monort··on An Alphabet X concept from 2016 is an unsettling vision of social engineering
I hate it too, but try to create a tutorial and you will understand the reason - it takes much less time, just record what you are already doing. The alternative to video is not text but absence of information.
monort··on How can we be sure AI will behave? Perhaps by watching it argue with itself
It's the ancient logic of we vs them, they believe AI will necessarily destroy humans, so any means to prevent it are acceptable.
monort··on Safe ways to do things in bash
Check out python sh: https://github.com/amoffat/sh
monort··on Concorde ‘B’
Is it ethical to raise consumption with a raise of your salary? Is it ethical to give the raise to these employees?

It looks like the answer should be the same to this and your question.

monort··on Concorde ‘B’
The reverse is true for me, I'd choose 15 hours in a flat-bed vs 7 hours in an ordinary seat.
monort··on Carbon emissions from tourism are rising at an alarming rate
Have you ever tried? You shouldn't be forced to travel like everybody else. Like go only to a second largest city, go for the nature, visit only places that have an eclipse, go to cities with conferences you'd like to attend, go to places where your friends live.
monort··on Letting go of the GPS to learn the art of natural navigation
I haven't been in all medinas of Morocco, but never had a problem with GPS there, have you actually tried to use it? :) I think the only place where I really had a problem were Caruggi of Genoa.

One tip to have a better location awareness with electronic map is to enable trip recording, if you see your previous way you can sort of continue walking "inertially".

monort··on Ask HN: Laid-off readers over 50, have you left the tech workforce?
They will probably easily find another legacy VB app to maintain, it's like COBOL that never dies.
monort··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
Delivery from restaurants.
monort··on Microplastics found in 93% of bottled water tested in global study
Bottled water is cheap, they buy it in 5 gallon bottles. I've seen that in many countries.
monort··on The Why of Cooking (2017)
Food delivery (not the fast food one) is changing the need for cooking, I haven't cooked in ages.

In principle, the price of food preparation should be smaller when done on a large scale, but for some reason it's not the case, except for the Southeast Asia.

monort··on Richest 1% on target to own two-thirds of all wealth by 2030
Kibbutzism was less authoritarian, than you can expect from communism. I think it was because people always had a choice to leave.
monort··on Richest 1% on target to own two-thirds of all wealth by 2030
Voluntary communism was tried too, read about kibbutzim. As you can expect it had practically the same problems as USSR (weirdly including authoritarianism) and they mostly had to return back to private property rights for members.
monort··on Split Brain, Undivided Consciousness? (2017)
Interesting, I didn't know about agenesis of the corpus callosum. Why are all split-brain experiments use patients with surgically removed callosum and not this people with a rare, but still frequent defect?
monort··on Sierra Leone just ran the first blockchain-based election
Physical control of polling station is not required. Voters are getting the filled ballot outside the polling station from organizers, tossing it into the box and bringing the empty ballot back.

monort··on A startup is pitching a mind-uploading service that is “100 percent fatal”
Nobody saying there is a god or soul, but explanation can be in unknown parts of physics and surprisingly we have that unknown parts.

We have unexplained phenomenon - consciousness, everyone (well, at least me) experience it. We don't have the mechanism for it, so we reject that phenomenon exists. I don't think it's a good idea to outright reject hypothesis, that have evidences behind it, but don't have a mechanism. Remember what happened to theory of washing hands for surgeons or to continental drift (it took half a century for it to be taken seriously!)

monort··on A startup is pitching a mind-uploading service that is “100 percent fatal”
It is not hidden, we don't have a complete physical theory - quantum mechanics and general relativity are not compatible.

As an additional fun fact - we don't know how general anesthesia works.

monort··on MIT and newly formed company launch effort to build compact tokamak pilot plant
There are at least several possibilities

1) People, who don't want to be affected by global warming. Right now nobody is affected enough to pay and it is too costly (estimates are $500/metric ton, while emission per capita is around 20 tonnes/year).

2) Captured carbon can be sold commercially for use in plastics industry, at some point it will be cheaper, than oil/gas extraction.

3) Carbon emission trading already exists, some companies even doing it voluntary, like Google. Direct air capture can piggy-back that system.

monort··on MIT and newly formed company launch effort to build compact tokamak pilot plant
Global warming will be solved, when we have a source of cheap electricity, it will be possible to just pull CO2 from the air.
monort··on The Tyranny of Convenience
I made a small Chrome extension for that, it shows links to all discussions about the URL on HN and Reddit. Viewing comments on one page would be cool, but it is probably a copyright infringement.
monort··on Jack White bans phones at gigs for “100% human experience”
You just buy a local sim card in airport.
monort··on It can all go to zero
This is not possible because public keys you want to crack are in hashed form RIPE-160(SHA256(public_key)). Grover's search algorithm can help with it, but speedup is much less, than with Shor's algorithm and won't be of much help with sha256.
monort··on Google Memory Loss
From the url, I don't think they have a documentation :)

monort··on The Marriott Family's Civil War
There are some experiments with control group. South/North Korea, West/East Germany. Taiwan/Mainland China.
monort··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea
They probably mean voiceless alveolar affricate, similar to "zz" in Italian pizza.
monort··on Against the synchronous society
It looks as a feature of culture. When there is a demand, no legal obstructions and cultural acceptance, then barbers, banks, shops work late into evening.
monort··on I went full nomad and it almost broke me
There are almost no countries, that allow tourist visa for six months. Work visa usually requires a local sponsor. World is not adapted to idea of nomadism.
monort··on Who owns the space between reclining airline seats?
Seats configuration depends on air company, not the plane. Check seatguru.com before buying tickets, or better buy/upgrade to exit row seats.
monort··on Google works with hotels to hurt travel competition
It's not a dumb question, try to travel with airbnb and you will find that a lot of hosts do not update their calendar, when they get a booking via other avenue. It's especially frustrating, when the host enabled the instant booking.
