learn it.

Can you share a bit on why you love it

mucle6··on How I think about debt
Not trying to be pedantic, just curious.

Money isn't zero sum right? Like the U.S. Government prints it and spends it, so its not clear to me that there is a balance sheet of cash being someone elses debt. Unless its in a metaphorical sense like we're all in "debt" to the U.S government and we pay interest when they inflate more money.

mucle6··on The Three Byte Fix
Does anyone have tips for how to navigate new code bases faster? I feel like I would have given up reading through the code before I found the issue discussed in the article

I didn't read through the code but maybe the library was small and this was just a case of checking the difference between c++ and js by line for 1k lines or something

mucle6··on GitHub Copilot Workspace: Technical Preview
I wonder if we can use "copilot-ability" as a proxy for code base complexity.

In other words, if copilot can't help you write code, then could that mean your code base is too complicated for a beginner to understand and modify?

mucle6··on GitHub Copilot Workspace: Technical Preview
Do you not have a good experience with github copilot? I recently started using it and it will write functions that are 90% right based on comments, and I just modify what I want.

I've felt at least a 2x speedup, maybe even 4x. That said I'm working on a new project where I'm writing a lot of code. For making small changes I could see how its much less valuable.

mucle6··on Bayer is getting rid of bosses and asking staff to ‘self-organize’
I interviewed there, and took a tour of their office. From what everyone said and what I saw, I don't think the handbook is outdated.
mucle6··on Big Tech's underground race to buy AI training data
I love this fact! I would have never realized it
mucle6··on Starbucks is raising prices almost every month now
I have been eating out and spending a lot of money lately, but then I read somewhere that $28 per day is 10k per year.

So I started a budget and Starbucks was one of the first things I cut

mucle6··on DeWitt and Stonebraker's "MapReduce: A major step backwards" (2009)
I like your perspective
mucle6··on How The Pentagon learned to use targeted ads to find its targets
I don't understand how targeted ads on Grindr can be used to get peoples locations.

Does the ad auction tell the users current location? Does grindr let you run your own auction bidder on your own machine?

mucle6··on Cellular outage in U.S. hits AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon users
I think you're right, and I'd like to amend the "should always" to "after product market fit". I'm always trying to stop myself from prematurely optimizing
mucle6··on Latest ChatGPT 4 System prompt (1,700 tokens)
Its interesting how many times they have to repeat their instructions around lyrics and recipes.

To me thats a signal that even the people responsible for creating ai don't have a good solution to get the models to do what you want

mucle6··on Retired teacher's pension stopped as provider refuses to believe she is not dead
That assumes all deaths are logged. There are strong financial incentives for relatives to hide a death from the government if it means getting a check every month
mucle6··on YouTube TV, which costs $73 a month, agrees to end "$600 less than cable" ads
Even if they didn't profit from the ads, could they get rid of them?
mucle6··on YouTube TV, which costs $73 a month, agrees to end "$600 less than cable" ads
I thought you could skip ads in dvr?
mucle6··on SpaceX files for new 29,988-satellite W-band network
Junk? Why do people who dislike the outcomes of capitalism use hyperbole?
mucle6··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
I don't know enough, but I bet with options you could make something close to a double or nothing boolean bet
mucle6··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
I would have never considered this. Such an interesting way to think about the problem
mucle6··on Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started
This is very interesting, but it assumes a coin is biased the same way every flip.

If a coin is more likely to land on the side it starts on, then the bias can change between flips. To fix this, we just need to make sure the coin starts the same side up before every flip.

mucle6··on LLMs can't self-correct in reasoning tasks, DeepMind study finds
I can write code, and if I'm told my code doesn't work, I can fix it.
