mpreda··on The Effects of Noise on Health (2022)
Maybe it would be prudent to set it to less loud pending a definite answer to your question.
mpreda··on CATL has announced a new “condensed” battery with 500 Wh/kg
I on the other hand, I applaud the politicians who had the guts to push the ICE car sales ban against the push-back of the established cars manufacturers.

ICE cars are such a nuisance in cities by polluting the air. I look forward to a time when my children will be able to enjoy clean air in the cities.

What are the symptomps of your illness? (if you're comfortable with sharing). And how do you "reduce ER stress"?
mpreda··on Electricity Prices by Country
To think there were nuclear reactors already built and running perfectly fine in Germany. That were closed down presumably for ecological reasons. Burning coal and natural gas instead.
mpreda··on The effects of wealth on (Swedish) marriage and fertility
> I would have ten children if I had affordable childcare and additional help around the house. It is clear to me.

Why would you have ten children? what is the need, or the benefit, or the reason.

mpreda··on I don't like making the best things
One of my favorite English words is: kakorrhaphiophobia

Abnormal fear of failure

Kakorrhaphiophobia is an abnormal, persistent, irrational fear of failure. In clinical cases, it's debilitating: the fear of even the most subtle failure or defeat is so intense that it restricts a person from doing anything at all.

mpreda··on Morning exposure to deep red light improves declining eyesight
A related question: how to get the deepest-red frequency on the monitor (while reducing the interference from other frequencies)?

The first step would be to use red color (let's say, RGB=0xff0000). Is there anything to do to lower the frequency? Would reducing the brightness help?

Or is it just simply: set it to full-red, full-brightness?

mpreda··on Genesis Filed for Bankruptcy
That's a joke BTW. It's the song "Jesus He Knows Me" by Genesis, about amassing large amounts of money by misleading honest people. At 2:59 in the official video is the quote "You can call my toll free number, 1-555-GEN-ESIS" which I find, as the overall lyrics, great.

Well, what has Hacker News become that one has to explain even the jokes..

mpreda··on R49081 Is Prime
Firstly, this prime number is not so big compared to other big prime numbers, such as e.g. the largest known prime, 2^82589933 - 1, which has about 82 million bits.

About the why.. well when we'll meet the aliens, for sure it'll come down to "who has the largest prime..", and we don't want to disappoint.

mpreda··on R49081 Is Prime
For the mersenne project (searching for prime numbers that are 110 million bits in size) GPUs are quite efficient.

One of the algorithms used, called PRP (probable prime), which uses the reciprocal of Fermat's little theorem (a^(p-1)==1 mod p if p is prime) involves computing 3^p mod p (where p is a 110million bits number). This is called "modular exponentiation", and is done efficiently with FFTs (Fast Fourrier Transform, used to implement multiplication, thus squaring).

The FFT of 110Mbits can be implemented efficiently on GPUs. The key for keeping the hot data in GPU registers or caches is "locality of data access". Although the FFT algorithm is non-local by excellence (has a tendency to access all the data all the time), it can be split into "blocks" which have a smaller hot-data size. And this allows efficient GPU implementations.

The problem with R49081 may be that it's a small number, thus hard to fill all the processing units of the GPU with the amount of parallel work the algo offers at this size. Another problem may be that the algorithm involving eliptic-curves is more complex, thus more work is needed to express it in GPU terms.

mpreda··on Of Dharma and Doom: A translation revives the ending of the Mahabharata
"Lord of Light" by Roger Zelazny is a Science-Fiction novel using Hinduism/Buddhist philosophy as background in an intriguing way.

His followers called him Mahasamatman and said he was a god. He preferred to drop the Maha- and the -atman, however, and called himself Sam. He never claimed to be a god, but then he never claimed not to be a god.

qt-creator is a nice open-source IDE:

https://github.com/qt-creator/qt-creator

They offer binary releases, but it's also possible to compile from source without too much trouble. Written in C++, it's pretty snappy. Supports meson.

mpreda··on NASA’s new shortcut to fusion power
From the article: Electron screening makes it seem as though the deuterons are fusing at a temperature of 11 million °C. In reality, the metal lattice remains much cooler than that, although it heats up somewhat from room temperature as the deuterons fuse.

Sounds pretty much the same as room temperature to me. Also the pictures with the experimental setup suggest that the glass does not melt, which is pretty cool.

mpreda··on The Eyes Have It (1953)
"A Scanner Darkly" is dedicated to his many close friends that suffered or died as a result of drug use. I think there is this heartbreaking dedication at the end of the novel, with the names of his friends and how they ended.

Yet the book is full of subtle humor, and a profound understanding of individuals' tragedy at the same time.

There is a great movie made after the novel, with the same name. The movie does capture the spirit of the book, even as switching the medium, a noteworthy achievement.

Could you please share a bit more information about the insulin (kind, amount) you use during the keto diet? and how did you discover the right amount of insulin?

It seems to me, if one would let the insulin slip too low, one would be in danger of ketoacidosis, isn't that so?

Also, do you drink any alcoholic drinks?

From the linked page, for "Senior Backend Engineer": San Francisco, CA or Remote in AZ, CO, DC, FL, MA, MI, MN, NC, NY, OR, TX, UT, or WA

So it's not really REMOTE, it's remote in a subset of US states.

ROCm provides a good OpenCL 2.x implementation targeting AMD GCN. The compiler/optimizer is clang-based. It is open-source. One great thing is that ROCm OpenCL supports GCN assembly in the OpenCL source, which is handy in some corner-cases that are not properly handled by the optimizer.

What is the algorithm for verifying the VDF output?

mpreda··on Money can buy happiness, but not unconditionally
A flat consumption tax would be regressive if the two extremes (rich vs. poor) would buy the same goods; but they don't. The very poor buy cheap food, the very rich buy diamonds and services ("dog walking", "garden design", "personal trainer"). Not to mention the two buying different kinds of habitation, in different locations, at very different price-points.
mpreda··on Ask HN: What's your favorite elegant/beautiful algorithm?
The "binary heap" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_heap is a very useful and extremely simple algorithm; it is in my toolbox of fundamental algorithms.
