You mean well, well under $1k... like $65 and some craiglisting. You can have a soda machine that will be somewhere between $0.08 and $0.15 cents a liter to operate.

Springs are not always shaped like a car strut... AND Weight isn't important if the energy gained offsets the energy lost carrying the extra load.
monkmartinez··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
Great comment. Now, how often are officials confiscating shoes and sawing them in half to see what is really inside?

Corked bats? Hidden motors... etc...

monkmartinez··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
So why not just add springs to the entire shoe?
monkmartinez··on Nike Says Its $250 Running Shoes Will Make You Run Much Faster
So at what point can we just start using jumping stilts [1] or something similar? I mean the shoes are $250 and the stilts from Amazon [2] are like $50 more when you include shipping.

WRT to carbon fiber plate... how is that not "cheating" like the stilts? Its like electric motors in bicycles if you ask me.

My opinion on this is unpopular, but I will say it anyway; People shouldn't have more kids than they can afford.
monkmartinez··on How a Special Diet Kept the Knights Templar Fighting Fit
It is the same today... Catholics in my pueblo do not eat carne on Fridays (during Lent) which is to say no air breathing animal. Tuna fish salad is a very popular meal on Fridays if you have a house full of Catholics during Lent.

Quick question:

monkmartinez··on Renting is Throwing Money Away, Right? (2015)
I own my home in a relatively cheap COL area... I would rather rent. Houses nickel and dime you to death. The expenses pile up at both the front and back of the transaction... that is, when you buy and finally sell.

Please show me how the small increases in property value multiplies my initial investment. The problem is most people don't move sideways or down... they move up, thus negating any windfall in investment prowess. Timing, once again, can make or break you and timing is a fool's errand.

Renters don't always pay the taxes. There are several rentals in my neighborhood that are less than the mortgage. Once you cross a threshold of monthly rent, the market for available renters shrinks rapidly (Unless we are talking bay area). I mean... there are very few people spending $3000 a month in Phoenix renting.

I agree about the tax system bias toward home ownership... but there are ways to beat that. Starting or having a small business being #1. We could get into many ways to beat the tax system... but lets suffice to say that homeownership isn't really "beating" the tax system.

That "savings" on tax isn't savings... it is rent on top of rent... let that sink in.

monkmartinez··on Renting is Throwing Money Away, Right? (2015)
Not only that, but by the time you are ready to sell, you will have some expenses toward the "freshening up" of the place. Paint, minor drywall repair, cleaning, curb appeal shit... etc. It all costs $$$$...
monkmartinez··on Working on an iPad Pro as my main computer
I would say "great"... but also, "Why bother?" You did compare iPad Pro and iOS to alternatives, no? Main computer and all that?

The point is "main computer" means main... not secondary or ancillary to my main computer. Your average person does not have a need for several thousands of dollars worth of screens, and would be much better off with a laptop vs. iPad pro. Furthermore, the premise of this "experiment" is extreme navel gazing.

"Hey look at me everybody! I bought a device for almost a thousand dollars then spent a lot more on apps, then wasted a shit pile of time for a gimped UX that sort-of works! You can do it too! Just get your check book out and be prepared to buy another laptop and/or VPS space because you'll need it!"

monkmartinez··on Working on an iPad Pro as my main computer
The second you want to branch out and try something different, you are going to be stuck as hell on the iPad. No way to run Fusion 360 for example. Try to work on dropbox documents locally? Just simple stuff like downloading MP3 files and playing them can be a pain.

Unless you are laser focused on one task (like you seem to be)... sure it looks like you have made the necessary adjustments to make it work. For the general computer where your hobbies, desires and programs vary... there are just too many tradeoffs. I mean... running another OS on my macOS device is stupidly easy. I can manipulate any file in almost any manner. I don't have to paw at my screen for text selection... and so on and on.

That all said, I would love an iPad pro with macOS.

That is not smart. "Artist" or not does not preclude one from the enforcement of law.

Its like saying; "I'am just going to build a sculpture right here.... I don't really care about the codes or who owns the land, I am an artist so rules don't apply to me!"

monkmartinez··on Apple unveils new iPad 9.7“ with Apple Pencil support
I do... my 10 year old son lost a brand new pair of Under Armor shoes two weeks ago. Gone. Poof.

It was maddening as hell, but then I realized that I have lost bigger more expensive things as well. Also, I was a kid too... So I took a deep breath and he used his birthday money to buy himeself a new pair. I didn't have to raise my voice... he just "knew" not to test on this.

monkmartinez··on What Record-Low Unemployment Looks Like in America

> Any advice on how to do this in Juptyer with Python? In an ideal world, I'd just "tag" a cell somehow so that it ran periodically.

Don't. Use something that will engage them visually and mentally. Kids are not impressed with text, that ship has sailed.

monkmartinez··on JupyterLab is ready for users
The fact that the GUI is written in JS is my point. The reports of Python's death... you heard it here first.
monkmartinez··on JupyterLab is ready for users
There is only one mention of Python in the entire post... there are 5 mention of JavaScript. Recently, I have been mulling over the GUI creation problems and packaging problems that still plague the Python ecosystem. That being just the start of it...

I guess my love affair with Python is souring a bit. Compared to JavaScript it seems like it has slowed to a crawl on the innovation front. That is, for anything NOT related to machine learning.

I use Jupyter notebooks with Python all the time and only recently started using them with Node.js it seems like JS is just killing it...

monkmartinez··on The Case for the “Self-Driven Child”
I don't expect my kids to be "self-driven", in the sense of "productive" when I restrict screen time. They can literally do whatever they want... if that is mope around bored as hell, so be it. If that is digging a hole in the back yard, so be it. If that is getting into a little trouble somewhere down the street, so be it. If they want to read the latest "Diary of a wimpy kid", so be it.

The only thing I am after is some kind of interaction with the physical world where they are making the decisions. I have no idea if that is the right thing to do, but it feels like it is.

monkmartinez··on Solid aims to radically change the way web applications work
in a world of unlimited resources... sure. However, I, as an independent software maker, want to target as many screens as possible with the least amount of friction. I am not overlooking anything nor are the companies and other indies that target the web... that is called choosing pragmatically.

I would argue staunchly, that Fortnite (PS4 online version) is every bit as "addictive" as a FB feed. Ultimately, all they provide are shots of dopamine.
