mooze··on Rhode island makes financial literacy classes required for high school students
Things that our schools don’t teach but totally should:

- Nutrition

- Financial literacy

- Logical fallacies

- Emotional intelligence

- The creative process

mooze··on How to write a resume that converts
If it's under NDA then don't talk specifics, but during the interview you can talk about difficulties you overcame or lessons you learned during the process. The key is to show that you are equipped to solve their problems.

If they're pushing for you to break NDA, then you probably don't want to work there anyway.

mooze··on How to write a resume that converts
Having been on both ends of the hiring process (in tech):

1. You don't have to be 100% qualified. Just show me that the skills you have are transferrable.

2. Tailor your CV & cover letter to the vacancy and company. List at least one work/life/volunteering experience (preferably a project with end results) that is linked to each of the requirements.

3. Keep it short and to the point. A quick glance and relevant keywords should jump out and pique my interest.

4. If you go "but..." to any of the 3 points above, you're probably wasting everyone's time.

mooze··on Ask HN: How can I improve my intelligence?
Question everything. Not just the obvious things like "how does crypto work", but also mundane things you encounter in everyday life: Why did they react that way? Could I have handled that better? Why was ___ placed in that location? Why isn't there a ___ here? Why is ___ more expensive than ___? What are they trying to achieve with ___? Why do I want ___? Etc.
mooze··on A Beginner's Guide to Houseplants
Dischidia aka String of Nickels/Button Orchids are great if you don't have a green thumb. Mine have outlived even my Tilandsia (both of these are hardy soil-less plants)
mooze··on “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” turns 42
Back in 2004 I had the H2G2 website (h2g2.com) bookmarked on my Nokia 3100 and would read it whenever I was waiting for the bus (this was before Google Reader). A cheeky, entertaining precursor to Wikipedia.
mooze··on Fuzzy Logic
A great application of this in real life is rice cookers.
mooze··on Zettelkästen?
If you liked this idea, give TiddlyWiki (https://tiddlywiki.com/) a go - it was built on similar premises.
mooze··on iPhones are hard to use
Can confirm. Many a time the owner of an iPhone has had to shift the floating dot around to show me something on their screen. Such an eyesore...almost as bad as the notch.
mooze··on Ask HN: What discontinued company/product do you wish was still around?
Google Moderator. It was a reddit-like service that allowed you to crowdsource popular opinions. We used it to pinpoint UX issues in the early days of our startup.
mooze··on The #1 Office Perk? Natural Light
My office recently knocked down a dorm room so that the team sitting in the corner could get some sunlight. Made the area so much more pleasant to work in.
mooze··on I've Been Using Evernote All Wrong. Here's Why It's Actually Amazing
There's always checkvist.com
mooze··on Chordify: Get the chords to any song, using Haskell
Wow. I'm learning to play by ear right now and this is a godsend.
mooze··on This Post Took 3 Years to Write
That's what I thought! Even the artwork style looks similar. The gameplay is very different though.
mooze··on Games That Teach Programming: A Brief Overview
Tutorials are all very well, but what we really need is the programming equivalent of Geocities or Diaryland. That's how many of us got started with HTML and CSS - by making stuff and trying to get it to look nice.

Ideally this place would take care of the back end and provide a few basic components (e.g. pages, views) for you to structure your app. There would be code boxes for you to type into, and once you click save you'd be able to view and use the app at username.site.com. At first you might piece together a program out of pre-written components via point-and-click, then you might tweak the code to better serve your app, later on you'll get bored with the presets and start writing your own functions...eventually you'll learn to code from scratch.

There are tools that come close to this (GAE for example), but nothing at the absolute-beginner-anyone-can-do-this level.

mooze··on Founders' Accents
Why don't you just speak to them in English? That's the best way to learn a language - by practising it every day.
mooze··on Ask HN: Is preparing for the slashdot effect even necessary?
Since your blog is mostly static you could switch to CloudFlare's DNS - very easy to set up plus they serve cached content when your servers are down.
mooze··on Shakespearian sonnets based on frequency analysis of original work
Cool post, but those aren't sonnets.
mooze··on Old-Fashioned Play Builds Serious Skills
These days it's all about results: what are we going to get for doing this action? What purpose does it serve? The same thing has happened with our eating habits, among other things. How many calories does this contain? What vital nutrients will this give me? (I'm not saying it's a bad thing.) However I have a feeling it'll be a while before this approach will work with child development.
mooze··on New Heroku.com site.
Good job Heroku, you now look exactly like every other shiny new flat bootstrapped web 3.0 app out there.
mooze··on Study Finds Spatial Skill Is Early Sign of Creativity
If this is true, then schools are literally quashing creativity.

When I was in high school my maths teacher insisted on us using algebraic methods to solve geometry problems. (I'm a visual-spatial thinker, go figure.) The reasoning went: laying the steps out that way would guarantee 'process points', even if you got the result wrong. Not possible with a geometric approach. This was in preparation for the Chinese Gaokao, mind, so points were a matter of life and death (or so it felt like).

mooze··on Explaining Loom
Yeah, it sounds like a feeble flickr/dropbox/minus mashup.
mooze··on Only the Lonely
I wrote a blog post on this a while ago, but it boils down to being kind and supportive in a non-intrusive, non-judgemental way.
mooze··on Only the Lonely
> I want to speak to an important question, though: why DO we continue?

So that others won't have to suffer as we did.

mooze··on The Physics Behind Traffic Jams
There's a whole chapter on traffic jams in the book Critical Mass. From what I remember, innocuous things like a single driver slowing down can cause massive jams due to the natural 'physics' of traffic.
mooze··on Ask HN: Do people use the zoom functionality in browsers?
I zoom out on tiny text, yes, but I also do so on websites with interesting semi-covered backgrounds.
mooze··on Ask HN: I have a good idea and a POC... Now what?
Friends are great for high-fives, but useless when it comes to constructive feedback. Your best bet is to attend maker/hacker/startup events and tell people about your project. If they seem interested, go into detail about your plan: why you started it, what problem you're trying to solve, and how you're going to solve it. Be open to new ideas. (Sometimes you discover that your 'goal' isn't really your goal, but a shadow of your 'true' goal.) Adjust your plan accordingly.

I'm only a few years older than you and on a similar path, so you can start with me if you like. (Also: put your contact details in your HN profile so people can reach you!)

mooze··on Modern Physics From Scratch
Hmm I never got that far to be honest. But it does seem a bit out there.
