mrspandex··on Poll: Should HN display comment scores?
I like the idea of not tying the karma score to the user, but that does help identify good users from bad. Maybe cap the karma the user can get from a single comment to something low - say 3, but let the comment itself show the real number of votes.
mrspandex··on These are things in PHP which make me sad
"#41 Cannot create a final abstract class" is borderline too
mrspandex··on Don't shell out big bucks -- lots of open source BI suites are available
I agree, having the source and being able to fix a bug myself is far more valuable than having big blue tell me its not a problem, then me proving it is, then spend months waiting for a promised fix, then the fix breaking two other things...
mrspandex··on Facebook To Launch Music Service With Spotify
"...it will only be available for Facebook users in countries where Spotify has a presence, excluding the all-important United States."

I guess I assumed since Facebook is based in the US this meant that Spotify would be available in the US too, but on second thought, I'm sure Facebook is big everywhere.

mrspandex··on Sony: The Company That Kicked the Hornet's Nest
The attack on Sony was not against the company, it was against its customers. I'm sure this will damage Sony in a huge way, but I have 0 respect for the people who did this.
mrspandex··on CSS builder for shadows, backgrounds, and borders
I visited in Opera, which is not supported. But I was very pleased that the site didn't just block me for not being an approved browser, but actually tested for the existence of a feature. Bravo!
mrspandex··on The Year Ahead for Google App Engine
I really wish they would allow the $9 fee to be paid automatically if my app reached quota rather than making me plan for it. The beauty of appengine for me was that I didn't have to think about scaling. I guess I'll now have to pay for that privilege.
mrspandex··on Facebook Takes 31.2% of the U.S. Ad Display Market
I have to say, Facebook ads have been spookily relevant to my interests and I click them almost regularly. When I'm on Facebook, I'm just looking to waste time anyway, so an interesting ad might get a click. Google search ads are usually for sites I already knew about and visited.
mrspandex··on Sony blames 'Anonymous' for data theft
"They released a statement via YouTube last month saying that while the group's organizers had not stolen the data, it was possible some members of the group were involved in the matter."

Just about anyone could claim to be part of "Anonymous" and submit a video saying just about anything. If you can't verify something, you probably shouldn't be including it in the news.

mrspandex··on The traveling German carpenters
Did anyone else read that title as "time traveling German carpenters?"

Does the internet make this less relevant for those in the software field?

mrspandex··on Music industry will force licenses on Amazon Cloud Player—or else
This article mentions a Google product in development that would "scan a user's computer and automatically add any tracks that Google has licensed to that user's online locker" and an Apple product that would allow "unlimited music redownloads and streams to iOS devices" and then implies that since these would require licenses, so would Amazon.

I think there's a fine line that's crossed when you have to upload your own bits rather than re-use their bits.

mrspandex··on Skype 5 for Mac
If the mac version is like Windows, there is a row of icons at the bottom of the call screen. One of them is a chat bubble, which opens a chat with the caller.

EDIT: I should read the article - it has this in there.

mrspandex··on The iPad is 99% more open than any other computer
Now, I am a fairly young person myself, but the author is in 8th grade. I'm not sure he's qualified to talk about changes in the market over a few years.
mrspandex··on Zferral.com: lean marketing for your business
The text does not contrast enough. And, although fairly popular, I don't like the white drop shadow thing at all.
mrspandex··on Microsoft Takes Legal Action Against Barnes & Noble over Android
http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoft_on_the_issues/archive/2... has some more details
mrspandex··on Bon Jovi says Steve Jobs is killing the music business
I have to say that people seem to take fewer risks on albums now and just download the songs they hear on the radio. But as soon as someone does decide they like something, the process is much, much faster. I think that will wear off as people realize how much more is out there than they hear every day.

I think Emusic had this problem solved by giving you expiring download credits that forced you to take a chance on something you likely never heard or lose your credits.

mrspandex··on Very impressive CSS3 demo: CSS3 Planetarium
Also doesn't work in FF 3.6 or Opera 11...
mrspandex··on Sleep is more important than food
People say that you'll die... faster than without water but we know it's just a lie Scare your son, scare your daughter
mrspandex··on EFF takes a look at the 2011 Patent Reform Act
From what the EFF has to say, this seems to be an encouraging direction for the patent system. I wonder if some non profit could be funded to monitor and oppose obvious software patents in that initial 9 month window.
mrspandex··on IActionable: Free game mechanics for startups
Pretty awesome HN has a post on the front page by a fellow Neumontonian
