msk-lywenn··on Building the DirectX shader compiler better than Microsoft?
So the signing[1] DXIL.dll does is just a modified MD5?

Similar thing in France for the CRS a while back. CRS are a special kind of police that can be dispatched anywhere quickly in big packs. They're mostly here to "handle protests". They had trouble hiring so they lowered the required test score from 10/20 to 8/20.

It's usually forbidden to rely on those files as they can disappear with updates of windows. The best example I can think of is General MIDI. The files were avaialble with XP and below, and is now often explicitly forbidden because it's not available anymore or not in the same form making demos incompatible.

It's also often forbidden to use the filename to store data. There was that case of the 256B demo that relied on a deep hierarchy of directories to work :)

I'd rather say there is a definite cult over lisp. But it's very different from the other languages which I'd qualify as rather hardcore. Lisp's cult is a magical cult. No other language as such amazing stories as the space probe remotely debugged from earth with a repl, the extreme hot reload and mystical intertwining of assembly on PS2 of Jak & Daxter's GOAL, the MIT course with a Fantasia level of teaching, The symbolic machines, etc.

The only other language like that I can think of is smalltalk.

Very interesting! I wonder how much friction there would be in migrating the data from outline to affine.

Have you tried affine? If you did, how is the performance? Something I like a lot with outline is that it's super reactive and fast, even on low end servers or clients. Only the startup time is bad.

What do they mean by "neglected self host"? Is it just because the docker packages are not up to date? Can't we just build and run what's on github?

msk-lywenn··on Outline: Self hostable, realtime, Markdown compatible knowledge base
You can self host SSO. You maybe do already. Nextcloud, Gitea and Mattermost offer these services. We tried to use Mattermost but it didn't work. We went with Gitea. I only discovered later than Nextcloud also did.

I've never used gitlab so I can't say. We use gitea. I thought gitlab was some kind of github alternative, like gitea. It's a wiki too now?
msk-lywenn··on Outline: Self hostable, realtime, Markdown compatible knowledge base
Yes, that's one of the big hurdles at install. We solved it by logging in from our Gitea instance.

It was a mess to set up the first time. It's getting better. With been using it for about a year and we're very happy with it.
msk-lywenn··on "I Contribute to the Windows Kernel. We Are Slower" (2013)
I've often read that, but in my experience it's not true. Drivers before 7 don't work on 7+. Exes from win XP era often fail to run, even with the compatibility modes offered by the OS. Heck, the only times I used compatibility modes where as workarounds for binaries that didn't exist when XP support had already ended...

msk-lywenn··on Dear ImGui: Graphical User Interface library for C++
Are you asking about the IMGUI paradigm or DearIMGUI the library? In the case of DearIMGUI: - it does not handle theming (but forks do) - I don't know what reflow is - in a way, GPU acceleration is the default. In fact, DearIMGUI doesn't handle anything at all in that regards because it doesn't have to. You are the one responsible for drawing, DearIMGUI just outputs you a vertex buffer that you send to the GPU the way you want to. There are proposed backends but you can totally roll your own. People even have made networked and web backends. I don't know how those work.

msk-lywenn··on RPG Engine for the Nintendo 64
Lack of z-buffer proved not much to be an issue. On the N64, late games didn't even use it because of the stress it put on bandwidth.

However, lack of perspective correct texture filtering on PS1 was already ugly at the time.

msk-lywenn··on RPG Engine for the Nintendo 64
Why bother with 7 cartridges? They are pretty flexible, you can totally put flash memory in it and have a multiple gigabyte large "rom". Emulators would have to be updated though.
msk-lywenn··on Bosque Programming Language
Shouldn't the 8th line of the example code read "requires release (op == CalcOp::add || op == CalcOp::sub) ==> arg 2 != none;" ? I'm assuming it's some kind of constraint. Although if it is, the following "check arg2 != none;" seems redundant.

msk-lywenn··on Analogue 3D
The french, not european, french n64 has almost RGB built in! The motherboard was designed to and the pads are there for a few resistors and transistors. If you do add them and use an RGB cable from, say, a french super nintendo, you get the best analog RGB output there is on original n64. Well, 50Hz RGB. I still love mine

msk-lywenn··on Vulkan Documentation
OpenGL has never ever been used on PS4, it has always been a custom API. Unless you're talking homebrew stuff.

Vulkan was modeled after Mantle, AMD's own API that was basically what was available on consoles but less specific (ie. supporting more than a few custom GPUs). Direct3D 12 was modeled after consoles and Mantle, just like Vulkan. Same for Metal, that was made available in 2014, same year D3D12 was publicly announced.

msk-lywenn··on Fairphone 5 review: The most uncompromising repairable phone yet
I'd like to see a list of compatibility of parts between fairphone versions. I couldn't find any Fairphone's website. If there is nothing compatible, I really don't see the point either. Like if I had a 4 and was only interested in the upgraded camera, why can't I just put a camera from the 5 in the 4th? That would be actually game changing.
