mountainboot··on Mount Everest is visible from Kathmandu for first time in living memory
There are already rules about things like labor standards of where the product was made. Like if a company uses slaves to manufacture a product, the purchasing company doesn't just through up their hands and say "What can we do? It is not our labor standards they have to comply with." No reason we couldn't add environmental standards to the list.

Maybe I have been in a corporate bubble, but I haven't seen much churn in the past couple of years. React is everywhere, with a smattering of Vue and Angular here and there.
mountainboot··on The evidence behind putting money directly in the pockets of the poor
That is not correct that in general the rich got rich by being more effective with their money. In the US social mobility is limited compared to other countries. How rich your parents are/were is more important than your intelligence.
mountainboot··on The Great Asshole Fallacy
This was a very interesting post and I liked a lot of it so I won't talk about that part. You mention "This subject pains me the most, especially when I hear civilians talking about service people in a negative light when they see violence in particular". At least in the US, it is taboo in most circles to criticize soldiers. All the people I have met who have served in the military, including my brother in law, are extremely kind, selfless people. But there are also soldiers who commit war crimes. We need to be more open talking about the military and the use of violence, not less.

Meh idk, seems like a waste of time. I have worked as a front end engineer at large companies my whole career and have never once been asked for a portfolio.
mountainboot··on Work-from-home boom leads to more surveillance
So we shouldn't have laws against assault because people still die of assault?
mountainboot··on Gig workers are organising in tech-savvy ways
Not just floor workers.
mountainboot··on Ask HN: What are you reading to make sense of the economy?
Predict every crisis to the tee? Citation needed. Reminds me of the economists have "predicted nine of the last five American recessions."
mountainboot··on Half of American workers would rather work from home forever: poll
No need to carefully select participants. If you do random sampling with a large enough sample, the proportion of all subcategories should reflect the population at large.

mountainboot··on Show HN: WorkDNA – Attract engineers by showing off your engineering culture
My initial thoughts are that this does not actually tell me anything. Take this...

"What traits do you value in engineering managers and leadership?"

"Servant leadership is everything to us. We want managers and leaders who are humble and know that their role is to support their teams and make sure nothing is standing in the way of doing great work. So not only work blockers but also ensuring our team has the time and energy to balance their personal lives with their work lives."

Every company I have ever worked for claims something similar. This doesn't actually tell me anything. I would still need an inside person to tell me how it actually is to work at the company.

demand a salary close to what they think they should be getting, according to their advisers or statistics or whatever.

The OP's comment implies that the job applicants are entitled for making salary demands based on statistics. There is nothing entitled about asking for market rates.

The comment responding to it points out the problem with this thinking in a lighthearted way. To me it was the perfect response. I understand you may disagree, but it was in no way unreasonable.

My comment on the other hand could have come across better. I implied you were not following the rules you set which I don't think is fair. I may disagree with your decision, but I could have done it in a more respectful way.

mountainboot··on Build stuff
That applies to you as well. Nothing in the comment came across poorly. Maybe you should assume good faith on his part.

No this isn't true. The competition to get any residency slot is insanely difficult. There are people who graduate from medical school that apply to hundreds of residencies every year and still don't get anything.
