moistly··on Ask HN: Should we be concerned about the current H5N1 outbreak?
Shame on you for supporting the clowns. Their anti-rational, anti health measures claims are detrimental to your site and your society. Protecting them from even mild criticism is clown moderation. Shame!
moistly··on HSBC's Money Laundering Scandal (2022)
HSBC exists because of Opium. It has always been the bank of the drug cartels.

> HSBC was founded after the second of the Opium Wars, by which time the trade was already well established. The founders included several opium traders who recognised the profitable banking opportunities presented by the new market.

They’ve been in the thick of it since forever, unrelentingly.

moistly··on HSBC's Money Laundering Scandal (2022)
The fish rots from the head down.
moistly··on ChatGPT Is Dumber Than You Think
ChatGpT does not know anything. It vomits words that are statistically likely to convey meaning, but there is no guarantee that it is truthful: it is always a probability, not a certainty.
moistly··on Show HN: I turned my microeconomics textbook into a chatbot with GPT-3
These AIs tell lies. Do not believe them with blind faith. If they say something true and valuable, it is not because they know something. They don’t have knowledge: they have word vomit that is statistically likely to have meaning.
moistly··on The chancellor’s hesitancy over Ukraine is no joke
It ends with a cruel and thieving dictator being deposed, and a free democratic nation remaining so. No nation should fall to Russian dictatorship.
moistly··on Show HN: I turned my microeconomics textbook into a chatbot with GPT-3
Really good, until the day it hallucinates a novel answer that suggests doing something bad.
moistly··on [dead]
Why would the school need anything more than, if so concerned about a student’s health, a doctor’s note? “This girl is healthy and can participate in whatever.”
moistly··on Tesla tells investors it’s being investigated by the Justice Department
That makes so much sense. So much sense.
moistly··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
A subculture is generally hidden from the mainstream culture. Few are those who display their BDSM subculture in obvious public fashion.

A counterculture is in the face of the mainstream culture, trying to change the cult. It is countering the mainstream. It is activist or, at the least, unabashed with the intention of normalization.

moistly··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
Gathering space: The Men’s Shed
moistly··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
The Signal: You do not carry a Phone.

You definitely do not carry a smartphone. You might be excused a flip phone, if only because you’re not likely to b super-connected with it, but honestly that’s pushing it; even the most primitive cellphone has sms.

moistly··on Ask HN: Are browser bookmarks dead? What alternative(s) do you use?
I stuff everything into Safari’s “reading list” and then never read them :-/
moistly··on Tesla tells investors it’s being investigated by the Justice Department
The idea of needing the car to know how to keep me in-lane is bizarre to me. Never in my life have I found it difficult to stay in my lane. The day that I need a car that helps me stay in my lane, is the day my license needs to be revoked and my decrepit ancient ass settled into an old age home.
moistly··on Ask HN: How far are we from a TikTok-style app with 100% ML generated content?
If it entertains, distracts, or zombifies the viewer, they will watch it obsessively, regardless the originator. The masses love their soma.
moistly··on The Do’s and Don’ts of Dating Your Boss
Bosses, don’t date your employees. You’re playing with career suicide.
moistly··on Ask HN: How often do mobile users hit the wrong HN button?
All. The. Frickin. Time.

iPad Pro, circa 9” model, vertical orientation. The prose text is very small. The grey name, time, “buttons” headers are very, very small. I suppose I could use custom css or increase the font size, but I have good eyesight and like the information density. It’s always a crapshoot as to whether I can hit the teeny tiny touch target.

moistly··on Computational Philosophy
Computational Philosophy is to use software to prove theorems. The FP link is to an overview of the field, below is a link to descriptions of the software systems:

https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/different-theorem-proving-syst...

moistly··on The limits of "computational photography"
Computational Philosophy: “the use of mechanized computational techniques to instantiate, extend, and amplify philosophical research. Computational philosophy is not philosophy of computers or computational techniques; it is rather philosophy using computers and computational techniques. The idea is simply to apply advances in computer technology and techniques to advance discovery, exploration and argument within any philosophical area.”

The word “simply” is doing a lot of work in that last sentence, I’m sure!

https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/computational-philosophy/

(BTW, I just posted same to front page, if the subject interests you & we’re lucky, it’ll generate some discussion)

moistly··on Apple encourages the destruction of mint MacBooks while pretending to be green
AFAIK all you need to do right now is ask for a free, pre-paid shipping envelope. Until Apple develops psychic abilities it can’t get any easier.

moistly··on Apple encourages the destruction of mint MacBooks while pretending to be green
The hype around this is bizarre and, IMO, inauthentic/inorganic.

Nobody in their right mind wants to go back to the bad old days when carrying an Apple product was an open invitation to being mugged; to when you couldn’t let you phone or laptop out of sight because it would be nicked in the blink of an eye; when losing your corporate phone or laptop was a major security disaster.

And besides which, AFAIK, Apple will gladly take back your device, disassemble it into its component parts, and recycle everything it can, as parts for repairs or melting down all the valuable metals.

I don’t think you see Samsung, Lenovo, Dell, or even Microsoft offering the same facility.

moistly··on Get ready for a SoCalGas bill this month, as natural gas prices soar
Natural gas prices are not soaring, they are crashing: down >50% since mid December. WTH, LA Times?
moistly··on Ford recalling 462,000 SUVs due to camera bug linked to at least 17 accidents
Linked to seventeen drivers who don’t have basic driving skills like “look over your shoulder, out the back window.”
moistly··on Ask HN: Why is Roblox allowed on the iOS app store?
You might find better answers by asking/searching for reasons “Pythonista” and “Carnets” are allowed.
moistly··on Toroidal propeller allows a drone to operate more quietly [pdf]
These previous discussions have links to papers and videos that are convincing. The sound reduction is astounding. The power graphs are impressive. The price of the boat propellers is gobsmacking… but if the efficiency claim holds true, will easily pay the upgrade, and the dolphins & whales will be ever thankful.
moistly··on The other Phillips head screwdriver
Drywall screws are Philips, not Robertson. The cam-out feature is used to prevent over-penetration, which badly weakens the drywall. These bits are used; they precisely dimple the paperboard and prevent the gypsum from being crushed.

https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Positioning-Screwdriver-Dryw...

I do have a bunch of what look like drywall screws with Robertson heads, but I am certain that they are not intended for use with drywall.

moistly··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
What are the religious values that you feel the non-religious do not share?
moistly··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
A trip to “Citizens of Walmart” (or whatever it’s called) provides a much more solid argument for dress standards. Pyjamas are pretty crass, but they don’t hold a candle to the vulgar, bizarre, and even pornographic stuff that you’ll see on that website.
moistly··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
Here are almost 13 million examples for you.

https://www.nrdc.org/resources/lead-pipes-are-widespread-and...

“Lead service lines—the pipes that carry water from the water main under the street to residences—have long been recognized as the primary contributor of lead in drinking water (we’ll call them lead pipes for simplicity’s sake). After conducting a survey of these lead pipes in the United States, NRDC estimates that there is a range of 9.7 million to 12.8 million pipes that are, or may be, lead, spread across all 50 states, including those that claim to have none.”

This affects some 22 million people.

moistly··on Ask HN: Why Is Everything Declining?
Maintaining (let alone replacing) buried infrastructure is expensive and few people are in favour of paying higher taxes. Politicians get elected by claiming that government services are full of waste, then demand a ten percent reduction in the workforce. Goodbye water quality test protocols! Things have been proven good so far, so obviously it’s not needed! Oh, hey, this other water source is cheaper, let’s use it. Phosphate balance? Can’t test that, the water quality tester was fired.

And that is how you get lead poisoning in Flint.
