Just like Wikipedia, people follow changes. If there is vandalism, it often gets reverted within a few hours. If there's a mistake (relation broken for example) it can take a few hours longer to fix.
mpol··on Ask HN: Best way to archive 25 years of emails
Personally I prefer to have email history online in the form of a local IMAP server like Dovecot. It is saved in maildir format where each email is a separate file.

I can then use an email client to move emails and folders between accounts.

Make sure to have backups. I assume you currently don't have a backup, if it sits in gmail.

That is what Dacia is to Renault, the tech from the previous model. Still, Renault is vastly outselling Dacia.
mpol··on Linux on Older Hardware: The Complete Revival Guide
I had never heard of it, but checking it, I see MGLRU is enabled by default on my kernel (Mageia 10 with 6.18.xx). Are there distros where this is not enabled? Especially the ones mentioned in the blogpost? In that case it would need a recompile of the kernel, right? Or send in a bugreport to the distro.
mpol··on Measles surge in Utah sparks fears US could undo decades of progress
In Europe we actively pushed the crazies to emigrate to the US. We had so many crazy religious people that we got tired of them. They went to the US and we thought we got rid of them, but now they are back with a vengeance.
mpol··on Canada to order military plane fleet from Sweden in shift from US suppliers
Those are facts.

They do not mean that the people who ordered them today are wanting them today. If you need them in 10 years time, you need to order them today. It can easily change, if a flight company doesnt want to do business with Boeing or Airbus, they can cancel their pre-orders. Then the pre-order list might shrink really fast.

mpol··on GrapheneOS fixes Android VPN leak Google refused to patch
You could wait it out for a bit. There is work underway to support more phone hardware. Which brand was a bit up for speculation.
mpol··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
It's not just the applications, the installer doesn't even start up with 1GiB of memory. With 2GiB of memory it does start up. You could (well, I would :) ) blame it on the Gnome desktop, but it is very different from what I would have expected.

I just tested this with 25.10 desktop, default gnome. With 24.04 LTS it doesn't even start up with 2GiB.

mpol··on Jolla on track to ship new phone with Sailfish OS, user-replaceable battery
> Is there any hope for using the responsive libadwaita programs from the Mobile Linux space?

Currently not, if I understand correctly. There are plans to update or rewrite the Wayland compositor. If all goes well it should support GTK programs and I assume libadwaita too.

mpol··on Jolla on track to ship new phone with Sailfish OS, user-replaceable battery
@charcircuit

Sailfish is more like GNU/Linux, that is the OS in this context. For Jolla that is less code to maintain themselves then what Google maintains in Android/Linux. Hard forking Android/Linux looks to be quite a big bite to chew on.

Did GrapheneOS even exist in 2012? There is history at play here, they are still building forward from the Nokia Linux phones.

Also, what's up with all the sour grapes from people who use or develop GrapheneOS? There seems to be a general force dismissing Sailfish as insecure, without ever explaning how. Can't we just be friends in a de-googled world? Are people from Graphene feeling insecure about Sailfish as competition? It feels to me like infighting in small churches. It turns me off from ever considering GrapheneOS before I even looked into it.

mpol··on Jolla phone – a full-stack European alternative
1. A company needs a positive cashflow to keep existing.

2. Closed parts of Sailfish are being opened up slowly (There are new owners).

3. The tablet was in 2015, 11 years ago.

4. They are not Russia owned anymore, but Finnish now.

mpol··on Jolla phone – a full-stack European alternative
You're probably responding because of the Jolla tablet :)

To be fair, the Jolla tablet was in 2015, more than 10 years ago. Most probably, many of the people working at Jolla are not the same as then. Also, if you read carefully all the announcements and communication from Jolla, you can easily see they have learned from that crowdfunding affair. This is not the same offer, not in a long mile.

mpol··on What Is Stoicism?
In a sense that book is more about selfhelp, and misses some parts of Stoicism.

An interesting book which is more complete but still readable is Stoic Notes written by Rymke Wiersma, translated in English here: https://modernstoicism.com/a-free-book-stoic-notes-by-rymke-...

mpol··on TÜV Report 2026: Tesla Model Y has the worst reliability of all 2022–2023 cars (2025)
Don't all cars in the Netherlands have at least a small checkup before inspection?

I once had a Fiat Panda from 1984, 20 years old by then. It had a small checkup and maintenance, then went for the inspection. It passed, but was highlighted for inspection from the controlling organizing. The mechanic, owner of the shop, started getting really nervous about losing his license, asking, is the car allright, is it really allright? And it passed inspection again.

mpol··on European Alternatives
Wero is coming. Currently it is only available in a few countries.
mpol··on 10 years of personal finances in plain text files
Way too complicated for me :)

I just have 1 text file with monthly data. Each month is on a separate line, with only 5 columns (expanded below).

  1.date 2.saldo 3.savings 4.delta 5.special income / outcome (heading line)
  1 31 january 2026
  2 500
  3 2500
  4 -80
  5 dinner -50, concert - 30, sales +80, trousers -80, etcetera
Where the date is the last day of the month that I need to make (the next day there is income, for me it's 19th, not 31th). Saldo is my bank account that day. Savings are, well, savings in a separate account. delta is the sum of special income and outcome. row 5 is all special income and expenses. Groceries are not listed, I need them every month anyway.
mpol··on Nokia N900 Necromancy
There is the Gemini PDA from 2018 which has a physical keyboard. I heard it was mostly a disappointment.

There was another phone with keyboard around the same time, but I forgot the name. That was claimed to be very much in the spirit of the N950 and its cancelled follow-up, the Nokia Lauta.

All with Sailfish, the spiritual successor of Meamo/Meego from Nokia.

mpol··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
The Open Sourcing? There is more about it on the forum for Sailfish with phase 1, the weather app, notes app and a few other bits:

https://forum.sailfishos.org/t/open-sourcing-proceeding/2468...

Then there is community news category with updates, but it's a bit haphazard and ongoing in this context:

https://forum.sailfishos.org/c/community-news/25

The Camera app, Gallery app, Nexcloud accounts and other accounts components are open sourced and on github. There is now talk about Silica, the Wayland compositor. It hasn't been updated well in recent years and there is talk about moving it to Weston or Wlroots, while also supporting xdg-shell for GTK applications.

mpol··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
It was mainly the investors that didn't want to move. Many things were stagnant that needed moving. Now that the investors are gone there is a chance to move things, and slowly things are moving into open sourcing their software.
mpol··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
It uses Bluez for bluetooth connections. Or maybe that's what you meant ;) Bluetooth is a hack anyway.
mpol··on Jolla Phone Pre-Order
In 2013 they released the Jolla 1, a phone with custom hardware and Linux software. In 2015 they tried again with a tablet, but it failed on the side of hardware production and the company became insolvent.

In 2017 there came investors, among others ROS Telecom, a Russion telecom provider. They pivoted to only providing software, mainly on Sony phones. That is still ongoing.

Since the Russia - Ukraine war the Russion investors went MIA. The Finnish people from Jolla started a new company and had all assets moved to that company. They are now trying to rebuild the company and apparently extend into hardware again, even though the PCB design is off the shelf.

I have been a user since 2014 and am quite happy with their offering. It offers ssh root access if you want. Optionally manually installing software. Very much a GNU/Linux experience. Privacy focused and user oriented. And now slowly but surely there are parts of the software being opensourced.

mpol··on Stopping bad guys from using my open source project (feedback wanted)
In classic times there was no general concept of good or evil. The question was about if something is fitting in its context. With the rise of Christianity came the general concept of good or bad.
mpol··on Israeli-founded app preloaded on Samsung phones is attracting controversy
The same reason this happens/happened on Windows laptops. The hardware provider gets money to pre-install this software. They can then offer the phone at a lower price with a higher margin.
mpol··on SailfishOS: A Linux-based European alternative to dominant mobile OSes
Jolla had ROS Telecom as an investor since 2015, which might have held a majority.

A few years ago the Russina investors were unresponsive. The Finnish people from Jolla set up a new company and had all property moved to that new company through a court case. It's not the same company as before.

mpol··on SailfishOS: A Linux-based European alternative to dominant mobile OSes
There are plans now in 2025 to work on this slowly. A few apps have recently been opened up. More are coming. So it is underway.

In 2015 Jolla were bought by Russian owners. They didn't understand open source or free software, they just wanted something for the Russian market.

In 2021 these ties were broken, but it took a long time since the Russian owners didn't respond in any way. It is only two years or there about that they are on their own feet again. They are still severely understaffed.

The distinction in English might be more in "new" versus "used". And yes, that is inconsistent, you would think "new" versus "old" and "used" versus "unused". But alas :)

> a symptom of the increased commercialization

If it's about what people want to see, could it be that people cannot deal with insecurity anymore? We cannot deal with not knowing. We have to know for sure, so we can feel secure.
