monological··on China declares cryptocurrency deals ‘illegal’
How do you think the dollar keeps its value? Do you understand that the reason it has value is because it’s backed by the US military, which provides peace and stability for industry to consume a vast amount of energy to produce goods that get shipped around using fossil fuel? Have you calculated the total energy expenditure of the entire US financial system, direct and indirect, and then compare it to proof-of-work calculations? No. No you haven’t. Don’t just parrot what the current-day zeitgeist told you to think.
monological··on Ask HN: What are good sites to post proposals for small software projects?
So you basically want an API to post jobs. That is definitely something I had in mind to do next. I hesitated because I didn't want someone to spam the site, but it's something that I think could work by maybe adding an upper limit to how many jobs you could post per month.

Having templates is also a good idea. I didn't add that because I felt I didn't need it for the MVP, but maybe I'm wrong. I'm also a solo founder, so generating a large number of templates is quite challenging. Something to think about though.

Thanks for the feedback.

monological··on Ask HN: What are good sites to post proposals for small software projects?
https://www.nanojob.com

I just launched my startup a few days ago that's exactly this. It's a job board for small software projects. It's also integrated with Stripe, so you can pay freelancers directly through the site.

Please let me know what you think.

I'm currently only beta testing in the US, but eventually I'll open it up.

monological··on Show HN: Nanojob – A freelance job board for quick, small tasks
Thanks for the feedback. The site uses Stripe Connect for the money transaction. It is fully integrated into the site and makes paying freelancers a snap.

Yes, at the moment, you can search by category, but I have not implemented filters yet.

As for sorting by difficulty, I'm not sure what you mean by that. Difficulty is very subjective. You can sort by payout and budget, which should correlate to how complex the project will be.

monological··on Show HN: Nanojob – A freelance job board for quick, small tasks
Hi HN,

I was frustrated with existing freelance job boards. I felt they were all too bloated, too many features and the service fees are just too high. I decided to build a more minimal, easy-to-use job board that focuses on small jobs.

I built this primarily for startups, digital nomads and people that work from home, as a way to delegate small tasks off their to-do lists, to freelancers.

I would appreciate any feedback you guys can give me.

monological··on Thoughts of work invaded my life until I learned how to unplug
You've become addicted to the dopamine loop of crushing tasks. It's become your "god". You lie to yourself that what your doing is good and worthwhile. You're anticipating the adrenaline rush of that tantalizing future success. You masochistically grind because you know the payout is coming...

The only way out is to zoom out and look at the bigger picture. You have to listen to your heart and follow what it says. What that really means is, don't do anything that your inner person doesn't want to really do. Otherwise you'll just be stuck in this endless Pavlovian, button pushing trap called startups.

monological··on Ask HN: My friend made it big. How to handle?
On the flip side, you could’ve tried to do a startup and burned yourself out beyond recognition, only to have it fail. Even if you told yourself that you at least had to try. There can be regret on both sides. Only a very small percent actually strike gold.
monological··on Bay Area restaurants consider closing due to outdoor dining ban
A study was just released by Stanford University with the objective of estimating the infection fatality rate of COVID-19. The results are as follows: "In people < 70 years, infection fatality rates ranged from 0.00% to 0.31% with crude and corrected medians of 0.05%."[0]

Is it right to shut down the entire economy with these statistics or are people overreacting? High risk individuals do have the option to get food delivered to their home, if they're afraid of contracting the virus. Shouldn't they also be able to make that decision for themselves, if they're OK with taking that risk or not?

On the other hand, we don't want hospitals filling up past their limits and putting tremendous strain on health care workers. It's definitely a tricky situation.

monological··on 'They're ripping us apart': Bay Area small business owners talk new lockdown
Define dangerous. A study was just released by Stanford University with the objective of estimating the infection fatality rate of COVID-19. The results are as follows: "In people < 70 years, infection fatality rates ranged from 0.00% to 0.31% with crude and corrected medians of 0.05%."[1]

Is it much better to "err on the side of caution," when the numbers are so low? And if someone is a high risk individual, they can avoid putting themselves at risk by getting food delivered to their home. Should the entire state shutdown and destroy the economy in the process, just because a small percentage of the high-risk population wants to eat out? Shouldn't they also be able to make that decision for themselves, if they're OK with taking that risk or not?

Some things to think about.

monological··on Americans are more worried about their sons than their daughters
Social dominance hierarchies are evident in many animal species, including bonobos and humans. Displayed aggression in social settings, with and without physical altercation, serves as a way to establish said hierarchy. Ultimately, the function of hierarchy is to provide stability to the tribe, by organically placing you in a appropriate position to maximize the chance of the tribe's survival. There are clear biological differences between neurotypical human genders, such as endogenous Testosterone and Estrogen, giving rise to said behaviors. Conversely, the female's typical function in a tribe is to provide social cohesion, stability and pacification, and is driven primarily by hormones. This dynamical system generally operates in a very carefully balanced fashion. Thus, when humans intervene and introduce artificially made things like weaponized social networks that exploits and hijacks your dopaminergic system through likes or birth control pills that throws off your naturally occurring hormones and neurotransmitters, one could argue, just maybe, that it could have a potentially catastrophic long term effect on society.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't condone "bar fights", but there is both a biological and sociological reason for male aggression and the pendulum has swung quite far the other direction, demonizing it as "toxic masculinity".

Just my 2 cents though...

monological··on Ask HN: What physical product do you make?
I built a digital chip tester from scratch, including schematic/layout, firmware and software. It's still a work in progress, but I thought I'd share.

I wrote a blog post about the process here:

monological··on Show HN: Made a DI.FM electronic radio macOS app
If there’s any electronic music fans out there, I highly recommend checking https://di.fm out. They have a ton of different channels and you can listen for free. It’s great music for long coding sessions. Just FYI, the app only works with a premium subscription as it is a third-party app.
monological··on Link between inflammation and mental sluggishness shown in new study
There’s a strong link between the common cold sore (Herpes simplex virus type 1) and amyloid beta buildup in the brain, which accumulates and severely impacts cognition. It’s estimated that around 67% of the entire world’s population has HSV-1. When your immune system weakens and the virus activates and comes out of dormancy, your body starts to pump out these amyloids to “protect” itself against the virus. The issue is that high levels of this peptide buildup leads to Alzheimers like symptoms. Over time, if you have poor sleep hygiene or under a lot of stress, the buildup reaches a point of significant aggregation causing “brain fog,” even without a confirmed diagnosis of Alzheimers. This is just my theory though. I’m not a doctor. It’s just my 2 cents.

I wrote a minimalist vim config with install scripts based on spf13. I wrote it for myself, so I just took out a lot of unneeded options and tried to keep the scripts lean. I encourage people to check it out, clone it, make it their own.

Hey! Of course I would find you commenting on HN! Did you end up finding a place to live or are you coming back to Tokyo :p I ended up going to Singapore and coming back.

monological··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2013)
there's also https://hnjobs.org/ that's free to use and you can search the posts.
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
OP here. Per PG's recommendation, the site can now take any username/password. It does not require your hn username or password.
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
How should I authenticate then? I could always let the user put a token in their profile, which I can scan for, but I can't do that either because the IP is blocked and I can't scrape the profile.
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
I manually took a few posts from the 'who is hiring' thread. Jobs from https://news.ycombinator.com/jobs are YC companies only.
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
Agreed. I will try implementing this asap.
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
Thank you!

1) I was thinking of changing the verification process by allowing users to place a special token in their profile, which I can just scan for (within a small time window). Thoughts?

2) I took ideas from stack overflow and 37signal's job boards.

3) In the works! :)

4) I work at Xilinx as my day job, but I have a passion for startups and spend quite a bit of time on HN (as a lurker though). I noticed there are 'who's hiring' posts every month, which are usually quite popular. I figured a dedicated website would suit the community well.

If I ever start charging, it would only be after I implement more features, make the site more useful, and depending on what feedback I get. Also if I do charge, whatever the cost might be, it would help filter out a lot of junk posts.

5) This is absolutely key. I hope to earn this trust. :)

I appreciate the feedback.

I apologize, my server got banned by HN, thus all registrations are failing. Pg can you unban the server's IP: 216.70.83.132?
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
The other option is simply not linking it with HN. Later on, I'm going to allow for filtering by karma if you're looking for potential employees.

Another thought I had was putting a token in your profile which I can scan for. What do you think?

monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
Thanks for the valuable feedback. It's an MVP just to test the idea out. If it sticks the UI will improve significantly.
monological··on Show HN: I made an HN job board
This is a great idea! I enforce location per job post so I can do this very thing. It's in the works.
monological··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2013)
Hi all,

I created an HN Job Board at http://hnjobs.org/

I posted a few of the jobs from here already. Please check it out and tell me what you think.
