mrtnmcc··on Why do bees die when they sting you?
The mating process of the drone male bees (with suicidal semelparity) maybe has a more obvious (but similar?) answer in that they have served their role and want to maximize their reproductive effectiveness.

Certainly attaching your venom pump to a mammal will help discourage it now and in the future. Given average bee lifetimes are 3-4 weeks anyway, it's also not much of a sacrifice for the hive.

The genetic similarly of bees to their queen is higher (75%) than most species, so kinship theory may point to less individualistic behavior as well.

Expected to now be the brightest object in the night sky other than the moon.
mrtnmcc··on Cooling the Earth with a sunshade near the inner Lagrange point (2006)
Exactly, that seems underappreciated.

It seems you'd want to block infrared where most of the thermal energy is transferred, while letting the shorter wavelengths through for plants/plankton.

mrtnmcc··on Cooling the Earth with a sunshade near the inner Lagrange point (2006)
In control theory, something can be observable without being controllable
mrtnmcc··on Cooling the Earth with a sunshade near the inner Lagrange point (2006)
Wouldn't these sunshade concepts all reduce solar energy available to plants as well as total thermal radiation?

mrtnmcc··on Notice of termination of Twitter merger agreement
Might be able to make an argument based on Regression Towards the Mean and the fact Cramer picks are "extremes".
mrtnmcc··on Notice of termination of Twitter merger agreement
Cramer's advice is a decent guide if you always take the opposite opinion.
mrtnmcc··on The first high-yield, sub-penny plastic processor
By reducing gate count on the processor, they effectively will make the programs longer (more instructions to do the same thing), but it doesn't seem like they are counting memory here..

mrtnmcc··on The Math Myth (2016)
>> They [engineers] claimed never to have used anything beyond Excel and eighth grade level mathematics; never a trig function or even a log or exponential function!

As a counterpoint, I use math on a daily basis as a principal engineer (architecting SpaceX's Starlink). In particular: lots of geometry/trig, optimization theory, linear algebra, Fourier analysis, quaternions, probability/statistics, control theory, dynamic programming, numerical methods.

This is typically in the service of modeling physical systems, modulating or demodulation RF waveforms, and controlling or compensating for electrical circuits, orbital dynamics, etc..

The value of math is that it is an especially portable skill-- you can work in many fields and it still applies. I've worked so far in bio-sciences, chip design, and satellites / space. In each case the value of math was very high.

US citizens are indeed underrepresented in mathematical degrees. In graduate school at MIT, the vast majority of my peers were not US citizens (EECS department). It's great the best and brightest from around the world study here, the US government should try hard to incentivize them to stick around (green cards, etc).

mrtnmcc··on Millions of electric cars are coming. What happens to all the dead batteries?
This is a hard one to trade off, as the engine does need maintenance even if it isn't used and still limits the lifespan of the PHEV.

Even for commuting, having an oversized battery extends lifespan because of the reduced charge cycle per cell (and battery will generally last much longer than any engine).

I do like the range boost of the engine though. Especially when exploring new areas and not having a consistent route and supercharge routine. Although going back to the pump always reminds me why pure electric is the future.

(I've had both a Tesla and a Volt).

mrtnmcc··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
In China, the cultural revolution was largely seen as the destruction of their culture and the greatest blunder in their 3000yr history. They now look at mob and revolution mentality as the most dangerous thing to peace and prosperity. That's why the people support what we call 'government oppression'. They have had a different fortune when it comes to our revered revolutions

China has learned there is a different way to achieve peace, that is not based on war, but on shared values. Unfortunately we are threatening the people who could teach us the way.

mrtnmcc··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
Or use those resources to support all people across the world so they don't feel the need to resort to violence. Use it to investigate and reveal abusers (eg., oligarchs), to strengthen education and mechanisms of peaceful resolution.

Each generation must re-remember where we are at now--at the edge of self extinction. Lessons from a pre-nuclear age cannot guide us.

mrtnmcc··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
History became irrelevant after nuclear weapons. Words like 'enemy' are the real problem.
mrtnmcc··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
Putin is on the way down. At 70, time will surely sort him out. But the rest of the world needs to support the Russian people in building a more stable and inclusive political system. Change is possible. And we all have a vested interest.
mrtnmcc··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
This mindset doesn't apply anymore. Nobody to wipe up the blood after total nuclear extinction. Nobody to imagine a future. Nobody to wish we made a different choice. Nobody left.
mrtnmcc··on World military expenditure passes $2T for first time
Agree--Humanity loses because of this posturing, well before the bombs are flying.

mrtnmcc··on Twitter bans ads that contradict science on climate change
Worth remembering the scientific method relies on some sense of repeatable phenomena for idealized "experiment". Social science, medicine, astronomy, geology, earth science, each have their own axioms for what that means. (E.g., assume the universe is isotropic).

I don't think each of these are as solid as the other. Climate science is certainly less testable than say particle physics. Not that we shouldn't work together as humans to model, understand and keep our (only) planet stable as best we can.. but "scientific consensus" is less meaningful in this field.. used as a political word to motivate people at the expense of more nuanced understanding.

But like vaccines, it's probably better to act now before we understand it all.. (on the day before we go extinct).

mrtnmcc··on Twitter bans ads that contradict science on climate change
Kuhn and Popper may have something to say about that.
mrtnmcc··on Musk announces funding secured for Twitter buy
I suspect Elon wants Twitter data to train an AI/GPT-3. Also if you look at how he uses Twitter, he believes in the tweet resonance idea of being able to signal certain group or individuals with memes. He thinks that may be a key element in the future of human collective consciousness.
mrtnmcc··on Is growth linear, not exponential?
You can get an exponential growth if the time until the next technology decreases linearly with each technology.

For example the time until the next technology is 1/n, then the technologies per unit time increase exponentially.

This is true within a constant which is https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler%27s_constant

A justification for maybe why this is the right model is that the previous n technologies all help make the next technology possible in time ~1/n because they (n existing technologies) all contribute to innovating the next technology.

mrtnmcc··on Heated Debate Rises over Hints of Superconductivity Above Boiling Temperatures
May be relevant to theories about the Earth's core and magnetic field.
mrtnmcc··on Actuarial Life Table
By choosing someone who died in 2019, you've implicitly chosen from the lucky group of survivors. This is not representative of everyone born in 1939. That is the discrepancy.

If you add the current age to the remaining years of life, the total lifespan is monotonically increasing. This is reflecting the fact you are only looking at the expected age of an increasingly dwindling group of lucky survivors.

mrtnmcc··on Language of fungi derived from their electrical spiking activity
It's unclear from that source that the complex fungal network in the ant is in any way important for controlling ant behavior. It's only speculated.
mrtnmcc··on Language of fungi derived from their electrical spiking activity
I always figured it made the ant feel it is about to drown, so it seeks high ground instinctively.
