mrbig4545··on The Last Line Effect
Copy and pasting blocks? That's a red flag right there, remember that next time you're doing it, and think how you could do it without the copy and pasting
mrbig4545··on Hackers and Designers Summer Academy in Amsterdam
Yep, way to help out with getting women into technology.
mrbig4545··on What part of “No, Totally” don't you understand?
I can't say I've noticed this before, which leads me to think it's probably an American colloquialism, but that's my default response to these kinds of things.

Could be that I've just not noticed it.

mrbig4545··on In praise of the mechanical keyboard
I invested in a Microsoft ergonomic natural 4000 keyboard. Probably the best thing I ever did, now i have significantly less wrist pain at the end of the day.

It did take a bit of getting used to though, but not that much, only a day or so.

Anyway, I used to have an old mechanical keyboard. Sure it made a nice click, but that's about it, I don't really get the whole "mechanical keyboards are the best" thing

mrbig4545··on Ubiquiti Networks is creatively violating the GPL
yep, it bounces
mrbig4545··on Ubiquiti Networks is creatively violating the GPL
it's more than I ever got out out Coolpad or Mediatek. i can't even find a valid email address for Coolpad to ask for android kernel source :(
mrbig4545··on Fake Amazon Tech Book Reviews Are Hurting My Book
they should give more weight to the "verified purchase" reviews, I might even go as far as to say disallow reviews unless you actually bought the product, it would stop a lot of this, and the stupid review bandwagon that people seem to jump on
mrbig4545··on Sexism in Tech: Don’t Ask Me Unless You’re Ready to Call Someone a Whistleblower
I can't help but think this is a problem in america and not a problem in tech. Over here (UK) I've never seen or heard of anything like this.

I don't know, maybe I'm wrong and I've just never seen it.

Either way, it's not on and it needs to stop

mrbig4545··on HTTP Strict Transport Security Comes to Internet Explorer
You really can't think of a technical reason?

Now I am not involved with IE at all, but i think it's safe to assume that they are most likely using new APIs which are specific to that platform.

Now that's not an excuse, as they could write in fallbacks for platforms that don't have this, but it's definitely a valid reason.

it's a reason, but it's not a valid one. if it was then no one would write software that works on older windows versions.

mrbig4545··on HTTP Strict Transport Security Comes to Internet Explorer
It would be much better progress if they could use the latest IE on whatever version of windows, rather than being forced develop for the lowest common denominator.

Chrome has it right, it's always the latest version, and firefox is better than it used to be, but even then they didn't say "sorry, you need the latest windows to use this version, here, have this 4 year old version instead"

It's ridiculous, and I can't think of one valid technical reason for it

mrbig4545··on HTTP Strict Transport Security Comes to Internet Explorer
True, but after that I'll still be stuck on IE9, and the trend will continue.
mrbig4545··on HTTP Strict Transport Security Comes to Internet Explorer
I don't know either, but that's HN for you. meh

It's a shame though, because the new IE isn't so bad, but while I have to develop for IE8 it's as good as useless :(

mrbig4545··on HTTP Strict Transport Security Comes to Internet Explorer
until it's not longer tied to windows versions, ie will always be a problem
mrbig4545··on Why Perl Didn't Win
Define won.

This is the way I see it. Perl5 is still being actively developed, perl6 is coming along nicely, cpan more awesome than ever, and there's still work for a perl dev.

If everyone was using the same language, then we'd all suffer because no one would be getting the new ideas.

Competition keeps things healthy.

mrbig4545··on The Mid-Career Crisis of the Perl Programmer
the people who get paid the most are those who can call them experts in the field. you can't do that if you tinker in every field.

pick something, work on it, find work doing it and get paid the most.

if the work goes away and you need to pick a new field, then what you've learned isn't wasted, you'll still know how to solve problems, just you won't know the idiosyncrasies or the eco system as well as you did. but you can learn that pretty fast.

point being, learn one thing and stick at it, that way you'll get more money.

mrbig4545··on By Making a Game Out of Rejection, a Man Conquers Fear
what is it with gamifaction? I don't get it - it doesn't motivate me at all, infact it probably has the opposite effect.
mrbig4545··on Finish one thing today
I finished at least 3 things today. 4 if you count making the bed...

why is this site trying to make me lazy?

and if I don't want to finish something, then I won't. I'm not a machine, I want to have some days off, usually not enough.

but when I can, I enjoy spending a whole day on the sofa doing nothing. you should try it, it's nice

mrbig4545··on What does it take to run a web app with 5K – 10K users?
In my experience running https://thisaintnews.com the hardest part is getting and keeping users. It would probably be easier if I did some marketing, but that's too much like work! Still, it's not doing bad for something that's been around for 6 years, and hasn't been worked on in a year.

The second problem is motivation, after a certain amount of time, it becomes far less fun and much more of a burden, at which point you have to decide if you'll power through, give up, or quit totally.

The rest is just a software/hardware problem, and easily dealt with when needed.

As for the load, it's not that busy, but not that quiet for what it is, (http://stats.thisaintnews.com) and it runs on a cheap server from http://www.kimsufi.com/uk/, has a Xeon(R) CPU E3-1225 V2 @ 3.20GHz, 16Gb ram and 2x 1tb hdd, unlimited bandwidth and 1gbps link. It only costs about £25/month iirc.

mrbig4545··on Please Do Not Be a One Trick Pony
jack of all trades, master of none.

no thanks, i'll stick to being an expert (and getting paid accordingly) in one field, and adjust when needed.

you don't get brick layers randomly learning carpet fitting and welding "just incase"

mrbig4545··on Why developers hate being interrupted
I've never found it to be a problem, I guess I must be good at context switching. But then again I'm usually working on 4 or 5 things at a time anyway, so a few interruptions don't seem that bad! I like the break, and then there's the bonus of solving something by not thinking about it.
mrbig4545··on Another Theory to Explain 10X Programmers
in my opinion, it's all about time and motivation. I have neither, therefore i'm not a 10x programmer. but if i did, i could churn stuff out no worries.

but instead of that i spend a lot of time procrastinating and working like a 1x programmer in 1/10th of the time.

mrbig4545··on A new Microsoft browser?
ie9 is available for vista. although in practice, ie8 is the minimum we have to support
mrbig4545··on A new Microsoft browser?
lets hope they make it windows version agnostic, that way we can all start supporting ie12, instead of being shackled to ie9
mrbig4545··on Show HN: One click image optimization for GitHub
Even one small paragraph will help, something like, "When you click on the button, it will spin up a bunch of workers (1 for every 10 images). These will optimize the filesize of your images in parallel, and then push the changes back up to a branch and open a pull request for you to review.

There's no limit on the number of images - it can optimize hundreds quite quickly - 50 is the number of parallel workers you can have"

(i stole this off another of your comments and added filesize after optimise)

mrbig4545··on Show HN: One click image optimization for GitHub
i'm not sure what it is, or why i would want it. or even what kind of optimising it does

i'm not complaining, just suggesting that you should work on your homepage to make that crystal clear, it'll help with people who might want to use it but don't know it yet

mrbig4545··on Ask HN: Do you prefer to learn by watching videos or by reading books/articles?
depends. i mostly learn by doing. like cars/physical things, i get some tools out, and go to work. might take a while, but i always get there and usually learn a lot in the process.

same with computer stuff, although then there's a lot of looking at examples as well
