msl09··on Fedora Loves Python
yeah it's a much better approach when you want to make sure that your requirements.txt file contains all the requirements
msl09··on Distributions are becoming irrelevant: difference was our strength and liability
> I tried getting the Debian Ruby team, who had similar complaints before, to join me on a mailing list so that we could discuss a common interface between Gems developers and Linux distributions, but once again, that did not actually happen.

2-3 years ago debian called out for python developers to help port and all the remaining python2 packages to python3 so that in the future we could drop python2 support. Being pretty familiar with python and somewhat familiar with migrating python2 projects I decided to join the project.

The process of porting mostly involved trying to talk to existing maintainers and seeing if they are already porting the packages and if they are not suggesting that you could help if they needed. I have sent dozens of emails and I got maybe 2 replies. Those were direct emails to the maintainers. Eventually I got so frustrated with how slow and disorganized the process was that I decided to drop it.

When I commented that with other debian contributors they expressed that this was a very old problem and that there is not much that can be done about it since the debian developers are volunteers and likely have other responsibilities other than maintaining their packages.

In retrospect I think debian in particular needs an automatic way to ask maintainers every now and then if they are still willing to maintain their respective packages and if they are not or do not respond in a timely fashion, put them up for adoption.

msl09··on Freshwater from salt water using only solar energy
Yeah. After the initial excitement my first thought was if using nanotechnology could make the amortized cost of a panel prohibitively expensive.
msl09··on Ask HN: What personal finance advice would you give your 25yo self ?
Scratches his head mumbling What kind of financial advice can I give to some one that has no job...?

Oh yeah, you don't need to save that internship money, I'm good now. Besides, I make like 5-6 times what you are making.

msl09··on New US visa requires applicants for social media handles from the last 5 years
Does this affect the process for all visas? Including tourism?
msl09··on Video Messages and Telescope on Telegram
It's not just because it's owned by facebook. It's also because it's closed source which means that the floor can be removed from under your feet when you least expect and they can weaken the security whenever they like to make way for whatever social feature they want.

In theory telegram is insecure because it doesn't follow the best tried standards in security even though no viable attack have been made.

In theory whatsapp is secure because the last time a third party audited the source code no gross infringements existed.

Almost every chat app is insecure next to signal but indeed the only merit of whatsapp is that it's popular in some countries.

msl09··on IBM unveils its most powerful quantum processor
I was about to give a bunch of praise for raising its ability to reach the community and create a very engaging video but then they pulled out an introduction page[0] that does not work on firefox (the SVGs for the superposition states render as blanks).

So close.

msl09··on Vancouver bans whales and dolphins at aquarium
Yeah though I'm on the fence regarding orangutans, considering how their natural environment is being quickly destroyed.
msl09··on Vancouver bans whales and dolphins at aquarium
All of the people I know that had contact with farm animals are the least moved by PETA-like farm cruelty videos. They often shrug and say, "in my farm it's not like that".

On the other hand all of them are against seeing dolphin or whale cruelty even if only a handful of them ever saw any of cetacean (me included).

I know that this is all anecdotal evidence but it the most that I can produce.

msl09··on The new contribution workflow for Gnome
The most impressive fact about this is that it actually works as advertised, though it took a little longer to build nautilus, more like 15 minutes.

This is so cool that I'm actually tempted to use it for non-gnome apps.

msl09··on BitErrant: SHA1 collision for backdooring binaries on BitTorrent
I'm surprised how nobody is talking about this
msl09··on Where Games Go to Sleep: The Game Preservation Crisis (2011)
Well, the internet archive stores the games, not the source or the development material. Maybe they could start doing so, but I guess it would cost them a lot to find storage space for that.
msl09··on France’s military is training eagles to attack drones
I think the reason that the French are investing in this solution is because other cheaper (or more effective) interceptor drone technology is still not ready to be used.

To think that the French army is not also investing on hunter drones is to severely underestimate the intelligence of that army.

msl09··on Is the Linux Desktop less secure than Windows 10? [pdf]
>Showing dialogs is not a solution. Various studies have already shown users click any dialog which pops up without actually reading the dialog.

I can't count the number of times that I was in the middle of writing a sentence, a dialog showed up, I accidentally pressed space bar and I was left wondering WTF just happened.

msl09··on New organisms have been formed using the first ever 6-letter genetic code
We are only 2 pairs away from encoding 8 bits DNAs
msl09··on Grokking Python 3’s str
If you are not using strings then very few things are different between Python 3 and 2 so the cost of change to a more maintained interpreter is even smaller for you. The only real problem you might have is having some library that doesn't have Python 3 support. Also since you are dealing with ml I must warn you that the developers already committed to not support Python 2 in the future, not sure about numpy though.
msl09··on There is no WhatsApp 'backdoor'

msl09··on An Ode to Linux Desktop Users Everywhere
I'm afraid hardware support is still all over the place linux. I also had the same experience that everything just works nowadays, but a lot of that is because I buy laptops from well known hardware manufacturers and my current computer is 7 years old. I was surprised to hear from a friend that he had a lot of trouble getting linux recognize his brand new nvidia video card.
msl09··on Top OpenBSD Donors
Yeah, Microsoft donated both individually and as part of the Core Infrastructure.
msl09··on Python Versions Used in Commercial Projects, 2016 Edition
I'm slightly moving backwards. Previously I just make Python 3 scripts with 0% retrocompatibility because I thought that Python 3 was going to happen soon and it was futile to try to resist. Now that my programs and scripts are getting used more frequently at work and outside of work I'm making more Python 2-3 compatible code because often people just try to use python myscript.py (that might just call any interpreter), or they use myscript.py in an development environment that only uses Python 2.

It's a bit sad to not be able to use some things that I really love about Python 3 but it makes me happier to see other people enjoying my work, so I'm going to bear with it for now.

msl09··on LessPass: sync-less open source password manager
I started using Nic Wolff's password generator[0] to solve that very problem, but I noticed that the need for connected passwords makes up a large size of the passwords that I needed to use, so I gave up on the idea of "store nothing passwords". The idea of generating always the same password for the same site is also doesn't work, because of database breaches, so in the end I created a program[1] that did all the things I needed. Check the README to know how it works.

msl09··on WebAssembly Browser Preview
>From that point forward, the binary format will be reset to version 1 and WebAssembly will be versionless

Why?

msl09··on Kubernetes 1.4: Making it easy to run on Kubernetes anywhere
"No guys stop complaining that google doesn't give support to kubernetes, we are not Google, we are the Cloud Native Computing Foundation." -- Some kubernetes developer.

Release blog of kubernetes brought to you by: -- Aparna Sinha, Product Manager, Google.

Seriously though those new features are really neat, and seems to compete with the ease of setup of docker 1.12(though swarm was a bit of a mess when I last tried to make something useful of it (docker 1.12.0)), I hope I can test them at work soon.

For now I'm having a great time with rancher.io and cattle.

msl09··on Is your JavaScript function actually pure?
>When we speak about the Fibonacci sequence, it's nonsensical to talk about f("pie").

Indeed it is, but I think you are taking his example literally. That problem can appear in more subtle ways.

Consider some other examples:

f(string)

Does f works for every string? What if it's unicode. What if it's an empty string? What if it's a sequence type(like an iterator over a stream) that returns the letters of a string?

mean(numbers)

What is the biggest number I can pass? If I pass a list of integers does it return a float or an integer? If I pass an empty list, does it return 0, -1, null, undefined?

There are several situations on which you can encounter similar situations. I do not disagree that all that type information has a cost, your type signature can become more complicated, your cognitive load can be increased, your code can be less flexible, it can be harder to integrate with existing technologies, but since the problem still exists I think it's very reasonable that the author is trying to keep that discussion alive.

msl09··on Pardon Snowden
Pardon my paranoia but, who's running this campaign?
msl09··on Facebook is imposing American censorship on the rest of the world
>Advise to simple "not use it" is harsh as it has a near monopoly as a communication tool for many communities. Without it I certainly would have no idea what happens with my relatives and friends, apart from my absolute nearest (which is another discussion).

I don't think there is any shortage of facebook alternatives out there, both in the messaging business or if you are taking about social networks(diaspora is my favorite btw).

Sure it's hard and annoying to move your friends away from facebook, but honestly is it really worth to bother to keep them friended on facebook. I honestly don't give a crap about knowing what's happening with my most distant relatives, except when I'm meeting then in person and I don't think they feel any different about me, that might just be my personal experience though.

Either way, I think that facebook's selective post display and the fact that you might be away(or busy) when something important to you is displayed on your stream make it an extremely unreliable way to know what's going on unless if you want to see useless news about celebrities.

If I really care, I call.

msl09··on You Suck at Excel with Joel Spolsky (2015) [video]
Yeah if excel was coughing with a few dozen tables I wonder what starts to happen when you process thousands or hundreds of thousands of values.

The pivot table got me jealous though.
