mping··on More Fucked Today Than Yesterday
I'm not vegan, but what's wrong with turning vegan as a suggestion for an industrial society?
mping··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
If you think about it, it's only a good material because we ignore the downsides. If we could put a price on that, the economics wouldn't add up.
mping··on Kimi K3, Qwen 3.8, and Anthropic's (Potential) Unravelling
You assume everyone has extra 200$ to pay. For someone living in a low wage country, it's hard to pay that much, even if you produce a multiple of that value in theory
mping··on TigerBeetle: A Trillion Transactions [video]
The design with hot/cold storage makes it much more interesting than FDB for some use cases. FDB is an excellent DB with very strong operational guarantees, TigerBeetle seems to be specialized for financial data and to optimize perf/cost ratio.

Both are great

mping··on PlanetScale Offering $5 Databases
Jesus dude, just say it was a mistake to call it free forever. How can you be a founder or whatever, have a product and not expect people to judge the words your website had, or the words you say? You should know it comes with the territory.

Doesn't matter how hard you guys worked to be profitable, it's about building trust and relationship with your audience.

mping··on OpenTelemetry Is Great, but Who the Hell Is Going to Pay for It?
On paper this looks smart, but when you hit a but that triggers under very specific conditions (weird bugs happen more often as you scale), you are gonna wish you had tracing for that.

The ideal setup is that you trace as much for some given time frame, if your stack supports compression and tiered storage it becomes cheap er

mping··on Java 24
I think in practice it has to do with some libs (eg jdbc drivers) that would be relying on synchronized. If the performance with vthreads was much worse for some cases it would be a bit of failure
mping··on Pick Your Distributed Poison
Don't forget FoundationDB
mping··on DJI announces an electric mountain bike drive system
Well put. I wouldn't want to ride with my kids with a 3000w bike breezing pass me in the bike lane at 45km/h
mping··on How to do the jhanas
Sure! But those were not ordinary people but special disciples, who had accumulated alot of blessings over a long time, thus were able to meet the Buddha and become enlightened with a couple of sentences from the Buddha. Still, the Buddha himself certified their enlightenment, they didn't go around claiming it themselves. Huge difference.
mping··on How to do the jhanas
Claiming that someone attains Arhat (or Arahant, if you are used to Theravada texts) with just a couple of meditation retreats is just wild. Because the 9 dhyana, or 9 samadhi, or 9 Juana corresponded to the level of wisdom of an Arhat. It corresponds to enlightenment in Theravada, and in Mahayana too - just not the "biggest" one.

So it's actually very harmful to do these claims; each dhyana (or jhana) level corresponds to a certain level of wisdom, and you are supposed to have less and less afflictions as you move up. The problem with meditation training is that is very common (and easy) to get sidetracked for 10 years thinking you have attainment but you are stuck. The Chinese style is to find a good teacher, an enlightened teacher, a so called Good Knowing Advisor who can certify your attainment or put you on the right track. Because otherwise it's just wishful thinking.

Best or luck to the author, but like the GP said, have some humility and find a competent, certified teacher. Making false claims, even out of ignorance will prevent you from accessing the proper instructions in the future.

mping··on Ask HN: 30y After 'On Lisp', PAIP etc., Is Lisp Still "Beating the Averages"?
I see your point, but in my experience you can ramp up some eg: Java developer real quick; and in a couple of months they can quickly start to become more productive than with Java.

There are alot of caveats here, and it highly depends on the teams, projects, maturity, quality of tools, and so on, but there are not alot of weird concepts in clojure that makes it that hard to understand (as a counterpoint to eg: rust borrow checking rules, or C++ templating, and so on).

The hard part with clojure is having just enough discipline to keep things in check.

mping··on Show HN: File0 – An easier way to manage files in serverless apps
It's just different maturity stages of different products. It's very hard not to add features when your bottom line depends on it.
mping··on WiFi 7 is officially here, but routers are pricey. Do you need it yet
Same, I have two powerline APs that deliver ethernet+wifi, more than enough for chromecast/netflix/etc. The only issue i have is sometimes clients don't choose the best APs.
mping··on 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad' author Robert Kiyosaki reveals he's $1B in debt
It's woefully short sighted, as it misses the long-term prospect of economic output, as most classes of people you mentioned provide some economic benefit in one way or another. Cynicism should be precise, in my opinion.
mping··on Italy bans cultivated meat products
At this point, we all should point to personalized diets. I'm vegetarian for many years now, yet I started to have iron deficiency. B12 is perfectly fine. My wife is also vegetarian, her B12 and iron are fine.

You should keep an eye on your b12/iron/protein/whatever levels, but each individual requires a different approach.

mping··on The destruction of Gaza's internet is complete
Don't have a horse in the race. Isn't Israeli constitution specifically about the Jewish people, as a ethnic, religious group? I read it discriminates against interfaith marriages, etc
mping··on Why should I care about OpenTofu?
Infrastructure as code. You define your infra in a couple of files, then terraform builds it against eg: aws.
mping··on Spring 6.1 now compatible with virtual threads and JDK 21
There is a flag you can pass to the JVM to emit a log when a thread is pinned. It can also log a stack trace to show the call stack.
mping··on We reduced the cost of building Mastodon at Twitter-scale by 100x
Congrats on the (kinda) launch. I was curious to see what you guys were up to. The blog post is pretty detailed, and with good insights. Reducing modern app development complexity to mixing data structures sounds like a good abstraction. I'm sure you thought really hard about the building blocks of Rama and you know your problems better than most of the hn crowd.

Now, the really hard part becomes selling. If companies start using your product to get ahead, that will be the real proof, otherwise its "just" tech that is good on paper.

On a side note, did you guys got any inspiration from clojure? I see lots of interesting projects propping up from clojure people...

Best of luck!

mping··on Vegan diets cause far less climate pollution, study shows
Veganism is actually a spectrum, as one can always find some connection to animals and their suffering. And you don't need to buy into it, you can go with your own definition.

To me it sounds you have just a bunch of excuses to avoid actually doing anything.

mping··on Time to subsidize e-bikes?
Can we start calling them analog bikes instead? As a guitar player, acoustic sounds very weird.
mping··on When wealthy adventurers take risks, who foots the bill for rescue attempts?
This is the Mediterranean. I am sure most countries know the location of most vessels. If a rich guy would try to cross in wooden plank we would call him adventurer, and I'm sure the effort to rescue him would be far greater.

By not saving people in the Mediterranean, it acts as a deterrent to future attempts.

mping··on Podman Desktop 1.0
To put it in another way, business doesn't care what language it is written as long as you ship it fast and it passes QA.

Electron gets the job done, and you can tap a huge pool of devs.

mping··on Ask HN: Why do search functions everywhere not return what I search for?
It's to drive engagement. Why give you exactly what you want, when they can make you click some other stuff? There's no real competition, and if there were, the competition would soon realize it would have more revenue if it used the same strategy.

You can bet that somewhere, someone was looking at some A/B testing with these "features" and they saw an uplift of X% in revenue, so why not do it?

mping··on The mysticism of Alan Watts (2018)
At this point we are basically nitpicking over the Internet, but even if you want to take a journey just for the sake of the trip, a map is still very useful.

Most of the human endeavors (art, science, etc) are facilitated by having teachers. Spiritual advancement is no different and in my book, anyone who thinks different is delusional. You may be perfectly happy with no teacher, but you are leaving out a huge chunk of it by navigating on your own. Of course you are free to disagree, but I think it is essential to know about the range of possibilities before deciding if it's worth to have a teacher, and most people simply have no idea.

mping··on The mysticism of Alan Watts (2018)
You have the order reversed. In Buddhism, you learn to let go of attachments, and because of that you let go of smoking, alcohol, etc. It's not the other way around.
mping··on The mysticism of Alan Watts (2018)
It is not necessary but you won't make much progress without one. Spiritual practice without a teacher is like navigating without a map, you may end up in America thinking it's India.

If you are somewhat serious about spiritual practice, of course you should find someone who walked some of the path already, otherwise it's impossible for you to know - by definition, you haven't walked the path yet so you don't really know.

mping··on Ask HN: What is your cloud strategy vis-à-vis Google Cloud?
Do people actually consider Alibaba and GCP? I would wager that most of the potential customer base of the two don't intersect.
