msinclair··on I want to live like Costco people
Depending on how close/far your Costco is, it could be worth it for fuel savings alone. They're generally $0.15-$0.30 / gallon cheaper than nearby gas stations. I've seen it as much as $0.60 / gallon cheaper on occasion. On top of that, their gas is Top Tier.
msinclair··on JavaScript Trademark Update
How are they going to lose brand recognition, when a majority of people do not associate JavaScript with Oracle? The only language I associate with Oracle is Java.
msinclair··on APIs for content sites must be free
The question is: will that still be available after the API is paywalled?
msinclair··on Show HN: Build a JS-only interactive product walk-through for your landing page
Regarding the "Learn by using." comment -- this is how I am when it comes to interfaces. Actually exploring them and seeing what things are. Unfortunately, a larger number of users seem to be the opposite of that anymore (at least in my field). More and more users expect everything to be pointed out to them and they don't exhibit that same desire to explore. It's sad, really.
msinclair··on Scammers registering date-based domain names
Tell that to the any number of people that have fallen for similar (or even more basic) scams. Unfortunately, not everyone is Internet savvy enough to know what's legitimate and what's a scam.
msinclair··on The Man with the Golden Airline Ticket
And if he had flown, it still would have been unavailable. Along with the other thousands of booked flights.
msinclair··on Show HN: A simple memorable site to view and easily copy your public IP address
I prefer ip4.me personally.
msinclair··on Transmit 5
SQLyog is the same way. My only wish is that they would release a native Mac version. The last time I upgraded, I went with a 5-year upgrade plan because of how much I appreciate the software and the team behind it.

Entitlement: the amount to which a person has a right

Not to be confused with the other definition which has negative connotations.

msinclair··on Amazon to Build a Permanent Mary's Place Family Shelter Within Its Headquarters
The OP didn't say that women were homeless due to abuse and not drugs and that men were homeless due to drugs/PTSD.

In fact if you read what they wrote, they didn't specify sex at all. A man can be homeless due to an abusive relationship, they never said they couldn't. Hence independent statements. nsnick was the one assuming something.

msinclair··on Amazon to Build a Permanent Mary's Place Family Shelter Within Its Headquarters
That isn't what I said. I stated that it is more likely that a woman would be homeless from domestic abuse, not that men aren't the target of domestic abuse.
msinclair··on Amazon to Build a Permanent Mary's Place Family Shelter Within Its Headquarters
That's not really how I interpreted their message. It's more likely that a woman is homeless due to an abusive relationship than it is a man being homeless due to an abusive relationship. That isn't saying women are less likely to be homeless due to drugs. Independent statements.
msinclair··on Ask HN: Do you carry a backpack? Which one?
SwissGear Valve for the past 3 1/2 years. Got it for $30 from a Newegg Flash deal. It's held up surprisingly well and it fits everything I need without being ridiculously bulky: 15" MBP, ATH-M40x in hard shell case, iPad, stylus, spiral notebook, dot grid notebook, tiny travel router, battery charger, extra AA batteries, and my external trackpad + keyboard when I need them.

msinclair··on Ask HN: Why aren't there 3rd party laptop power adapters?
I would, however, pay premium for a power supply that doesn't fall apart like the Apple chargers do. (That being said, I consider the price Apple charges for their adapters premium as it is).
msinclair··on Quick, Draw
Familiarity with teammates may factor into that as well, partially from having unspoken frames of reference to infer from.

It is unmistakable how much the difficulty level ramps up when you're paired with those of an unlike-nature to you. Sometimes that level of abstraction is taken way outside of generic context clues.

msinclair··on Quick, Draw
When it comes to abstraction from a simple rendering – no shading, no sense of depth, no discernible dimensions – it's hard to extrapolate features.

I feel there is an immense difference between recognizing simple sketches and deriving what an object is based on extended characteristics.

The video you linked furthers that by showing that ASIMO was using three-dimensional observation to calculate certain features and ascertain what that object was.

msinclair··on Dear Google, Apple, Mozilla, and MS: Please End Auto-Playing Media in Browsers
Another problem that Facebook has (and I'm sure others have as well) is attempting to fetch dozens and dozens of videos. At once. This generally locks up even desktop browsers as they try to preload the content. I've seen it trying to grab 130 videos before. Pretty ridiculous.
msinclair··on Be careful about what you dislike
Except Internet Explorer... that will always be the same. :)
