msy··on Fitbit users are unwittingly sharing details of their sex lives with the world
And that comment right there is why programmers shouldn't design social networks.
msy··on Onswipe Wants To Make Slate, Forbes And More Feel Like A Native Tablet App
Given the UX carwreck onSwipe's ipad theme on wordpress.com is I hope for Forbes' sake things have got better. Page turning effects and other CSS3 transition icing are cute and all the the combination of slow, juddery scrolling and moving and the complete lack of feedback (click on something, wait, wonder if it's broken, slowly watch content judder up the page, wait patiently to be able to actually read it....) renders sites I usually enjoy unreadable.
msy··on Google discontinues support for IE7 in Google Apps
This also means they're dropping IE8, which generally is considere to have largest market share at the moment when IE10 comes out, which is already in Beta.
msy··on Facebook's Internet identity monopoly
The thing that amuses me is the more Facebook attempts to become the monolithic center of identity online, the more people I know have multiple accounts or simply stop using it altogether. Of late I keep hearing of people setting up 'throw away' Facebook accounts for services that require it. A single identity is fundamentally at odds with the way people work, the more this is pushed, the more people will shy away or hack around it and in the process the more damage Facebook will do to it's much-vaunted social graph.
msy··on Microsoft refuses to endorse WebGL, labels it ‘harmful’
I asked Paul Irish, Chome Developer relations: @paul_irish re http://bit.ly/kOZ7Lp - MSFT wrong? Security risk in Chrome/FF with WebGL?

http://twitter.com/#!/paul_irish/status/81492337108328448 @AlexGraul i think chrome's record in pwn2own is a good indicator of our commitment to security while delivering great features. :)

msy··on Microsoft refuses to endorse WebGL, labels it ‘harmful’
Well either Google and Mozilla are knowingly shipping insecure code or Microsoft is, to some degree, wrong. Given the history of the organisations in question I'm going to assume Microsoft wrong or not telling the whole story until we hear a response from Moz or Google.
msy··on Elixir v0.3 released: Method dispatching and charming syntax for the Erlang VM
Anyone know how this compares or differs to Reia, another attempt at Ruby-like syntax on Erlang?
msy··on Tower Bridge bot killed by Twitter, replaced with marketing
Given how often this happens with Twitter, Facebook and ever other Corp-owned namespace the more I appreciate the clear ownership status afforded by DNS, despite it's many flaws.

It's also why I put my domain on my business card but not my Twitter, all it'd take is an account hack and some spam or a backhander from some firm and it would't be mind anymore with no recourse whatsoever.

msy··on Dieter Rams , the German industrial designer who inspired Apple
If you like his stuff take a look at Vitsoe.com, it's the shelving system he developed. Beautiful, functional, designed to last forever. Amazing example of what industrial design can be. The philosophy of the product permeates everything the company does, it's quite something.
msy··on The Financial Times Tries An Apple End-Run
Compared to native apps it's a poor experience. Awkward, clunky and unresponsive. If anything I think this strengthens Apple's hand rather than weakening it.
msy··on [dead]
Given there is an absolutely finite number of bitcoins doesn't this mean that given enough losses over time we will in fact run out of bitcoins with no mechanism (by design) to replace the supply, adding further deflationary pressure?

Given we're talking about bitcoins this discussion is about as practical as discussing a russian tank invasion of western europe but it's interesting none the less.

msy··on London Is Gonna Be Pissed, But We Prefer Berlin for Startups
I'm sorry but you have no idea what you're talking about. London's stuffed to the gills with media companies doing interesting work. This article exists because it's accepted orthodoxy that London is the capital of tech and media in Europe.
msy··on Was LinkedIn Scammed?
There's a big difference between a VC round and the open market. The markets are often not driven by anything even related to the companies whose valuations fluctuate wildly by billions of dollars in under a second. They don't open to you (to same degree) to hostile takeovers, pump-dump schemes and naked short attacks. They force companies to kowtow to the opinionated whims of unaccountable analysts and focus on short term profits over long term strategy.
msy··on Was LinkedIn Scammed?
Am I the only one who feels that if I'd put in the blood, sweat and tears to build a company to the point where it could be IPO'd I'd be more likely to gouge my eye out with a rusty spoon that open it to the sharks, sociopaths, speculators and manipulators of wall st and the open market?
msy··on 24in60.com: The last 24 hours in 60-second, unbiased news bites.
So rephrased, unsourced content edited anonymously? No thanks.
msy··on Angry Birds for Chrome in Canvas and WebGL
And we all laughed when RMS warned us about obfuscation in web apps.
msy··on Angry Birds for Chrome in Canvas and WebGL
Given HTML5 Audio it makes you wonder whether a Flash requirement isn't partially a FU to Apple.
msy··on WebKit Remote Debugging
Awesome! Weinre http://pmuellr.github.com/weinre/ provides similar but more limited functionality and has saved me in so many mobile-specific WTFs I've lost track.
msy··on [dead]
Sorry, I thought this was Hacker News, not Libertarian Rants.
msy··on Bitcoin money ≠ the Gold Standard.
So if this is an unstable, unregulated market that shouldn't be used for anything more serious than pizza at what point is that going to change? What magical thing is going effect to change?

And if that thing doesn't exist, what is this apart from a more complicated way to waste electricity than Seti@Home?

msy··on Bitcoin money ≠ the Gold Standard.
Why not? If the crypto is bulletproof and the theory is sound shouldn't it be the ultimate place to keep your money?
msy··on Bitcoin money ≠ the Gold Standard.
I'd like to see some of the many bitcoin evangalists about the place convert their life savings, serious cash, into BitCoins and keep it that way. Talk is cheap, particularly when it's abstract economic theory.

Then I might think it's got something in it rather that looking like a volatile ponzi scheme that geeks are keen because they think they're in early and going to make mint.

msy··on Google Releases JavaScript.next to JavaScript Compiler Traceur
The double underscore syntax is used in Javascript already for getters and setters: this.__defineGetter__
msy··on Facebook shoots first, ignores questions later; account lock-out attack works
I feel like I'm repeating myself daily at the moment. If you're not paying for it, you shouldn't expect anything. If people paid for the services they used, they'd have recourse and the interests of the provider and the consumer would be aligned. As it stands, why would or should Facebook give a shit?

Brands building their online presence via Facebook are mad as far as I'm concerned, Facebook owns that content, they can do with it what they want and as this demonstrates, zero recourse.

msy··on Silk - Filter and Visualize Data in Seconds
So it's a metadata visualisation tool. Interesting but in no way groundbreaking. The problem isn't visualising metadata, that's easy. The problem is automating the creation of metadata.
msy··on Visa Backs Jack Dorsey's Square
Square is awesome but I wish someone would do what it takes to kick the shit out of the broken mess that is the credit card system instead of attempting to fix some of the problems at the edge. Admittedly this is in the Seriously Hard category of problems.
msy··on Tumblr "Disappears" Microsoft's Danah Boyd
Another case of "if you're not paying for it, don't expect shit"
msy··on Warning: How Google Checkout Screwed Project Zomboid
Google customer service is an oxymoron.
msy··on Finally someone makes sense of JavaScript's this keyword
You're not alone, every time I do this I feel like I'm going wrong somewhere. I know it's avoidable via binding/currying/proxying but often those solutions end up looking uglier and are harder to follow.
msy··on Spine -- A lightweight framework for building JavaScript web applications
To a large degree that's what Ender.js is trying to do. Whether it'll succeed or not remains to be seen.
