mpnordland··on Royal Navy says quantum navigation test a success
What's the point of knowing where you are if you don't look cool while you're there? /s On the other hand, I do appreciate the efficiency of serving the PR mission and the testing mission with the same boat.
mpnordland··on MythTV 33 Released – open-source all-in-one DVR
If you're curious about the version number, it was changed from 0.xx to xx.0 for release 29. https://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions#When_...
mpnordland··on Schroedinger's streaming service just died
We don't need DRM to enforce reselling. Equipment and methods to reproduce physical media are widespread today and there isn't a way to prevent copying and then reselling. Other than the marginal cost of CDs, Vinyl, cassettes, etc.

Purely digital just drops that cost from a few cents to nothing. DRM free music stores have existed for over a decade and already de-facto operate in this manner.

There isn't a practical reason to require DRM in order to have ownership over a digital copy of a song.

mpnordland··on Ask HN: Why is there no small Android phone?
If you decide to go this route, please note that only one variant of the s10e is supported by Lineage OS. The US variant (with a Qualcomm CPU) is not supported and cannot be unlocked.
mpnordland··on Duff’s Device in 2021
Yes, but instead of performing a loop control for every computation() it is only performed once every four computation()s.
mpnordland··on Sign in with Matrix
I really like the concept, but I'm not happy with the implementation.

From what I can see, it makes a call and receives an access token. This token can then be used to make requests to the matrix server like sending or retrieving messages. If this component is used for a matrix client, this makes sense. If the component is used for another service or app, I don't think this is a good idea.

mpnordland··on Goose flying upside down is simply showing off, say experts
You're both wrong. There won't be much motion at all because drowning people don't splash.
mpnordland··on Garmin received decryptor for WastedLocker ransomware
Given the references the author found to apparently reputable ransomware recovery firms, my reading is that the decryptor was built by one of those companies using the key provided by the intruder.
mpnordland··on Sup: Super simple deployment tool – 'make' for a network of servers
It is unclear to me what advantages this tool has over existing tools.

Why should one use Stack Up over Ansible or Puppet?

mpnordland··on This isn't your father's Microsoft
I'm not really considering it for my personal stuff, but since work is a Microsoft shop, I'm really pushing to get on .NET core. We're at a point where most of our Windows bound stuff is going away and we can start to shed a lot of weight if we can port what remains to .NET Core.
mpnordland··on Pine64 November Update – ANSI Pinebook Pro and PinePhone Preorder
At that price it can have 2 dead pixels and I'd still buy it.
mpnordland··on Show HN: Passbox – Give access to your data only after you're dead
Your feature list for Freemium includes both "Fixed 1-Day Access Wait Period" and "Set Your Own Access Wait Period."
mpnordland··on Software Test Desiderata
I'm the only developer on my team concerned about writing tests. I don't have a lot of experience doing it, and I have no one who can review my tests. Is there anything I can do?
mpnordland··on Ask HN: What do you self-host?
I've been wanting to do a kubernetes setup with my home server, but most tutorials are aimed at multi node clusters. Do you have any links on how to setup such a system?
mpnordland··on Household Bleach Inactivates Chronic Wasting Disease Prions
More like wash your hunting and butchering equipment with this to decontaminate it. Won't help meat that already contains these prions, but would limit the spread.
mpnordland··on Firefox 70 released for Firefox Quantum: Developer Edition
You can turn on usb debugging and attach to it from your computer. Then go to about:debugging to inspect, add breakpoints, etc.
mpnordland··on The Nightmare of Valve’s self-organizing “utopia” (2018)
Well, honestly that sounds like hell on earth for the unlucky person. I think that would disincentivize inter group cooperation.
mpnordland··on GDPR is an identity thief's dream ticket to Europeans' data
Point of fact: it's not the GDPR, per se, that causes companies to hand over personal information to duplicitous individuals. It's those companies poor verification and security practices.

The GDPR does create a new attack surface, in that companies now have a legal obligation to provide information. The article did not say whether or not there is a legal obligation to properly verify the identity of the requestor.

mpnordland··on Librem 5 Smartphone Final Specs
So for me, this is roughly what I want in a phone. But the thing is, I bought a phone over two years ago, with better specs for $100 less. That same phone today is priced at $200-$300.

The way I see it the real value add for this phone is the software, and this whole mainline Linux, FOSS, run whatever you want approach is very attractive to me.

But is it worth $700? Is it worth $700 when my current phone is in great condition and most likely will be usable for several more years?

I feel bad, because I do want to support this kind of thing, I'm just not sure that buying __this__ phone is the right decision for me.

mpnordland··on BIY: Believe It Yourself
> FACE 2 ‘JETTATORE:’Our Facial recognition is trained on specific facial physiognomies of people that normally bring bad luck (known as Jettatore)

Congratulations you made an intentionally racist computer program.

mpnordland··on China Bans the Word 'Leica' on Social Media
So my guess is that Huawei will now stop partnering with them for their phones? How does China deal with this type of thing?
mpnordland··on Starkey and the Future of Hearing Aids
So, take the idea that Starkey is going on, but make them ostentatious? Kind of the way arm and leg prostheses have gone now that 3D printing has reached consumers?
mpnordland··on Lemmy: Federated Alternative to Reddit in Rust

mpnordland··on Microsoft revives “Clippy” as a sticker for Microsoft Teams
I installed it in my Teams instance, but none of the content loads. Just an error message saying something went wrong.
mpnordland··on Microsoft begins work on its 2020 Windows releases in new preview
I have a similar search setup to yours at work. I type 'm' and get management studio every time. My previous computer developed it, and then it took some time for my current one to get it, but now it always works. I agree that there's some sort of learning going on with the search.
mpnordland··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages instant in one minute
While this is an approach you could take, it's not a very user friendly one. I agree with you that those HR policies sound draconian, but OP isn't necessarily in a position to challenge or change them.

In addition to being less user friendly, having the mindset that users/visitors to your website must live and work in ideal settings means that whatever you create will tend to be fragile and brittle because you don't try to take into account situations that you haven't seen before.

mpnordland··on Ask HN: Which abandoned proprietary software would you resurrect?
My Dad used Money 99 for years until he wasn't able to run it any longer. He switched to gnucash and seems to like it well enough.
mpnordland··on Aether – Free, privacy-sensitive public communities
FYI, there doesn't appear to be any cryptocurrency involved, which is a plus for me.
mpnordland··on Astronauts escape malfunctioning Soyuz rocket
I dunno, there's probably a cargo bay in it. Stuff an airman in there with a couple of tanks of oxygen and a rifle.
mpnordland··on Astronauts escape malfunctioning Soyuz rocket
I'm pretty sure that's when the US Airforce launches the X-37b and claims ownership by repossession.
