The business had pretty questionable (read: bad) software for a long time, then came under new management a few years ago. I joined just under two years ago and since then we've been modernizing the code with an eye to move it off of the in-store servers its running on currently and into the cloud. That is complicated by the fact that the franchisees are not used to certain things, like really needing to have reliable internet with a failover, so we've had to (or had the opportunity) do some serious hardening on the in-store servers and how we deploy software to them. We've switched them all to immutable OSes, added a bunch of telemetry, and added some new services that are slowly eating the old ones' responsibilities and will be much easier to move to the cloud.
Also the winters are ok but not as nice as they used to be. I grew up here so I remember when they were extremely snowy and I miss that, now they're fairly grey and mild.
Despite that, some other parts of the business are trying their hands at playing slop slots...
What I'm saying is a group of people in a community taking up arms to defend themselves is not inherently the same as a drug cartel.
Honestly I dont think I've seen a tool I used regularly with such a moat lose it simply because they cant keep the service up. Also its hard to not see a pretty strong correlation between a bunch of these big companies doubling down on AI and just having their service go to s%#$. We've had similar issues with Digital Ocean recently, which is pretty lined up with them adding a bunch of "inference" services and rebranding the site to add all the "agent" marketing slop. Looking to move to Hertzner when the time allows.
Thats the cost of hosting your code on a platform you dont control. Its nothing new either ideologically or practically, large forges have been banning repos for years.
>Third, this reeks of children playing politics.
This is the age old liberal way of whining about political action they dont like, they rarely critique the actual decision but target "how" it was done. You can view it as "childish" if you want, but for those of us that see these tools as inherently bad an outright ban is the correct and decisive move. Folks seem to think that if a political action isnt technocratic enough it is childish, but really its the type of action we need more of. There isnt nuance to these tools in many folks' minds, they are a scourge and should be banned as swiftly as possible.
I think the parent is saying now that that is attempting to be applied to "creativity" directly, as opposed to something like a shift of medium, that it threatens many peoples' ability to maintain creative capabilities.
Anecdotally I've already experienced this at work where post-AI we had a junior completely stagnate and a senior with over a decade of experience in the bay atrophy to the point that he had to be let go.
Edit: it only needs an app for updates, which isn't notably different than taking you older pre-modem cars into the dealer for updates. Also I can't find any evidence that the base model even has a GPS built in.
