mrverify··on Introducing LLaMA Voice Chat
Anyone build this? I'm not familiar with the cmake framework.
mrverify··on Ask HN: Is a MSc in Computer Science worth the time and money?
Definitely worth it. I have actually used my classes in AI and Simulation Theory along with Numerical Analysis a ton. I started as a hacker--coder not cracker--from childhood with basic/assembler/c and only one undergrad comp sci course and often rely on my MSCS to lend authority to my knowledge of computers. It can't hurt to get a MIS masters instead or a masters in engineering management and lean heavily on the basics; Algorithms and Data Structures, Theory of computation, and operating systems/computer architecture. You can study simulation, ai or numerical analysis at your leisure using a MOOC. Stanford is great, so is the FastAi course. You will not need a ton of math beyond diff-eq and linear algebra, heavier on the linear algebra.
mrverify··on China ‘began stockpiling PPE months before Covid outbreak’
Watch it. you might get $2500 deducted from your PayPal account.
mrverify··on Scrap the Small-Block V-8 Swap and Sub in This Literal Tesla Crate Motor
optimistically, 1KW of solar on the roof will yield 35kw per week which will just about charge a 700lb leaf battery. I know my truck will go about 2 miles on only electric up to 20mph even with a 3000lb trailer at about 0.5 miles (1kw battery, 35kw motor) before the gas kicks in.
mrverify··on Scrap the Small-Block V-8 Swap and Sub in This Literal Tesla Crate Motor
I know right where to put that. GM class c with solar panels. Sure it will take a week to get a miles worth of charge, but still, your range will be infinite.
mrverify··on Truck driver leads NJ Senate president after spending $153 on campaign
NJ isn't south jersey. south jersey could be reasonably plucked out of anywhere in deep red fly over country with 2 coasts(Atlantic, deleware) on each side.
mrverify··on Truck driver leads NJ Senate president after spending $153 on campaign
Hmm. Doesn't India have severe gun laws? Why aren't women safer in India yet?
mrverify··on Self Sabotage: Why Doing the Right Thing Results in Failure
Instead of the $150 hammer and $800 toilet seat, we get a $10 dollar hammer and $20 dollar toilet seat with $25,000 of ECNs and requirements changes.
mrverify··on New Research Quantifies ‘Zoning Tax’ Exacted by Land-Use Regulations
We all know what this is. Its just racism or classism. If I buy my house in x suburb where the cost of housing starts at 300k, I can keep this or that minority, or this or that class of individuals away from me.
mrverify··on We’re all criminals now
you could probably use CRISPR to literally trans-code it into base pairs and inject it into your genome, but the cost of synthesizing the oligonucleotide might be more than the wallet holds in some cases.
mrverify··on We’re all criminals now
The claim is that location of the asset is literally impossible to prove short of having the only copy of the key on a drive in possession of the prosecution. An example crypto asset, in this case, perhaps one that is less than the threshold for this law, but used in court can be easily used to show that the asset either exists in multiple places at once, or nowhere at all, and can even exist, ephemerally, in the mind of someone or multiple people.
mrverify··on We’re all criminals now
A crypto wallet is a handful of bytes. Perhaps a string of words if you are using passphrases as mnemonics. Where does that exist? A bank or exchange does have a physical location and would exist somewhere, but a crypto wallet really has no defined location unless specifically being held in a defined place on a defined server as per business rules. Its like saying "you cannot leave South Africa because your body is worth, like, um 50,000 USD in harvested organs..."
mrverify··on We’re all criminals now
"This is a fairly recent “announcement” and many people are upset about the Reserve Bank making up seemingly hostile and uninformed rules regarding something that has no notion of borders and is practically impossible for the regulators to control in terms of owning and transferring. Something that arguably does not even exist in any one location..." So now, a memorized key or password means you are transferring "right to capital" and therefore cannot leave South Africa? I'm fairly certain that Apartheid was thoroughly shot down back in the 80s.
mrverify··on We’re all criminals now
Your honor, can the prosecution please be compelled to demonstrate where the bitcoin physically exists? Oh on this computer? Well, the key is memorized and there are several copies saved all over the world in cloud computers. Can the prosecution show the court, physically, where in the computer the asset exists?
mrverify··on John McAfee found dead in Spanish jail after court approves extradition to US
I'm going to be that guy. He was suicided, probably by some other country that had business they didn't want him sharing with the USA. He was offering to help Cuba use crypto to get around embargo. Who else might he have helped?
mrverify··on Businesses found a way around worker shortage: Raising wages to $15/hour or more
In some more generous states, the maximum benefit plus the 300/week supplement comes out to 25/hr. That's hard to beat.
mrverify··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
Its worse than that. As a tenant, you cannot have people who are not on the lease stay long term without them going through a background check. This means that you may end up increasing the homelessness of relatives with temporary financial issues and also isolating potential mates with financial issues from living with their significant others until married, forcing the better financially equipped mate to take a hit to their credit/rent risk and lose the ability to rent in a better area. Also, you are severely limited in the things you can do at leased residences. Garden? Maybe not if its in the lease.

mrverify··on A Military Drone with a Mind of Its Own Was Used in Combat, U.N. Says
I believe general AI will emerge naturally. This does not bode well :(
mrverify··on The reason employers can't hire enough workers (opinion)
Well, I take that back. I guess when big banks are forced to take money from the government, they have to do something with it, so in that case, the execs get bonuses and stocks are bought back.
mrverify··on The reason employers can't hire enough workers (opinion)
That's a straw man argument. Both conditions do indeed raise prices, but only one is due to unnatural government intervention in the market.
mrverify··on The reason employers can't hire enough workers (opinion)
Where does she think this money is coming from? The poop fairy? Any raise in the cost of labor will be reflected in a price raise. I give you 22/hr now, but eggs are $7 a dozen. All of the raise is eaten up in price increases. How hard can this be? Retail has insanely tight margins where labor is the major cost center.
mrverify··on NHS calls for ban on toy neodymium magnets amid child safety fears
Welcome to the United States. Next, Kinder Eggs.
mrverify··on China will likely ban all Bitcoin mining soon
Wasn't that one of the largest complaints about bitcoin; that it was largely Chinese miner controlled?
mrverify··on ADHD: Talking to Yourself Crazy or a Coping Strategy?
Neither. It is a function of failure to suppress the motor aspects of internal speech that is a hallmark of ADHD.
mrverify··on What are the current “minimum system requirements” for a coding laptop?
If you like luxury, I hear a MacBook M1 air is more powerful than my mid 2020 high end MacBook Pro for 1/2 the price. If you have a powerful android smartphone, getting a lap dock will do the trick, especially if you can get termux working on it, although that is slowly being eaten away by android.
mrverify··on What are the current “minimum system requirements” for a coding laptop?
You can code with the cheapest Chromebook available. Everything can be in the cloud, including your Ryzen desktop via VNC or RDP--linux/Mac or windows respectively. I had a team that did all of its dev work in our VMware internal cloud and then pushed production into the amazon cloud. You can, and I have done, good work on a Samsung Dex based phone plugged into a monitor with keyboard and mouse because you can either use cloud based resources or your own 'internal' cloud based systems via the web.
mrverify··on The Big, Stuck Boat Is Glorious
Wouldn't it stand to reason that removing some of the containers would raise its draft a bit? It can't be that hard to do given that some smaller vessels include cranes.
mrverify··on Red Hat statement about RMS’s return to the Free Software Foundation board
I would call this more of a culture self-implosion than war. The end game for the winning side is a civilization where nobody can interact for fear of running afoul of ever changing--potentially ex-post facto--rules.
mrverify··on Statement regarding Richard Stallman's readmission to the FSF board
People on the autism spectrum and/or with ADHD will not be able to survive in the near future. The world is too sensitive to the types of mistakes they make while simultaneously being ignorant of their cause.
