mrmlz··on The World Has Passed ‘Peak Agricultural Land’
No it is not completely wrong.

It is very dependent on geography. The discussion regarding beef/cattle/meat always takes some "global-scale-scope" which is useless since the topology, soil, water etc. is something that almost exclusively determines what is suitable to grow.

You could not, how much you wanted convert the gracing pastures in Sweden to any high-yield farm.

mrmlz··on The World Has Passed ‘Peak Agricultural Land’
Eh. Most cattle in Sweden is fed with grass or grass-equivalents. I.e. stuff that humans don't want/can't eat.

Now the idiotic argument that is often heard is "well, if we didn't grow grass we could grow something humans want, like.. soybeans". And the answer is no, we couldn't because the land isn't suitable for growing those high-value crops. If it was the case the farmers would be all over it.

Horrible link, but it shows that close to 45%(?) is used for "vall/grönfoder" and "betesmark" i.e. grass, grass-equivalents and gracing pastures.

All these studies always mix things up.

Everyone who reduces their caloric intake below their expenditure will lose weight.

Those that try to eat their daily intake in pure sugar will 1) feel like absolute garbage and lie in a comatose state further reducing their expenditure 2) overeat.

Those that eat something at least close to being actual food. Like.. a potato that hasn't been fried in palmoil will feel full and less like a bag of shit.

Well Harvard Medical should probably take a trip to the physics department and do some book learning..

But I´ll give her the benefit of a doubt that the quote is pulled from a larger reasoning.

Hah, to be fair I am somewhat of a Negative Nancy from time to time ;)

I think Mercedes has a reasonably sensible game-plan as far as I know. They currently have Level-3 on some highways in Germany which is still freaking hard to achieve, but still a narrow enough scope that you might be able to pull it off.

Time will tell, my bet is its still 10+ years off.

As someone who has worked for almost a decade with safety critical software, system design and functional safety analyses (both aerospace and automotive) etc. I don't think I ever met anyone who believed they would be anywhere near FSD/Level-5 what-have-you in the timeframe they presented.

The only ones I met who thought so was managers and software developers and ML-people, i.e. people who has never in their life seen the level of effort it actually takes to get something qualified for RTCA or other safety standards.

That is correct for a lot of aircraft systems as well, especially in the design/requirements phase the actual implementation might vary of course. I've personally used Simulink a lot for control systems.

I.e. hydraulics, fuel transfers, ECS etc.

mrmlz··on Aviation Safety Whistleblower Report on 737 Max [pdf]
Yes of course there is fault handling! That's one of the hard things about safety critical sw is that you actually have to deal with everything.. Lettings things "fail" or be "undefined" isn't really an option.

E.g. Mach is derived from multiple sensors so you have a first layer of redundancy there, then if all fails (and you can detect it ofc..) you'd probably start some kind of dead-reckoning and issue WARNINGS accordingly to the pilot and/or connected systems that change its behavior to a more conservative one.

There is almost always some kind of "safe state" that wouldn't depend on the input signals at all. It would obviously negatively affect the performance of the aircraft and most likely reduce its operational envelope.

Pilot action would be required, i.e. reduce altitude, reduce AoA, reduce air speed etc. LAND ASAP etc. :)

mrmlz··on Jellyfin: A Free Software Media System
Well, for the longest time, like a decade+, there was no point to spend the time unpacking the files. I could watch them with unrar| mplayer without any problems. Then XBMC came along and everything continued to work without a hitch, it isn't until now the need to unpack them has actually presented itself so i of course see this as a step back and degradation in my personal user experience.

But i guess times are changing, kids these days etc. :)

I know way to little about the stuff, but if you want to be my personal hero you are more than welcome on tryin to solve it :)

I think that summarizes the current status afaik!

We got a Samsung The Frame this Black Friday, which uses Tizen. It is our first really smart tv, the other we got is a 2012 Panasonic plasma.. Anyway, i'm quite pleasently suprised with the response and UI interactions.

I still have tonnes of .rar. Exclusively for legacy reasons (you can google why .rar exists), sure i could spend the time extracting everything, or continue using Kodi which is my current solution.

I don't think the license is the issue, Kodi has solved it with a external dep if i'm not mistaken. The reason is more related to your last sentence. They don't get it, and thus doesn't want to spend time on solving it. Which is their prerogative of course, but it still annoys _me_ :)

mrmlz··on Jellyfin: A Free Software Media System
My biggest gripe with Jellyfin, Emby, Plex etc. is the lack of .rar-support.

It annoys me to no end. Kodi has had support for ages (back in the XBMC-days) but the feature-request and bountys seems to fall on deaf ears.

Other than that i've found the meta-data to be "better" in emby/jellfin compared to Kodi.
