molave··on Ask HN: How is AI-assisted coding going for you professionally?
1. Generate unit tests beyond the best-case scenario. Analogy: Netflix's Chaos Monkey

2. Incremental cleanup: I also use it as a fancier upgrade of Visual Studio's Code Analysis feature and aid me in finding areas to refactor.

3. Treating the model as a corpus of prior knowledge and discussions, I can form a 'committee of agents' (Security, Reliability, UX engineer POVs) to help me view my work at a more strategic level.

My additional twist to this is to check against my organization's mission statement. That way, I hope I can help reduce mission drift that I observe was a big issue behind dysfunctional companies.

molave··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
> Choosing not to pirate is just an objectively wrong choice. It's a worse experience, with worse quality, worse availability, and at a higher price tag.

Choosing not to pirate and not to consume simultaneously is not necessarily a wrong choice. A difficult one? Yes. But I propose that it could be beneficial for your mental (and maybe physical) health.

molave··on Valve: HDMI Forum Continues to Block HDMI 2.1 for Linux
I'm tired, boss.

The winning move is not to play. The HDMI Forum (and other orgs that behave similarly) prey on our desire for the most/best/(insert superlative here). I get that there's no free lunch. It is also true you see a lot of initiatives and projects do a lot of collective good while demanding much less.

molave··on Boom, bubble, bust, boom. Why should AI be different?
From what I remember, in past bubbles that burst, everyone thought stocks will go up forever.

So, if people are wondering out loud (with widespread traction) if there's a bubble, there's probably not one. It may be self-fulfilling. The awareness of a potential bubble influences us to be more cautious.

molave··on Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable
Changed from Windows 10 to an Ubuntu with beefy specs. When I saw firsthand the improvement of the user experience, I felt the year of the Linux desktop is nigh.
molave··on Character.ai to bar children under 18 from using its chatbots
"You" could range from being a scapegoat in a family/school class, to you being a member of an undesirable minority.
molave··on Character.ai to bar children under 18 from using its chatbots
Such a mindset is ripe for selective enforcement and discrimination if society or someone powerful does not like you.
molave··on The madness of SaaS chargebacks
It's a symptom of a service problem.
molave··on EA Open Sources Command and Conquer: Red Alert, along with other games
EA... good?
molave··on TikTok divestment law upheld by federal appeals court
I mean it's similar to banning Monegasque locals from gambling in Monte Carlo
molave··on The Weeds Are Winning
Life finds a way
molave··on Ask HN: Life-changing purchases since 2020? (Under $100 and under $1000)
A good stainless steel pan. I cook eggs there. It needs a certain technique to pull off, but once you learn it, the food tastes a lot better.
molave··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
Seconding steps 1-2. I don't do step 3 because I want to whisk the eggs. It takes some practice, but the end result is worth it. The eggs taste better when cooked on a stainless pan.
molave··on What Kind of Writer Is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT's style is like an academic writer's. It's tone and word choice are same-ish across various subjects, but it's coherent and easy to understand. In retrospect, I've seen papers that would pass as GPT-created if they're written after 2022.
molave··on The $621M Legal Battle by Record Labels Against Internet Archive
One step closer to me listening to public domain-only music if I could help it.
molave··on Fraud, so much fraud
It's disheartening to think that the virtues you are told to have as a kid are considered "weak sauce" once you are an adult.
molave··on DOJ accuses Visa of monopoly that affects price of 'nearly everything’
It should be treated as a natural monopoly (i.e. digital utility) along with all that it entails.
molave··on Prover-Verifier Games improve legibility of language model outputs
I can tell technical papers influenced ChatGPT's outputs the most. Most of the articles generated using it may be regurgitated, but I can't deny how easily digestable the info is when presented that way.
molave··on AT&T says criminals stole phone records of 'nearly all' customers in data breach
The authorities requested the delay of the disclosure: https://cbs58.com/news/nearly-all-at-t-cell-customers-call-a...
molave··on What does it feel like to read RSS feeds?
I use Feedly, switched to it from my previous platform because it can support atom feeds
molave··on Nvidia hits $3T market cap on back of AI boom
As someone who dabbles in creating fiction as a pasttime, it's revolutionary. I can use AI to come up with details for minutiae that I don't have the time nor energy to conceptualize. There's just too many things that are in my head and not enough capabilities to realize them in a pre-AI world. The AI outputs are garbage as-is, but what they come up with already does 80% of the work done. I can do the rest to make it completely fit my needs.
molave··on Eye exercises for myopia prevention and control: comprehensive systematic review
Anecdotally, this worked on for me. It's not a great improvement, but it was noticeable.
molave··on Sakuga-42M Dataset: Scaling Up Cartoon Research
It's used as research. How valid is this usage as fair use?
molave··on U.S. libraries are battling high prices for better e-book access
This is why I'm wary of any talk of AI regulation. I understand the theory that unfettered AI is very powerful and dangerous. It's only my concern of the actual policies being as anti-consumer as intellectual property with regards to digital content.
molave··on I love programming but I hate the programming industry
The issue is that at its purest, programming does not sustain itself financially, or it does but not in the short term. The programming industry is designed to be financially profitable (let alone sustainable) even if it's a conceptual dead end when it comes to groundbreaking stuff.
molave··on New York medical school eliminates tuition after $1B gift
It'll be similar to how horse drivers reacted when cars became popular, or painters with the advent of the camera.
molave··on I turned my ThinkPad into a programmable USB device
My laptop's monitor went bust and now serves as a glorified CPU.
molave··on Ask HN: What are some actual use cases of AI Agents right now?
From a creative writing perspective, I can set personalities or quirks for a character and it can come up with in-character responses and dialogue.
molave··on Spotube: Open-source Spotify-Youtube client
It's like the Matrix. In my opinion, there's 1%-2% of the entire population that pirate out of principle or "cost savings"
molave··on United finds loose bolts on plug doors during 737 Max 9 inspections
It still requires a human to be sometimes skeptical of the AI's results.
