mrarjen··on 61% of “Entry-Level” Jobs Require 3+ Years of Experience
Best way to get a job is through networking with people, I had a year of unemployment and after sending out hundreds of applications I ended up getting asked by a friend to do some work for him instead.

In a matter of fact all jobs I had, have basically been thanks to people I know who worked at those companies.

mrarjen··on Dear Mark Zuckerberg (2012)
> Am I really alone in thinking FB was cancer from the get go?

Not at all! Most surprisingly my parents are the ones who looked at this and instantly followed their guts once they felt that something was off and removed their fb accounts years ago.

Still, the majority won't fully understand any of this until all their private photo's start circulating on the web.

mrarjen··on Facebook denies it collects call and SMS data from phones without permission
I always enjoy these lawyer correct texts by facebook and how we all know it's been going on for a long time now. If only the general public would suddenly all figure this out!

It's 50/50 now if everyone will forget this next month, or if the new trend continues to remove facebook.

mrarjen··on Facebook has suspended all social accounts of Cambridge Analytica whistleblower
Blowing the whistle seems to be the fastest way to get an account removed now a days. Just getting the media to pick it up is the tricky part.
mrarjen··on Google will ban all cryptocurrency-related advertising
The whole cryptocurrency is quite tainted atm, I'm pleased they do this, if only to root out the bad players. Perhaps at a later time when things are more stable they will go back to offering these ads.
mrarjen··on Automatic Machine Knitting of 3D Meshes
Indeed, this kind of reminded me a little of the Westworld robot printers. But having a program individually calculate all the orientations and determine the best strength is a just as much of an art.
mrarjen··on Continuing frequency deviation in the Continental European Power System
Only device I have is my oven that uses this kind of clock... but usually only winter/summer time alters this irrelevant to begin with. Not the mention a power outage sometimes and then months before it's set again.

Then again, what kind of more dependent systems or companies would have negative effects due to this? Besides bedside alarm clocks.

mrarjen··on Amazon's policies promote counterfeiting
Really enjoy this post and the reactions of it. I also have been looking around on Amazon for small furniture and some other small products, but as a consumer, a great deal of research is needed to detect fakes or sub par products.

If you know what you want to buy, you are indeed best off buying directly from the product creators site and not get tempted by far cheaper alternatives amazon suggests... Birkenstock is a great example of this where it escalated https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2017/12/22/birkenstock-...

mrarjen··on Chinese capital dangles carrots to lure foreign talent to its Silicon Valley
Yea that's also true, in Asia, the western education is perceived as far superior to theirs.
mrarjen··on Chinese capital dangles carrots to lure foreign talent to its Silicon Valley
Likely because they are still in college, and China would rather want the leaders in their fields to work for them instead, and also teach the newly graduated to take it from there?
mrarjen··on The Car of the Future Will Sell Your Data
> The car of the future will sell your data and also be vulnerable to hackers

These hackable cars are not of the future, even many of today's cars can be quite easily hacked with some knowledge and the right tools. Luckily this doesn't seem to happen yet as far as I'm aware.

And I fully agree on repairing old cars and the passion that can be put in these machines. It's in a sense sad that cars like this don't get made anymore, but on the other side it's better for the planet.

mrarjen··on Facebook’s next project: American inequality
And in the act displacing a large amount of people that would have been able to assist him in this study?
mrarjen··on UK government should give £10K to every citizen under 55, a report suggests
Exactly, this article is just one big disappointment when you read the title and actual article. It's basically some extra money to help it's citizens for the short term.
mrarjen··on Magic Leap One Video – Diffractive Waveguides Confirmed
Let's hope we won't have to physically move around, and it's slightly more like Altered Carbon VR :)
mrarjen··on Magic Leap One Video – Diffractive Waveguides Confirmed
Getting this whole "silicon valley tv show" vibe here, where it's the VR company that gets to much hype. Almost seems like they are too deep in and need to keep going hoping it will be accepted in the market.

Still think AR has a lot more potential than VR in the long run. Just need to get that "Yes!" moment where the technology has a perfect fit and use for it.

mrarjen··on A British couple who took on Google and cost it £2.1B
This is certainly a proper question to ask! Semi related but, I have some experience getting funding from the EU for innovative projects, the cost of work needed to acquire this funding was nearly to the point where it wasn't worth it for any small companies to even attempt. So I can understand that this level of justice is only to be achieved by the wealthy and resourceful parties.
mrarjen··on A British couple who took on Google and cost it £2.1B
After looking at Foundem I can see why this should not be displayed to searchers. I feel like I'm back in the early days of the web!

And only the rich get richer in these cases. ;)

mrarjen··on Americans are spending less on clothing
"Going Dutch" also similar. But that's due to some dates would be offended if the man pays for the meals. But this is kind of drifting off topic :)
mrarjen··on Americans are spending less on clothing
True, but quality wise it's far lower in the Netherlands than it is in the US from my experience. Plus now a days it seems most people buy from the Primark, as it's ridiculously cheap...
mrarjen··on Americans are spending less on clothing
I remember the thrift stores in the US are full of second hand clothing that might as well have been all new or maybe worn once. And as a Dutch person I was amazed how much perfectly fine clothing was disposed of. Especially since I usually wear things till they break in some manner.

Actually there was a lot more well fitting clothing (mainly shirts) in the thrift places than in the actual clothing stores. Not to mention pants... for a Dutch person looking for pants in a US store is a no go apparently, it's all far to tiny...

mrarjen··on Where Dutch directness comes from
The people I have offended this way is crazy... it's not meant as an insult, but as the article states "what do you want" is already shocking, so just imagine if anything more direct is asked. :(
mrarjen··on Nutella 'riots' spread across French supermarkets
Thanks for the share, this is even more interesting than a small scale black Friday. :)
mrarjen··on Facebook is banning all ads promoting cryptocurrencies
"Because they are mostly scam ads", haven't seen many non scam ads or highly incorrect/false usage of material on facebook for years. This is more of a thing for them to properly fix. They might as well ban most ads I was seeing at least.
mrarjen··on How Apple fumbled a five-year lead in voice control
I'd still like to see someone make a "HER" type of OS even just as a prototype/demo piece touching new functionalities. Currently Siri indeed doesn't offer much, but even Google and Alexa aren't yet at the level that I'm likely to use it for much more than set a timer or put on some music in the long run...
mrarjen··on Why American men are getting less marriageable
Perhaps you and your friends group fall out of the majority? But I do know there is a certain pressure from parents and personal ideals when it comes to money that are still very present when it comes to dating or choosing a partner. Even if it's only subconscious...

Most of my friends and relatives (NL) don't even get married, but rather have a partnership agreement that is pretty much the same status as married but less hard to unbind or set up.

mrarjen··on The U.S. Can No Longer Hide from Its Deep Poverty Problem
It's only a fraction of the people that are homeless in CA, but a great result none the less. Here is an article of just LA. Seems quite out of control compared with Utah. :(

mrarjen··on Code Less, Think More… Incrementally
This sounds like a real case of the client knows everything better, and only hired you so they could let you know they are better at your job.

If only we could get those years of wasted development back.

mrarjen··on The U.S. Can No Longer Hide from Its Deep Poverty Problem
Yea, I read that most homeless seem to head to CA because it's where the money is...

Here in NL we have some homeless, but also lots of government systems in place to offer housing and incentives to possibly work or get schooling.

In the end this is actually cheaper, as to prevent crime and what not. Not sure how this would work in the US.

mrarjen··on Bitcoin + Lightning = win?
I think some coins main difference is the ease to work with in creating applications and contracts. Plus in some cases coins like Neo that are build around China's regulations are likely to stay and improve in new ways.

Also less energy consumption and ease of use are big points. Many alt coins will eventually fail I think, but at this moment they seem mostly linked to how well Bitcoin is doing, so if Bitcoin goes up or down, so will many alt coins at first.

mrarjen··on Guide to $1M Eve Online Battle Tomorrow
That first comment on Reddit kinda sums it up... Huge hype and letdown at the same time. But a great write-up non the less! Looking forward to hear more about this.
