mrvenkman··on YouTube-dl can no longer download age-restricted videos
The whole method that YouTube have used to set this up is worrying to me. In the space that the video is supposed to show there is simply a link to a website that you use to upload your details. It's a phisherman's dream.
mrvenkman··on Facebook moderator: ‘Every day was a nightmare’
Facebook should be more honest. Having the employee sign a non-disclosure agreement is disgraceful. These people are literally watching abuse and violence to make Facebook more money.

Update: I have just deleted my account. I decided that the fact that some people have to be miserable for me to use Facebook just isn't worth it.

mrvenkman··on New Royal Navy ship to protect 'critical' undersea cables
I read this and was worried until I pondered if critical communication was still reliant on undersea cables. A threat to the economic system is obviously an important factor.

I am no expert but I would hope that satellites are now used for defence based communication.

mrvenkman··on Sir Tim Berners-Lee warns of widening digital divide
I agree.

He is making the point that young people have found it hard to learn over the lockdown because of not being able to have access to education. He said, "A shocking number of kids in the UK don't have meaningful connectivity."

This has nothing to do with the toxicity of social networks.

I believe that connection to educational services should be free for all families that can't afford it in the UK.

mrvenkman··on Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling
Good point. It’s the DOS (Windows) vs Unix/Linux argument in a way.
mrvenkman··on Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling
My understanding is that “DDG” have their own “web crawler”?

What I understand from your reply is that they don’t?

So if I search on Bing for a specific keyword, I will get the same results from DDG.

What about misspelled words? I have used DDG before.. for about two weeks. They offer poor suggestions for my misspelling.

What I’m suggesting is using Google results even after misspellings. What are the laws on scraping Google for suggestions/misspellings?

Ditto! Sometimes I wonder if the one largest skillsets of becoming an AWS “engineer” is learning to memorise the service names and how they associate to the service offered!
mrvenkman··on Brave buys a search engine, promises no tracking, no profiling
Competing with Google is going to be difficult. I have a question: What is the consensus on forwarding any search "terms" to Google and then "scraping" the results back into the user - sort of a "proxy" search.

I mean - Google built their business on searching the internet, why can't there be a business that starts by searching Google?

mrvenkman··on Speed Is the Killer Feature
The "ipod" and "ipod Touch" were the reason the iPhone was successful. The speed and reaction time was important too - but I wouldn't call it a "killer feature" - it was necessary because phones weren't slow - actually there was nothing particularly slow about about the RAZR. I don't understand the comparison.
mrvenkman··on Captain Sir Tom Moore: 'Horrific' Trolling Hidden from Army Veteran
So I woke up this morning hearing this on the radio and it honestly really disgusted me.

I have been an internet user since 1992 and have been actively developing websites, apps and software for it since about 1998.

My affection for the internet now though is hanging by a very thin thread. Where as I was for privacy, I am now re-evaluating the level of anonymity that should be allowed online.

These people wouldn't shout insults in a crowd.

The way people use the internet has changed and I believe that companies like Facebook, Twitter, IG should have to apply for a license to operate. They aren't doing enough to protect good people from malicious narrow-minded people who bully others for fun. Another idea would be to not let users instantly send a message to others - give it a 24 hour delay and allow the sender to revoke what they have said after they have had a think about it.

Rant over. I might need a 24 hour delay!

mrvenkman··on Select a muscle and it provides the exercises to workout the selected muscle
This is such a great resource! I've started working out ... working out how to get fit! Lol. And it's a minefield but the way I can select which muscles I want to start with is a massive help.

mrvenkman··on Zoom improvements requested by music schools
Yes, and I am quite sure it would also be possible to "hide" a time code within the audio coming in that the softeare can use to remedy slight discrepancies over time. From my experience with sound and sound engineering, the brain wouldn't be able to hear any fluctuations that the software would need to make as the processing power nowadays is more than capable of processing this audio quickly.
mrvenkman··on Zoom improvements requested by music schools
Thinking out loud, I imagine this working quite well:

1. All contributing musicians broadcast they're ready to "jam"

2. Each musician taps a key on their keyboard (spacebar maybe) when instructed to on the 1st beat of a bar from a metronome written into the software

3. The software works out the delay, and plays back the rest of the audio stream with delay applied

mrvenkman··on Why can't I write code inside my browser?
I also get frustrated sometimes when programming, especially in a new language or environment and every time I find the solution to an issue that has taken days to resolve, I wish I had studied computer science. I wish I had learned from the ground up instead of jumping straight into trying to write code because I would of learned WHY.

I'm off to buy a computer science book - any recommendations?

mrvenkman··on Pirate Bay founder thinks Parler’s inability to stay online is 'embarrassing'
4 years after Facebook allowed the general public to join, the engineers created a PHP transpiler called "HipHop" which in itself, I would suggest, shows competence, engineering talent and a good understanding of PHP - the language that Facebook was at that point written in.

"The way these things work is that they act like they're the real login form, steal your credentials and usually send you off to the real bank so you think you made a typo or something."

mrvenkman··on Ask HN: Anyone feel Stack Overflow is becoming less helpful and more snarky?
I see a lot of questions down-voted due to insecure code: PHP & MySQL injections for example. It's a site for asking a question and learning, a down-vote is so discouraging to a new programmer.
