VC mindset-

1. Raise a lot of money from LPs (Rich People or Institutions).

2. Get ~3% out of the fund for operations and then for every successful exit.

3. Fund startups/industries that others are investing into to create a cycle.

Now what happens when all the startups are doing bad? Can't deploy capital? You can't return the cash to LPs saying "OOPs didn't find best startups to fund"

Instead you go, "See everyone is investing in AI, so we are also doing it!", LPs happy to be part of a trend and thinks themselves smart while you raise more for your fund. :)

Everyone is doing it, first it was the search engines doing crawling now LLMs just directly scrapping.

They can just open subsidiaries and use that to go around them. Also the big guys do donate a lot of money.

The real reason might be VCs. The companies going closed source have raised from VCs and they are pushed to more and more growth just changing licenses and taking control.

I guess most companies now a days just say open-source to get some initial traction, nut no worries it will get a fork like redis did if they change the license.

Isn't it to much for just calculating the number of token?

I am really interested in a LLM router that can track the usage and tokens used to measure the cost and put int rate limits. What this will do is help keep cost down even while using multiple LLMs.

I think this project will be a great starting point.

Really good. I am actually using js-tiktokken and wish there was a package to handle all the other LLMs also but still something I can work with.
