mpalczewski··on Consumer prices rose 8.5% in March – highest since 1981
USD is not down. The dxy index has been going up all year. Inflation is a global phenomenon.
mpalczewski··on Success and Failure at Pebble
I did eventually buy an iPhone 13 mini. Still somewhat disappointed by it. What I really wanted is something like an iPhone 13 mini pro. I used the zoom on my iPhone 12 pro and never the wide angle, if they only pick two cameras, please give me the zoom.

It also would have been nice to have the better screen.

The 12 had bad battery life is what I heard.

mpalczewski··on Apple starts manufacturing iPhone 13 in India
The pace of productivity increases in manufacturing is increasing faster than pace of increase in demand. This is similar to what was happing in agriculture around 1900-1930 or so when 90% of the country farmed. When/if manufacturing comes back it will be much more automated, it will be much less labor intensive.
mpalczewski··on Why I'll never use Affirm again
> They threatened to report this to a credit rating agency. At any given time it's probably not a big deal assuming 1) you don't need to replace your car or sign a lease or get a personal loan around that time and 2) you know that you can dispute negative marks on your credit report and you know how to do that.

or 3) it's just a bluff or 4) they do this all the time and the hit is so minimal that it won't even register, because of Affirm's disrepute.

mpalczewski··on Why I'll never use Affirm again
Sounds like the only harm done to you is some unpleasant emails, and some phone calls that were also rather unpleasant that you initiated. Their automated systems and support seem rather terrible(unfortunately normal). You might have just sent these bad automated emails to your spam folder and been just fine.

Everything else is based on some imagined harm that might or might not come to you or some other imaginary person at some point in the future.

I used to get worked up about stuff like this but now I ignore it and my credit is pretty much perfect still. My mental state is much improved.

I might be not understanding the situation completely though.

mpalczewski··on 40% of California's small businesses died in the last two years
One can't even judge if 40% is unusual. Most businesses fail. It could a healthy sign that a bunch of businesses were started. It could be a normal amount, or it could be really terrible.

Without more context, it isn't really informative.

mpalczewski··on End the Streaming Struggle with Plex
Those are also known as ads. I frequently see repeatedly shows I have no interest in(actually negative interest, in that I would be better of not knowing about them). I see stuff that I don't like, I see stuff that pushes or attempts to push buttons, it's a constant annoyance. Apple tv doesn't do this, alternative launches don't do this. They are ads, they don't have the next thing you are mostly likely to watch but rather whatever show they are trying to push at the moment without any ability to change this. I would be really surprised if this isn't directly monetized(though it is indirectly monetized).
mpalczewski··on End the Streaming Struggle with Plex
yes, Chromecast with Android/Google TV is all ads all the time on home screen it is rather unpleasant.

I changed my home launcher to one like this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.cosinus.la...

it has made the experience much much better.

mpalczewski··on Show HN: A plain-text file format for todos and check lists
I switched away from Workflowy to a plain text file format. Load times are quicker, navigation is quicker, can use keyboard only without a mouse, the UX can keep up with the pace of my thinking.

I prefer vimwiki for this purpose https://github.com/vimwiki/vimwiki

You can get plugins that sync it to a git repository. I love this.

There's also task warrior plugins, though I haven't figured out how that would for me, seems to get away from simple text files at that point.

mpalczewski··on The case against empathy (2019)
When I take my cat to the vet I get upfront estimates.

When I take myself to the doctor no one can tell me how much anything costs.

Regardless of insurance status the vet gets paid the same amount.

My pets get better healthcare then I do and I pay less for it and they don’t have insurance. I’m relatively healthy, my cat has FIV. I have insurance my pets don’t.

mpalczewski··on The case against empathy (2019)
The us has over ten times the population of Australia. The concentration of power is much greater and the distrust of that power isn’t completely irrational.

What I can’t figure out is why one state out of the fifty can’t do healthcare. That’s how it stayed in Canada, in one province.

mpalczewski··on Hackers gaining power of subpoena via fake “emergency data requests”
oh looks like fake news, even the ny times article says.

"New information has emerged regarding the death of the Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick that questions the initial cause of his death provided by officials close to the Capitol Police."

Wikipedia says

"The cause of Sicknick's death was first thought to be from injuries, but months later the medical examiner reported there were none."

"The District of Columbia chief medical examiner found that Sicknick had died from stroke, classifying his death as natural"

The original commenter said some officer was beaten to death. Maybe another officer, or were they just mistaken?

mpalczewski··on Hackers gaining power of subpoena via fake “emergency data requests”
First I'm hearing of this, do you have a source about the officer being beaten to death?
mpalczewski··on The Code Review Pyramid
yes, the strawman of nitpicking has been killed.
mpalczewski··on The Code Review Pyramid
> when confronted, they explained to me as one would a child, that they cared deeply about code quality

these people sound useless.

Readability as it applies to code is how easy it is to read the code and understand it in relation to how complicated the problem domain is.

mpalczewski··on The Code Review Pyramid
First thing I review is readability.

Code should be readable. Once code is readable it makes reviewing the rest much easier. Readable code is more maintainable and problems jump out at you.

Stuff other than readability is important, but if you focus on readability it makes the rest of the review go very smoothly.

mpalczewski··on Amazon intentionally made it hard to cancel Prime subscription in secret project
The worst part is that the answers to the second two questions are sort of irrelevant, yeah, I'd rather enjoy those many benefits, but yes I'm still sure I want to cancel. Yes I'll miss the benefits, but I'm still sure I want to cancel.
mpalczewski··on Court affirms imported beef still allowed to be labeled "Product of USA"
2 out of 3 judges are interpreting the law this way. This went all the way to an appeals court. There's a strong implication that there is quite a bit of room for the judges to maneuver.

The minority opinion judge said > if consumers are deceived by the label, “Product of the U.S.A.,” then that label violates both the FMIA and USDA regulations.

mpalczewski··on US Federal Reserve raises interest rates for first time since 2018
In the us we printed a bunch of money, and now the dollar is strong, but we have world wide inflation.

I don't think it helps to look at US charts for a worldwide phenomenon.

mpalczewski··on Why is it hard to buy things that work well?
Another way to look for non crap, is to check the used value of something. E.g. check swappa. If people are still paying a lot for an item after it is used, usually a good sign. If they are not and you still want it, get it used and save a ton.

Another good way, check how much insurance costs. e.g. How much is that extended warranty going to cost on one car vs another. How much is home owners insurance in one neighborhood vs another. Insurance companies that make mistakes here go out of business.

mpalczewski··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
IIRCGoogle Pixel 5a, had the same camera as the more expensive Pixel. The SE with it's fingerprint unlock looks very nice, but the camera is a bit of a deal breaker. It's one thing I don't like about my iPhone 13mini.
mpalczewski··on Evening use of light-emitting eReaders negatively affects sleep (2014)
> WTH were the study authors thinking?

They were thinking that they wanted a publishable result.

Unfortunately, little to no difference on sleep between dim e-reader at night vs book and dim light wouldn't get published even though would be really useful to know.

mpalczewski··on Voice Lessons – How coaches get in athletes’ heads
Do you mind expanding on how you applied it to chess. I'm curious how you translated it to this domain. Watching the seems of the tennis ball doesn't seem to translate in an obvious way to me.

I've read the book, and I'm definitely one of those that tends to overthink. I tried reading one of the other books in the series and found it not nearly as helpful.

mpalczewski··on Soybean oil affects hypothalamus, causes genetic changes in mice: study (2020)
I somewhat agree that the fear of linloeic acid doesn't always match facts. I do tend to avoid seed oils as they are relatively new and their health effects are rather suspect.

However, in this case, the eggs and lard that existed in the human diet for a long time, are not the same. The chickens and pigs are eating a different diet and this does effect the composition of the fatty acids present in the flesh/eggs.

mpalczewski··on Is it time to remove reiserfs?
Anything to prevent them from changing the name of the filesystem?
mpalczewski··on Ask HN: Quit caffeine? Before and after anecdotes
Most people I have known who had stomach issues around coffee had them resolve by switching to espresso, or espresso based drinks(if making at home pump based machine, or manual I suppose but not steam). I'm definitely in that boat.

Tea on the other hand starts ripping my stomach apart after a day. YMMV.

mpalczewski··on How much do construction costs matter to the price of housing?
A not insubstantial cost of that rebuild is permitting.
mpalczewski··on Alphabet Announces Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2021 Results
This makes the stock price in line with other dow jones stocks, something that Apple did right before it was included in the Dow average. The Dow unlike other indices does not weight by market cap or anything like that it literally uses the stock prices.
