moonka··on Ask HN: What did you find in your DNA using 23andme?
Not sure if this is why, but I know some folks who are concerned about getting such tests done at the doctor's office due to both cost, and the fact that it will go into their medical records (and thus possibly impact insurance).
moonka··on How bicycles have changed in the last 25 years
>Gel saddles killed brookes but somehow they came back. Fixies and hipsters?

I have a leather saddle (brooks knockoff) and have put several 100+ mile rides on it. A stiff leather saddle is much more comfortable after several miles than a cushier saddle. Doesn't press in the same spots the whole time.

moonka··on U.S. Secret Service Warns ID Thieves Are Abusing USPS’s Mail Scanning Service
It lets you know when something is coming that's worth stealing. Cuts down on your chances of being caught for a bunch of junk mail down quite a bit.
moonka··on Florida passes Amendment Four, restoring voting rights to convicted felons
Until recently I had just taken it for granted that it was what we do, but after thinking about it, what's the rationale behind taking away the right to vote when someone is convicted?
moonka··on Amazon HQ2: Advanced talks about second headquarters in Northern Virginia
Boeing moved from Washington State to Chicago.
moonka··on In Amazon Go, no one thinks I'm stealing
>However, by removing a lot of humans from the shopping interactions, it allows the removed humans to never learn from their mistakes, to stay isolated in their own views.

Relying on shopping interactions to teach these humans places a huge burden on the people they make these mistakes on. Sometimes I'm not looking to be a teachable moment, sometimes I just want to get my shopping done (or get a cab etc).

moonka··on Japan's Hometown Tax
That just means you don't have to pay tax on the amount you donate, it's not a 1:1 reduction in taxes.
moonka··on United Airlines Threatens to Engage Collections for Passengers Who Skip Segments
I'm surprised we haven't seen more companies abuse the credit reporting system like this. Recourse is painful for the customer, and I imagine a non-trivial number of them will just pay off the debt. I'm guessing with the gutting of agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau we'll see a rise in these type of practices.
moonka··on Expect a Loud Noise from Your Cell Phone at 2:18 PM
It's unblockable as far as I know.
moonka··on New Zealand travellers refusing digital search now face $5k Customs fine
ACLU has a good explanation here about the 100 miles to the border. It covers 2/3 of the population. https://www.aclu.org/other/constitution-100-mile-border-zone
moonka··on Delta to start scanning faces at airport check-in
>Delta said that travelers who don’t want their faces will be given several opportunities to opt-out, Delta spokesperson Kathryn Steele told TechCrunch, and can continue to “proceed normally” through security.

>CBP spokesperson Jennifer Gabris said that only US citizens can opt out, and will have their documents checked manually.

>Homeland Security, which oversees border security, struck a different tone when last year it said that anyone who wanted to opt out of having their faces scanned should “refrain from traveling.”

Found the different responses interesting.

moonka··on Trump Accuses Google of Burying Conservative News in Search Results
Maybe we should bring back the FCC fairness doctrine. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FCC_fairness_doctrine
moonka··on Life expectancy declines seen in U.S. and other high-income countries
Exactly! Thanks for clarifying my point so well.
moonka··on Life expectancy declines seen in U.S. and other high-income countries
You nailed it. It is scary how easy it is to fall into the poverty trap even if you do almost everything right, and how hard it can be to get out.
moonka··on Life expectancy declines seen in U.S. and other high-income countries
>It is the "bullshit" factor that comes with nearly everything in life these days. Parking tickets, identity thieves, regulations that hurt small businesses, crowding in cities, crazy drivers on the road, being taken to court for nearly anything...

A lot of these (though not all) become easier to deal with as your income goes up, either because it has a minimal impact on you, or you can have people deal with it.

moonka··on Passport queues vex airlines
I've cut my leisure plane travel for the same reason. I used to fly ~10 trips a year, but in the past few years I've cut back to 2-3, and that's mostly to visit family.
moonka··on Make a “Literary Clock” from a Jailbroken Kindle
The screensaver hack allows you to do that.
moonka··on Make a “Literary Clock” from a Jailbroken Kindle
That's awesome! Up until now the only reason I have jailbroken every kindle I've owned is to have the screensaver be the book I'm reading rather than the dull preset ones. Finally I've found reason 2!
moonka··on Where do people get money to buy CA homes these days? Often, from mom and dad
In addition to this, it's per person. If you have Mom + Dad in the picture, each can gift 15K, and if it's to a couple, they can each gift 15K to each member of the couple. Thus you can pass down 60K each year without any sort of forms/taxes.
moonka··on Missouri disaster: Duck boat’s designer had no engineering training
These are not great on the road either. There was a massive accident a couple years ago in Seattle which killed 4 students.

moonka··on New developer requirements to protect our platform
I've noticed both on Coinbase and Ally recently that connecting other accounts for transfer lets you do it instantly in a little popup window that asks for credentials for other banks. Seems like a big step backwards in training users.
moonka··on The men and women who brought curry to Birmingham
>In the U.S., for years there was an irrational fear of pressure cookers exploding so they never really caught on until the Instapot came along (which some people don't realize is a pressure cooker). The fact is, pressure cooker tech is very old and remarkably safe. It's been "beta-tested" by millions of people in India.

I have a feeling that the recent popularity of the InstaPot will make pressure cookers much more popular in years to come.

moonka··on How private equity firms make money offering loans to cash-strapped Americans
>It may have even been the right one.

Absolutely, I just think it's a shame that there aren't alternatives available. Normally I'd assume that interest rates are that high because that's what is required to remain profitable while lending to the market, but I can't help wonder if consolidation and wall street ownership means there's a large profit margin and some gouging happening.

moonka··on How private equity firms make money offering loans to cash-strapped Americans
>Is the preference here that the guy didn't have the option of fixing his truck?

It would be nice if people weren't running so close to the edge that an emergency can ruin them. I don't know the particulars of this guy's story, there must be many people who are in this situation since this is such a profitable industry. Maybe that speaks to a larger issue of inequality in our society. I'm not sure that relying on predatory loans to be a safety net are the only or best option for society.

moonka··on ICE Whistleblower interview with CBS interrupted by government agents
>Edit: I know that lunch hour in CA is exactly the wrong time to post something like this but please actually try and refute something I'm saying instead of mashing the downvote button like you're on Reddit. We're supposed to be able to have adult discussion around here.

Not sure why you are sneering at CA. Californians are just as American as the rest of the country, and in this case the issue at hand was in California.

moonka··on Scottish bookstore lets people run the shop while renting an apartment upstairs
I'm dying to know more about how the financial end works. Where do the profits go, and more importantly, how do expenses work? If I'm renting for a week, can I order a bunch of sci-fi (or anything I'm interested in) and leave the invoices for the non-profit to handle? Or is it more that you act as the manager, changing decor, the vibe, etc, but stocking decisions and whatnot fall under the purview of the non-profit.
moonka··on Electrifying our network
I find it telling that neither this or the linked blog post give specifics on the amount they are providing. I'm guessing most of the additional costs to go electric will fall on the driver.
moonka··on Country Time Lemonade Will Pay Legal Fees for Unlicensed Lemonade Stands
I dropped off a few books this weekend to one, and when I went by a couple hours later 2 out of the 3 were gone. So at least someone is using them!
moonka··on Seattle now decade’s fastest-growing big city in the U.S.
Lots of existing ones, but not a lot under construction. This[1] talks a little bit about why there haven't been a lot of projects in the last few years.

moonka··on Philip Roth has died
His book "Plot Against America" helped to change my worldview. It was the first time I thought about the fact that it was not a foregone conclusion that America is a country that hadn't fallen to fascism in the mid 20th century, and led to me start reading history with a more critical eye. After that I realized just how much history is comprised of shades of grey rather than right and wrong.
