monkmartinez··on Why did bar ends go away from mountain bikes?
> Or perhaps aesthetics play more a part of mtnbike design than functionality?

Nailed it. This is true for almost all bicycle endeavors save actual professional racing. Even then, a pro rider that isn't Egan, Sagan, or Froome is going to ride what the factory says to ride. If they (Specialized, Cannondale, Canyon, Etc.) need to pimp a new product, those dudes will pimp the product. Money talks.

OooHHHH, RAD!!! The elastic transform makes me grit my teeth as I try to fling those suckers against the walls.
monkmartinez··on Dancing robots you can fling
Why is it so satisfying to just YEET those things? Super fun, thank you for sharing.
monkmartinez··on Professor who harnessed power of cactuses is a top inventor
That is how most of my friends use the word "cactus" in Arizona.

Just an observation and a point of discussion regarding the big studios. Disclaimer, I am not in this space professionally, but I listen to a LOT of podcasts about VR/AR which spills into all of these topics.

Do you see a push away from Maya and 3DS max for a more platform agnostic modeling environment? Blender seems to be mentioned all over the place for beginners. From what I am hearing on podcasts, Unreal Game engine is making a big push into film/animation production in addition to its impressive game credits. As long as you can export an FBX file UE4/5 should be a great pipeline, or do I have it wrong?

monkmartinez··on Cycles X
Awesome!!! Those initial test results are darn impressive. Good to see they are working directly with Intel, AMD and Nvidia.
monkmartinez··on Apple’s M1 Positioning Mocks the Entire x86 Business Model
I edited my comment as I think in the context of the larger discussion, ARM and Apple are basically interchangeable.
monkmartinez··on Apple’s M1 Positioning Mocks the Entire x86 Business Model
Creative class is a lot more than programmers. Look at boutique system integrators like Puget Systems... do you see Apple/ARM Hardware? Heck no you don't! These guys sell hardware to a LOT of the companies that comprise the credits in movie production, game production, laboratories, university science departments, ML researchers, big energy, and soooooo much more.

These guys are not rewriting their software stack for thin chassis, thermal limited, and non-repairable hardware. Raytheon doesn't buy Apple/ARM hardware for their simulations, design and development. Does Boeing, Airbus, Ford or Caterpillar run on Apple/ARM hardware? Are these companies just chomping at the bit to ditch their legacy stacks? I don't think so.

You get an M1 with the new iPad Pro as well! I hadn't thought of the situation as the article presents. When shown in that light, it made me pause to reflect. The M1 doesn't make sense when its in every darn product. The only differentiator is screen size, RAM, and OS?

I will admit that I switched to Thinkpad and Win10 about two years ago when I had to return my butterfly for the 5th time. I am not looking back either. If anything, I am more focused on AMD Ryzen and Nvidia 30 series chips in MSI, Lenovo Legion and Asus offerings. There is nothing I can't do with one of those machines. Going Apple is a backward move for me as I like to program, design in CAD, play steam VR, and run blender sims. Can't do any of those well with Apple hardware.

monkmartinez··on .NET MAUI: .NET Multi-Platform App UI
It's great! Iteration in the space is greatly appreciated by me. Eventually we will get the cross platform UI layer that just works. We will not get there by just running Electron, React Native and others. I am super happy MSFT is having go after go at this!
monkmartinez··on iPad Pro M1
You are right that I don't need a surface to perform general computing tasks. All I am saying is that, I could do those things with a Surface. I can not do those things with an iPad. The Surface line is is DEAD once you can run a desktop OS on an iPad. Heck, I would go so far to say that would be a redefining moment for computing in general.
monkmartinez··on iPad Pro M1
Agree its a great tablet! It is versatile and I use the pencil quite a bit... HOWEVER, if it could boot to a desktop OS in addition to iPadOS... it would be the absolute killer machine for almost every use case under the sun, imo.
monkmartinez··on iPad Pro M1
It is a great tablet experience! They could have a dual boot option where you get a MacOS for real work. Otherwise you are right, don't try to make real work happen in the current form. SO MUCH FRICTION to copy and move a file around for example.

The bulk of my use is strictly tablet stuff and I think it is really great at that.

monkmartinez··on iPad Pro M1
No moment of silence needed. I have a iPad Pro 12.9 and its awesome for consuming content and drawing. For everything else there is a real computer. I can't use the iPad to program my Drone, or Run a CNC, or Play steam games, or link to the Oculus, or run VS Code, or use Fusion 360, or Run Linux or Windows VM's. Or, or... or ...

I love my iPad, but it is very, very far from a good computer interface right now.

monkmartinez··on iPad Pro M1
Its not the real Chrome or Firefox. The iPad version is not even close to the real thing on MacOS or Win10.
monkmartinez··on Intel, Nvidia, TSMC execs agree: Chip shortage could last into 2023
Is this artificial scarcity? Are the automakers blaming a chip shortage to cover for low demand? Has the world turned to FOMO as the next big marketing paradigm? Can we pull demand forward by creating a "shortage"?

Perhaps I should be in the looney bin, but I don't like the smell of all these "shortages"... they reek of manipulation and greed.

monkmartinez··on Ten years of OP-1
I didn't get a sense of entitlement. I see someone frustrated with features for price, then calling it out as non-sensical. I like when people do that frankly. Is it judgey? You bet, and its ok to have an opinion on the matter!
monkmartinez··on Ten years of OP-1
I do, but I am admittedly a small sample. A case can certainly be made that luxury cars, in general, are not very "good" cars in most metrics as by which the industry measures what a "good" car should be. I think OP has a valid point, if the synth Teenage is selling is inferior and more expensive but sells because "status" and signaling.
monkmartinez··on Previous Covid-19 may cut risk of reinfection 84%
Can I get a card that says I already had it and I am good to go? I even have the time off work to prove it! I am involved in a study that is measuring antibodies and 6 months later my antibodies are still really high.

monkmartinez··on Cycling is more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
How do I carry my kids and groceries in +100F(38c) or nearly freezing weather?
monkmartinez··on Show HN: DragonRuby Game Toolkit
Lets say I am not a Ruby dev, what would compel me to learn this over Unity, Unreal, React Native game engine, or one of the other (thousand) game engines out there? Are there enough Ruby devs to sustain this?

I remember Ruby Motion was a thing, then it wasn't... then it was again? I started learning web dev with RoR and quickly moved to Python as the ecosystem was so much bigger. I could transfer my Python knowledge into so many different domains. I remember at the time, I really wanted a "Ruby Motion" for Python... still do actually.

I have come full circle and now think JS is eating the world and I am playing in that garden... we'll see where that ends up I suppose. In any case, GOOD LUCK... I hope for the best!

monkmartinez··on Ask HN: What will be the future differentiator in electric vehicles?
This just isn't factual. Every part of car will eventually wear out. Go spend some time on the Tesla forums and you'll see they are not even close to maintenance free.
monkmartinez··on Laser Bear Honeycomb lidar
Needless friction. A competitor is going to get one if they really want it.
monkmartinez··on Phthalates Threaten Humanity’s Ability to Reproduce
Depends? Playing baseball and getting hit in the gooch with a bad bounce is common occurrence. If you never played baseball or a sport where you are not gratuitously hit by object or person the gooch isn't really in the popular vernacular. Come to think of it, I wonder what Cricket players call it... lol.
monkmartinez··on Phthalates Threaten Humanity’s Ability to Reproduce
Did she really replace AGD or anogenital distance, with Taint and Gooch? My goodness, I laughed like a 12 year old when I read that!
monkmartinez··on Study finds walking improves creativity (2014)
Try to lower the intensity and run slower. I can pump out 7:30 min/miles when in "go" mode. Thinking mode is 9 min/miles.
monkmartinez··on Ask NH: Where to go from Front end Development?
What kind of backend development do you currently practice? Language? Stack?
monkmartinez··on A new chapter – full-time working from a van in a forest
Great story! My wife and I recently sold our home and are now renting. My stress level has decreased 10 fold in the last 4 months since selling. There is always that little nag in the back of your mind regarding a house: "I would love to go on that trip and we have the money, but our <A/C || roof || plumbing || appliance> is going to need to be replaced in the next year or so."

I don't think I am cut out for a permanent #vanlife, but it sure sounds like a cool arrangement if you have the proclivity to handle all that it entails. My wife and I plan to do slow travel when our kids go to college. Move every year or so with a light load while learning different cultures.

Would love to hear more about the financial aspects of #vanlife... from my perspective, I reckon you save a bundle.... but I could be wrong.

monkmartinez··on Multiple Beverly Hills PD officers now weaponizing copyright against streaming
Do those "specific rights" include antagonizing a police officer while he/she is performing his or her official duties? I don't think the majority of society will agree with that, just my opinion. At the end of the day, we need to see a few cities that let their entire police force resign due to "woke" culture and watch what happens. People will vote with their feet and wallets.
