monadic3··on Peat fires continue to burn at air temperature of -50C in northeastern Yakutia
> I mean, cold itself (within Earthly limits) doesn't put out fires

This is not a meaningful phrase when cold is the absence of heat. You need to describe the motion of the cold air against the warmer system to get a meaningful phrase.

Being able to set a river on fire is not terribly unusual for a polluted river. I remember about ten years ago I posted up at the schuylkill, waited for an oily patch, and was able to set it on fire for about 5 seconds. These oily patches are uncommon. I have no clue where the oil came from but with the schuylkill it's anyone's guess. The patch itself is necessary for lighting the river on fire; you can't just set fire to an arbitrary section of river.

With modern fabs, how much of the operating cost is labor?
monadic3··on New six-film series from Adam Curtis
Narrative is how most people communicate. This is hardly a bad thing. This idea that a medium can do anything but communicate narrative is ridiculous.

Anyway, I wouldn't trust anything purporting to communicate the unadulterated Truth with a ten-foot pole. Name your bias and we're in business!

In this case it seems directly proportional to the cost of energy, barring a solution where you use passive ways (like mirrors) to redirect light into the building.

Americans being confused is hardly something one can avoid.

I'm a little suprised they didn't mention DOOM or Spacemacs.

I re-purpose abandoned code all the time. It's not a moral failing to release unfinished code, especially if you label it as such.

monadic3··on Establishment of a closed artificial ecosystem to ensure human survival on moon
I'd guess the barrier is personal wealth for most people. That's certainly what I blame my lack of landing on the moon thus far on.

As for being excited about paying for someone else living on the moon rather than more immediate social concerns—fat chance of that.

Surely this depends on the contents of the information. I refuse to carte blanche trust a government to decide secrecy when every indication is that this is used to mislead citizens. This emphatically is true for both governments in question.
monadic3··on Scientists just teleported an object into Earth's orbit for the first time (2017)
It does not help with time sync at all; you can't detect a collapse, just trigger it.
monadic3··on Buy Don't Build
This doesn't account for vendor incompetence at basic customer support, which is far and away the largest reason to avoid renting commodity services. Being able to debug and fix things on demand without waiting on another party is massively valuable.
monadic3··on Scientists just teleported an object into Earth's orbit for the first time (2017)
A better way to look at it is that a key is agreed upon, but not known, when the particles are entangled. When it collapses, you can read the key. The information, the key itself, still travels bounded by light speed from the point of entanglement. You cannot "write" over the entangled particles so this does not provide instantaneous communication.
monadic3··on Scientists just teleported an object into Earth's orbit for the first time (2017)
The only benefit that quantum entanglement provides is the agreement of a key over a distance. Communication itself would be "normal", i.e. EM.
monadic3··on The Zodiac Killer's most uncrackable cipher has, at last, been solved
Yup, and this doesn't even include all the disappearances that never get called homicides. You're disincentivized against calling a case a homicide if you can't bring a case—your clearance rate will drop. It also doesn't cover all the clearances which involved an innocent person pleading guilty to avoid heinous sentencing.

DDG is fine for many types of queries. It also doesn't have many of (what I consider) the drawbacks of google's search: hostile ad positioning, AMP, autoscraped meta crap. Pretending you can't compare them is ridiculous.
monadic3··on Brave Introduces Brave Today, the Privacy-Preserving News Reader
RSS failed when it became another siphon to pull you onto their site to view ads. (I.e. only putting "above the fold" in the rss feed). Exporting your content nicely structured actively works against the business models of ad-supported sites, and there are no replacements for ad-transaction-supported monetization on the horizon. While Google has control of the market we aren't going to have any decent way of aggregating news.

> We’re using Brave’s new private CDN to fetch RSS feeds anonymously via the browser and the browser’s personalization capabilities to rank the headlines for users with a simple algorithm that will make the experience interesting for everyone.

Can't get much simpler than "chronological", I hope they don't get too fancy with the same black box ordering that's ruined social media for news aggregation.

monadic3··on Show HN: Meli, a Netlify-like platform for deploying static sites
You might describe the product directly for those who don't know what netlify is (seems like some kind of combination of a static file server and rsync aimed at enterprise).

It makes me a little concerned that there are so many features.
