momokatte··on How Standing Desks Can Help Students Focus in the Classroom
If you pair a tall shop stool with a standing desk, like the Stand2Learn desk and stool shown in the article, you don't have to stand 100% of the time and the desk doesn't have to be adjustable between a sitting and standing position.

I had this kind of setup in a drafting class in high school and a few art classes in college, and now I've spent the last 5 months with a similar setup for computer use at work and home. I probably stand 2/3 of the time and sit 1/3 of the time, and sometimes I hop up and down to really get the blood flowing or pace around when I'm frustrated with something or trying to wrap my head around an abstract concept. I feel significantly healthier these days than I did when I was sitting in a desk chair 11-14 hours a day (combined work and home).

Just as an aside, if you're going to stand and read a book or use a tablet or phone, you'll want an angled platform to avoid neck strain.

@jethro_tell: "Does your dev box have a bandwidth cap?" and "How often have you exceded your bandwidth cap?" appear to be referring to monthly throughput limits (aka "download quota").
momokatte··on Gmail blows up e-mail marketing by caching all images on Google servers
Your work mailing lists only have accurate stats if all of the recipients currently enable loading of images by default.

I don't think you're being sincere in your concern.

momokatte··on US Government Takes Down 3D Printed Gun Plans
The "Liberator" instructions describe printing the frame of the gun first and epoxying 6oz of steel inside it to make it detectable by a walk-through metal detector, to be compliant with The Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988. Once this part is complete, the rest of the firearm can be manufactured without violating that particular law.
momokatte··on Portal Released For Steam On Linux
I did too! In a little window in the middle of my screen. Sometimes the game would freeze for a second or two to load a sound effect.

Tonight I played the first half of the linux beta at 1920X1080 resolution and it just made me giddy. I'd been waiting a long time for this day.

momokatte··on "X-" deprecated for HTTP headers
It's not just about the prefix -- the goal is to get rid of the unstandardized parameter namespace entirely. New parameters should be named for permanence, so if they do become standard there's no need for migration.

momokatte··on Ask HN: Is there an EC2 Spot Instance shortage?
This sounds like a good theory. $10/hour is over 8x the cost of a c1.xlarge Windows on-demand instance.

c1.xlarge on US-East charts: linux - http://cloudexchange.org/charts/us-east-1.linux.c1.xlarge.ht... windows - http://cloudexchange.org/charts/us-east-1.windows.c1.xlarge....

Try offering $1.30 if you need linux or $0.55 if you need Windows.

Using www.* gives you more options for load-balancing and distributing your website too, since an A record can only resolve to an IP address.

I recently learned that the hard way when the Amazon Elastic Load Balancer IP address we were pointing our A record at abruptly went out of service. Serendipitously, we had already been preferring www.* for some arbitrary reasons so it was an easy fix. And it turns out we're reaping the benefit of what Johann describes too, as we are also serving a large number of images from a separate subdomain.

I'd report that to Google as a bug.

The official toolbar should not exceed request limits that were designed to prevent PageRank scraping by third-party software.

momokatte··on What can I offer friends for investing instead of equity?
Disclaimer: I might be misinformed or just making stuff up about how stock actually works. I write code, not contracts.

If you absolutely must keep them off the books because they're not accredited, perhaps you could be a proxy for that investment. Friends & Family give you the money, you bring it into the company and have proportionally more shares issued to yourself, and you hold those shares on the behalf of Friends & Family.

On the upside, it might make getting that angel investment go smoothly and if things really work out your company could have an IPO -- after which you could outright transfer the shares to Friends & Family for them to hold or cash out. It would also be that "fun" investment they're looking for.

On the downside, if your company got acquired you'd probably pay more income taxes on those extra shares than Friends & Family would if they had been the shareholders instead.

momokatte··on 0 degrees celsius + 0 degrees celsius -
"three degrees hotter" is an interval of three degrees, and not an absolute value along a scale. So you'd take your original temperature and add an interval of 3 degrees to it.

0 degrees Celsius has a heat value (273.15 K). If you double it (i.e. add 0 degrees Celsius to it), you get 546.3 K -- which is 273.15 degrees Celsius.

What it really comes down to is that if you're going to perform math on temperatures for scientific reasons, use Kelvin. And if you're adjusting a temperature by an interval, leave out the units from the math completely.
